Detailed review of the Jungle King II including some chopping, slicing and batoning. All the fun stuff! Once I got back home and reviewed the footage, I discovered that the Aitor costs a little more than $20 these days. Back when it was purchased, it was about $20 + S&H, now due to short supply, these knives go for well over $100

I belonged to the Spanish special forces and I used that knife in 1990 and 1991, it was a very demanding use in the mountains and during the maneuvers, today it still works perfectly, it has a very hard metal and it has hardly suffered any wear being sharpened I have 24 knives and it is my favorite.

@@raulc9615 The Jungle King I is much better. I tried to destroy it using it as a concrete chisel with a 2kg club hammer, it doesn't budge. The blade is attached by 4 different methods - press fit, screw, epoxsy over the screw and a spring pin. The spring pin is for emergency backup, it doesn't actually do much. The JK I is the best hollow handle survival knife, in my opinion.

You know, I feel it is a balance. If you want to chop with a knife, get a real heavy one. If you want a general knife get this. If you want survival stuff also, and make use of them, this could do. But why always go hardcore? Then an axe would be fine or an Extrema Ratio Ontos.

You can't beat the Aitor knives made in Spain. I bought a mall hunting Aitor knife. For hunting small game. Like rabbits. I paid about 40 some dollars in Costa Rica back in 1991. Great spanish sólid steel 440. The polished steel blade doesn't fade away that easily.

Using trouser pockets not an option for having small stuff in? The sheath is very odd, especially so the sheath lock (locking the main blade in the sheath). I doesn't have a proper drain hole (even if it may have a hole or two). The nylon band is only set inte the sheath with one (1) screw (or bolt?). The tiny nylon line on the secondary blade (sic) easily hangs loose and its loop easily get stuck in tight bushes even if the laynard on the main blade is kept safe somehow. The signaling mirror got a hole in it, fine, but the mirror is metal and tiny so I doubt it is for any real usage in a real life situation. The Y of the slingshoot feature is VERY narrow. A simple mistake and you shoot into the metal pin. The spring in the tube feel out on the ground on day 1 for me. It was LOOSE in the tube.

Due to the nature of my job, my wife bought me a Aitor Jungle King II "made in Spain." That was back in 1981. I have used my Jungle King II in many different environments for over 34 + years. I suggest that if anyone out there wants to buy a JK II? Try Ebay and only buy the one made in Spain (if possible). The JK II made in China is not the same quality, and the sheath does not have all the perks that come with the Spain made original. I must say that I always carry a second knife or hand axe with me when I am out for a 3 to13 overnighters stroll in the wilderness.

that's a survival knive! The reason why it designed to had a hollow grip, so you could attached it at a stick, pole or whatever and voila! you had a spear now..
@ghanaboyz
@ghanaboyz 5 жыл бұрын
"they've taught to use the aitor not as a weapons, but as a tool to survive and to create a deadly 'primitive' silent weapon in guerilla warfare." HUGE contradiction right there :( Also, how many people in real life survival situations risk their blade/container by trying to make a spear with the knife in one end? If the knife takes hold where it hits, you are likely to have the medium size-big game running away with your knife stick out on its side. The saw teeth doesn't help the knife getting stuck in the animal IF you get it deep enough. You really risk your knife anyway if you put it on a spear and I doubt you will ge a decent spear anyway. I am no spear expert, but I guess knifes aren't designed as a spear tips as it's not their prime job. You hardly want a piece of the stick left in the hollow handle if you happens to get the stick stuck in it: that would be S T U P I D and thus not something to risk in a survival situation. Writing the same thing again and again doesn't make your argument stronger as you have 0 in argument as far as I know.

Aitor is awesome knives maker. In 40 years nobody know the first case of a broked blade (the hollow handle issue is just a mith). Is going to fail just with a chinese copy crap but not with a original Aitor brand. The saw work, you can see a lot of videos on youtube, but your tecnique mmmmm 🙄. This knife desing if for what it is, is not a bushcraft knife, so of course is not going to be the best for feathersticking using your thumb on the blade. Any way, nice video and really nice knife (around $160 by the way). Another thing, if your knife is from 80's is going to have more colectable value. The factorie Aitor, changed to Aitor/pielcu and this Aitor (the knife you have) is going to be better and a nice piece to colectors so far, you have a great knife in every single way. (sorry for my english). Bye!!

@ghanaboyz
@ghanaboyz 5 жыл бұрын
Making and maintaining a fire in harsh conditions may be a situation a survival knife is supposed to handle very well. Feathersticking may save you by helping ignite your fire when the conditions are very tough. I really don't see how a very small saw helps for the most fundamental needs. Is having flat surfaces of the sawn of parts a must for some reason? Not much on the knife is left for firesteel usage, a strange thing as a firesteel is included. I found the secondary knife more useful for scraping, but then again, the addition of the secondary knife really feels like a way to providing features to the kit that is not solved by the main knife. Actually, the small secondary blade seems to be all sharp edges and points, a bit odd as it sticks out where you put your fingers. I don't mind having an extra blade or a blade for different usage, but it seems odd to put it in a survival knife sheath meaning you get both eggs in the same basket. I have my spare or alternate knife in a different place than the main knife. If for some reason I loose the sheath with the knife in it, I still got the other blade. If you loose the Aitor sheath you loose both blades in one go (it has a very odd sheath lock and the fastening of the nylon belt on the sheath only uses 1 single bolt/screw).

