I am not sure how accurate this is about the use of ball bearings in the pivot. This is what Chat GPT says: The first knife to use ball bearings in its opening mechanism is generally attributed to the Benchmade 710 model, originally released in 1999. The 710 features a patented Axis lock and ball-bearing pivot system, allowing for smooth and easy one-handed opening and closing of the blade. Since then, many knife manufacturers have incorporated ball bearings into their folding knife designs for improved performance and ease of use.

Agree. Generally not a fan of serrations, however, I have found that Spyderco do them really well. I own 2 x Spyderco Rescue knives (for my cars) and 2 x part-serrated Enduras. The serrations are sharp, generally don't get bound up (unless they're dull) and are reasonably easy to maintain (albeit it does take a little time with a sharpening rod - just watch some Knife Centre vids while you work). I'm sure that there must be different types with pros & cons. Have a great day.

I had a very small SOG multi tool with a blade, screw driver tips and a nice pair of small scissors that was constantly used in my tacklebox. Had its own compartment and it got knocked overboard. I remember those old Cold Steel commercials where a Tanto was stabbed through a car door. I think it was Cold Steel, my brother thought it was silly said you could do that with a railroad spike.

One of the most important (emergency) tools in my car is a ResQme. I'm carrying one, attached to my car keys, for over 15 years. I'm thankful I've never been in a situation where I needed to use them, but I know they work. Years ago I was in the opportunity to test them at a few car windows and seat belts, just amazing (if used properly). As for a multitool I have a Gerber Centerdrive with extra bits and sockets in a small emergency / toolkit in my car.

I carry a Mora Companion in my boot along with a set of wrenches, a craftsman small socket wrench and set, and knipex cobras. IMO, a multi-tool is not ideal for a car. You want specific tools that can help you out of the situation, that will last and be functional when you really need it. Also in my car: 2 liters of water, always, jumper cables, shovel, floor pump, wool blankets, headlamp, leather gloves, and a deck of cards.

One tool not mentioned in Dave talking about the Leatherman Wingman is the "Package opener" It is something that is sharp enough out of the box to slice a seatbelt I believe if needed. It's close to being a gut hook and would be a safer option than a blade if needed.

There is a guy, Contraption Collection on KZfaq, who has designed, and made a few, bali-scissors! Locks closed, push a button and it unlocks the handles but keeps the blades locked closed for safe slipping. Push the button again while they are fully opened and it unlocks the scissors, which have a spring to remain open. Would love to see somebody in the knife world hook up with dude to get these into production so I can buy one. 🙂

Many years ago when I was on tanks in the 90s and 00s, we pretty much settled in on the basic Leatherman as the premier tanker's tool. At the time in the 90s there was only Leatherman and Gerber but the Gerbers had (have?) a problem with their pliers - they would break far more easily than the Leatherman. I don't know if it was the heat treat itself or the metal they used, but that sh1t would break long before the Leatherman pliers would. Eventually everyone in the entire platoon had a Leatherman on their belt even the Platoon Leader, a Second Lieutenant. Fast forward to the 00s and the wars get cranked up to the 11s and pretty much *everyone* in the entire 1st Armored Division has a Leatherman on their hip. I have literally brought an M1A1 Heavy tank back from the dead with a Leatherman, at least enough to get the turbine fired up so we could move the tank itself. Tankers everywhere hated it when Leatherman discontinued the original, luckily they saw the error of their ways and brought it back although in a slightly modified form. I keep a Leatherman in my IT toolbag, in my vehicle, and in all my various my go-bags scattered around the country.

Wanted to comment at 1:45 before I finish the vid. I carry a Leatherman Wave and keep the Leatherman Supertool in the truck. I also carry the Supertool care on my hip next to the wave but use it to store my spare mag for my CZ P10, an unobtrusive mag carrier option while appendix carrying. While in the service I carried a first generation generation Leatherman {later Supertool} and a first gen Gerber multitool. I found having two helped for holding a bolt and twisting a nut while working in the field and quick vehicle maintenance, & the option of flat or needle nose plyers.. Enjoy the vids and keep'em a rollin. Now to watch the rest of the video. Cheers...

The Victorinox Handyman has been THE vehicle based multi of choice since 1986 that provides best quality at a low price that can do it all and has no legal issues as being a weapon within reach of children and those who dislike weapons. With SOG you can reverse the handles so the pliers are between the handles to grip larger objects. A SOG only feature people that don't use them often don't know. Nowadays I would recommend the Gerber BLADELESS mp600 for timelessness and it is a travel ready tool that can happily leave the vehicle no matter where you holiday or as a general multitool EDC for loved ones that they can take to work/college/overseas for life.

