Knife Making Billet Divider for Damascus Steel

When making damascus steel or folded tamahagane, billets of steel are divided, cut and folded, then rewelded to increase the layer count. The divider tool built in this video helps blade smiths make those cuts accurately, which increased the quality and yield of folded steel. This tool is simple, cheap and can be made in about an hour.

Those strips of steel can be obtained from shipping pallet banding. Find a home builder or factory and they will have all kinds of those strips of steel they are constantly disposing of, most will likely love to be asked about using some for projects.

Very helpful, tape measures can be a little wonky and creates variation in my billet. Two other things help in my experience. Cutting with a decent bandsaw and making dies for your press. A decent finish cuts clean up time dramatically, and using a bandsaw reduces waste. Thanks for the video.

Quick question from a new knife maker. When your doing canister Damascus what thickness for the canister wall do you use? Also If you were doing it by hand would you use a thinner wall canister or would you stick with the same? Thanks in advance.