The copies (and some originals) don't have angled teeth tops, so you need to grind it in. The Chinese Master Cutlery are tougher than Liles, the older (80-90s) Taiwanese United Cutlery have cast pot metal handles that deform or break: useless, a rotten shame, as the UC blades where cleaner ground , sharper and tougher than the rougher (cough) 2K$ originals... No way it's 20$, if it's that cheap it's fake. Aitor company has changed hands a few times but it still uses THE SAME machines and patterns to make the jungle king model, with a few changes, such as the saw pattern, the extra knife, or the content of the kit inside the handle. ISIS had a bunch of fake aitor lookalike knives poorly made in china, the real ones are almost 200$ and extremely well made just as the ones in the 80's Pd: Watched the full vid, I want to add that the saw actually works if you know how to use it (vertically and with a little side to side wiggle once the knife is buried too deep into the wood), it's not going to break because of the lack of a full tang, if you really tried to break it it would fail sooner at another spot. Also, there should be another knife inside the sheath to do detail work.

ok... i'll give my opinion on both the Knife and the review you performed: The review: nothing wrong with what you did, it is good to see someone batoning a knife that might or might not hold, in order to know if it can perform or it will break. I do appreciate your job in that aspect, moreon since it is an item you received from your grandfather. But you overfocused a LOT on bushcraft and a survival knife might be used in a bunch of other tasks. I'm not a personal fan of the saw, but those are there because you can cut dry wood but also aluminum fuselage and steel sheets. live wood it is best cutted by stretching the branch to a side and then using the knife's edge to perform some oblique cuts. The knife: i have to admit as a knife lover that i would love to have an Jungle King in my collection, sadly these are very expensive knifes for what they are in my country so it is out of the question. The knife by itself its a good knife, well balanced and pretty well constructed given the fact of being a hollow handle knife... BUT... the sheer concept of a hollow handle survival knife it is controversial and old. It might somehow work if the build quality is very good, but the gain on the objects able to be carried in a small waterproof container are too little to be considered as a reasonable tradeoff. A custom handle could fit those extra little stuffs (if they are even necesary to begin with) and the knife would retain his strenght. That's why all the "survival knifes" moved on from that 80's concept (which was really influenced by Rambo films) to a stronger blade "full tang" but less gadget aproach... in which i have to say that "batoning" it is very very very overestimated as a task for a knife... since that specific task can be performed with a rock, or a wood cradle and there are better tools for dealing with wood anyway like an axe or a saw

The knife that you have is the first AITOR JK2s that were manufactured in the early 80s, it is not like the ones that are manufactured now that are rubbish compared to these old ones. It is not a cheap knife at all, the only thing you may not like is the saw but today that model and the JK1 (manufactured in the 80s not today models) are the best hollow handle knives. I have the same model (in black) that you have shown in the video, from the same years but totally new without using it, the one I use is with the JK2 with normal edge, not the black one that I have for collection, and still working!!! it is not cheap at all, 20 dollars? What you tell me is not new, that's what they say, they have to sell, they have no choice but to say that they are manufactured in the same place, same machinery, same workers (this last one makes me laugh). Of course the ones made now are of good quality, they cut and prick you in the perfect way, they are robust, but what we collectors of these knives are referring to is that the ones made now are not made with the same "love" and Be careful than the ones from before, you just have to compare any AITOR from the 80s with one from now. I repeat, it cuts and pricks you in the same way yes, but that touch that those from the 80s and 90s had, they no longer have it, for this fucking reason those from that time are as sought after as the one shown in the video.

dude, what i can see is that you try to make it look as crap when it's not. don't know where you got an original AITOR knife for 20 dollars, for a start. the saw is not meant to cut wood but to make notches, anyhow for the saw length you could better brake the branch and it would be far much easier. i can bet that knife is the best of hollow handles and with some practice you can make a decent feather stick, as a matter of facts I did it. this blade is a well designed well made piece of cutlery and believe me when I say that the Spanish have been fighting wars for thousands of years, they know something about blades...ask the british.

Yeah totally I could not agree more. I really do need a follow up on this video since I know so much more about the knife than I did when I filmed it. Great blade, with a solid grind, not sure what the metal comp is but whatever it maybe it holds a great edge.

@@TheSurvivalOutpost can't remember now but It is stainless and has a great sharp retention. I've been reading and found out that the foreign legion used this knife and all of the Spanish armed forces, including the Special Operations Unit of the Spanish Marines. Also if you see the logo on the sheath It is a symbol of the 3 armies, as they call it.

Not the same what u have is an Aitor jungle-king 2 what u see in a magazine of BUDK those r the knock off's u can tell if u have a real a real Aitor have a spring in the handle plus if u remove the spring u should be able to see a clear type of hard glue or plastic that holds the blade in place and makes it water proof also at the front of the blade there usually a small pin mark older models my not have then those knives r given out to certain armies that's how u know if it's the real deal it seems that ur father new what he was doing !

Inspired by Rambo movies... 😂😂 It's more likely that Rambo kinfe got inspiration from this knife... Aitor is old and reputable company.. Aitor Jungle King is military issued for Spanish special forces..

20 dollars? cheap knife? impossible! It must be a fake or something (originals are between 100-200 euros).

That's the price I recall my grandfather paying but that was many years ago and he got it used. I will be honest and say I did not know enough about the knife as I should have when I made this video. I need to do another video and give it a better review.

that's a survival knive! The reason why it designed to had a hollow grip, so you could attached it at a stick, pole or whatever and voila! you had a spear now..

Here where i live, Indonesia. the aitor is one of standard knives used by the military. They've taught to use the aitor not as a weapons, but as a tool to survive and to create a deadly 'primitive' silent weapon in guerilla warfare. the thick rainforest might be your enemy either your 'friend'.