Great show as always. Question: what would be your recommendation for a "survival knife" for hikers / campers with the following criteria: 1. Under 100$ (I'm from India and that's almost the high end of affordability for a casual hiker) 2. Full tang, and if possible, US made 3. Stainless steel since it's quite humid in most jungles and mountains here I usually recommend Moras since they're quite affordable, but some bigger / chunkier options would be nice.

DCA, I work as a journalist. I carry a Leatherman Signal every day from my start as an outdoors writer, but it has started to feel a bit out of place as I’ve moved into more formal assignments covering local business and politics. I still like carrying a multi-tool, but I’m looking for one that is a little fancier looking and less scary. It still should be pocket knife sized and able to take a beating though. I’m looking for it to be pliers based (for non threatening fidgets) and have a pocket clip. Tools that I want are: screwdrivers for camera gear, wirecutters that can get through fence wire in a pinch, a saw, scissors, a locking knife and a file. Oh, and an easy access bottle opener. I know the obvious choice is something like a Leatherman Wave, but I was wondering if there’s anything else you would suggest. Thanks for all you do. Also, is it just me, or is the Free series super bulky?

I’ve kinda fallen back in love with my Leatherman Free P2. It takes some practice to get the hang of but they thoughtfully designed the one-hand-operation and once you’re fluid with it man it makes such a difference to be able to grab a hold of whatever you need to take a tool to, and draw your multi tool and get it ready to put to use without having to put the work down. I hope Leatherman will develop that line further.

Victorinox I guess, every child should start with that. When you learn how to use safely a slip joint, it’s easier to use anything else. It’s like learning how to drive manual instead of automatic. It’s easier to go into automatic it you want, but if you learn with automatic, you will have lots of troubles going back into manual (from experience with my wife).

You can actually get a Rebar with a pair of scissors but in exchange of the main blade (blade-less/knife-less Rebar) which I find more practical since most, if not all of us carry a dedicated pocket knife. And yes David, that's a T-Shank on that Gerber, useful stuff.

Best multi-tool I have found for dealing with mechanical devices is the Leatherman Crunch. Vise Grips are multi-tools in their own right and these ones, though small and lacking in leverage, are tough as hell. I've abused the same pair many times for almost 10 years and they are still in great shape. You don't need to worry about having the right sized wrench as these will inelegantly but effectively turn most bolts 1 inch and under, and allow you to remove bolts that are rounded off. They can be used as a clamp. They can function as a handle for saw blades or broken tools. They give you compound leverage and can be used as a pipe wrench. The fully serrated blade, though short, is nicely hollow ground and is perfect for cutting rubber hose. The file is good quality and three sided. The phillips driver is excellent. The flat heads are decent. The wire stripper is surprisingly good. And while the bit driver is cumbersome to operate, it is still nice to have in a pinch. Paired with the Leatherman bit extender and bit kit, this very small package can handle most roadside problems that can conceivably be handled at the roadside. That Victorinox is so effing cool and I think I need a sword cane and a carcass splitter too🤣

Hey DCA, got a possible humdinger for ya. My left-handed wife has been carrying a small CJRB Feldspar for about a year now and really likes it, however I don't think the D2 has been tough enough for her as it has a couple chips in the blade now as she uses it for work daily and keeps finding coins in it. I want to find her something that has a closed back, is ambidextrous, tough, and affordable, and made for smaller hands. I really dig this series, thank you!

SOG Powerlock! That was my immediate thought for the first question too - glad to see it was covered. It's not my favorite multitool, but I think it's perfect for a vehicle. Doesn't matter that it's heavy if it rides in a glove box and the slower access to the inside-mounted tools doesn't matter so much if it doesn't see regular use. Plus, it's cheap for the tool loadout and capability, you can use it with sockets - hey, you forgot to mention the crimper on the inside part of the handles or that SOG will sell you alternate tools or replacement parts if you want to customize!

The first video you made that I watched was your budget blades from a year or two ago. That remains my favorite of yours that I have seen. I bought several of those as my income stream (disability) dropped dramatically. These last two have been my next favorites! Very interesting and I’ve enjoyed them very much. Keep making these videos and while I might not be buying ZT, Brous or Benchmade for now, I will keep buying from my main pushers of knives…. Oh, and I do have one question - why have most knives seem to have shrunk? I love some smaller knives but I have the first Tiger Shark, Magnum Tanto and a few customs all larger 7 “ - 9” in fixed and most pocet knives seem to be in the 2.5” - 3.5” is it a legal issue? Have and carry the Swordfish, and some larger Cold Steel (and the CRKT Fossil) but size does matter and when needed…

Hey DCA, recently got into making models and like to cut the pieces(plastic, or very thin tin) close as possible to the template. I find "office" scissors aren't great for most fine work, a utility razor is too bulky and the small model razor(scalpel) is uncomfortable over time. Could you recommend a scissors(snips) and fine edge combo to make things a little easier and comfortable? Budget, about $150 for the set but I'd spend a bit more for great quality for more cutting time. Thanks for helping me into a new hobby after introducing me to the hobby of knives.

Question: I recently had a house fire, and a Gransfors Bruk wildlife hatchet I owned miraculously survived. I would love to replace the handle and continue using it but I am worried that the fire may have ruined the temper of the steel. I don't know much about tempering or how much heat it would take to "ruin" a temper. Do you think I should invest in repairing a potentially brittle hatchet, or buy a new one out right? If you think I should retire the Gransfors, is there a medium sized hatchet with a wooden handle that you are particularly fond of? Thanks

Loved the CRKT CEO video and it got me thinking. My mother suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis. She finds he self needing a knife more and more. What can you recommend that relatively small and easy to open and close?

The 1st time I heard of pivot bearings in a knife, was one made by Bob Terziola out of New Mexico. I badly wanted it, but i believe it was around $300, far outside my financial range at the time & kind of stretching it now. Memory fails me, so I can't recall the model name.

Love these videos. I have two questions for you. What's the best way to clean and lubricate knives? Do i need different cleaners/oils for different steels or designs? And secondly, What are the best heavy duty machete and brush clearing tools? When is a machete better or worse than a small hatchet?

the best? are Bravo machete (cpm1v) from Bark River Knives but they are expensive and difficult to bought, (need wait for drop)

Re. machete -v- hatchet. If I'm only processing wood (eg. fire wood at a static camp site) I carry a hatchet or small axe. The head of the hacket/axe is specifically designed to chop & split wood. If however, I think I might need to also cut away some brushes or vines or other stuff (maybe to clear a path while hiking) I grab a machete. You have the long thin edge and better balance to get in, swing and cut loose stuff away. Have a great day.

Hey DCA, I was wonder if it'd be possible to revisit pocket fixed blades? I'm looking for a small, sub 3", inconspicuous blade for work. Thanks for all the knowledge!

I love these episodes, I learn something new every Week. Could you explain detent in laymans perspective?
@realbroggo
@realbroggo Жыл бұрын
The 'detent' is what holds most folding blades closed. There are variations but generally (simple version) a detent ball is mounted on the liner lock bar or frame lock bar. When the blade is closed this ball sits inside a small hole (ie. the 'detent') on the blade near the pivot assisted by some pressure from the liner/frame. To open the blade you must use enough force to push the liner or frame out of the way and get detent ball out of the detent (ie. 'break' the detent). When the blade closes the ball relocates into the hole. Too much pressure on the detent ball or if the detent ball cannot roll within its socket and the detent will be strong/tight making it hard to open because there is too much friction. Too little pressure and the detent will be weak/light which could also make it hard to open as you won't be able to get enough pressure for a snappy 'break' and the blade will just flop open and probably won't lock open. Disassemble a folder and you should be able to locate the detent ball and the detent - the detent ball will often leave a mark or groove (ie. a 'track') on the blade near the pivot which can help locate it. Hope this helps. I'm sure DCA would be able to provide more details and some visuals!! Have a great day.

Im new to the modern pocketknife world, but so far I own 2 budget thumbstud knives, QSP parrot and cmb predator. They both pocket deploy easily and consistently with a more horizontal pull. Does everyone do this with their thumbstud knives?

Hi David, I work in a big box hardware store specifically in the lumber/ outside sections. I deal with concrete, soil, rock, lumber, insulation ect all day alongside my employees. Currently I keep a Leatherman Rev on me, but have stopped carrying a dedicated pocket knife because of having to constantly tear down and clean them. Are there any folding knives under $100 that are relatively corrosion resistant and easy to tear down to clean? Thank you in advance

Hello. The general consensus at work is that the blade on a multi tool does not count as a carried blade. I would like your opinion on this issue. Most of us carry a multi tool and at least 1 blade. If it counts, then I carry 4 blades. Thanks.

Hey DCA, I have been a knife & pocket tool enthusiast for a decade now and was just curious to get your opinion on which folding knife to get wifey as a gift, that is really quality made & will last her for many years, as well it can be passed down to our daughter as a sentimental piece years down the line? Budget is not really a problem, however a knife that is worth the price that is charged, that one would not feel guilty of paying and actually using it every day? Thanks in advance ! Side note for needing a glass breaker on a multitool in your car; it's actually not necessary. The head rests in your car are removable, and the prongs themselves are designed to work as glass breakers. You're welcome.
