Finally a video where I didn’t need to skip through a plethora of folding knives. I have a drawer full of folders in my knife chest all too expensive and non do the job better than a similar sized fixed blade. FIXED BLADES RULE! 😁

I hear you but just so someone says it - a lot of Cold Steel folders would fit the bill really well. I'm thinking the Ultimate Hunter or Code 4 (although any of the triad lock ones really.) For fixed blades the Pendleton Hunter (AUS10), SRK, Master Hunter, etc.

@@DL-ij7tffolders dont work for me. They get so gunked up and nasty and yeah i have to take them apart to clean them but its just so much easier for me to use a fixed blade that i kinda depise folders. I do carry two to edc at work tho lol

Thanks for answering my question. Figured you’d be up for a fixed blade question. I think I’ll be going with the Ontario. I like the idea of it also having a burly chisel tip with a fairly acute radius between the chisel tip & main edge.

What constitutes a "hunting" knife? I keep hearing about knives with "plenty of belly" for skinning but I remember a deer processing video put out some years ago by the Wisconsin DNR and the person processing the deer was a professional butcher. He skinned and processed the entire deer using a straight boning knife which literally has no belly for skinning. Light touches with the tip of the knife and lots of pulling and the hide was easily removed. Nowadays, it's pretty rare for anyone to skin their deer in the field. Most hunters will field dress their deer and be done with it. That requires a sharp, pointy knife to cut around the bowel and then some skill in gutting. My preferred tool for that is a curved serrated blade found on some SAKs or a drop point, clip point, or Nessmuk-style humped blade. Or use two fingers to lift the hide as you slice, so you don't cut the gut. Then, typically off it goes to the butcher (I butcher my own deer though) or if it's a guided hunt, often the guide will do the processing back at the camp. For small game like squirrels or rabbits, a slice or two here and there with a pocket knife and then the skinning is done by yanking the hide off by hand.

The one you carry with you after you have experience, haha. I agree with you though. Can do just about everything with a 4-6” boning knife and/or havalon. I’ve never been around or seen anyone using the giant Rambo-style blades.

I use a Spyderco Delica 4 for everything. It has field dressed deer and tons of small game , cut open every Amazon box delivered, and sliced a lot of grilled steak. I always have it on me so it will probably work well surviving in a suburban apocalypse too.

@@blueberry766 Budget minded - I agree. Overall quality is somewhat lacking though and the sheaths kind of suck (sorry). I'd go Mora over old hickory if pressed, but I'm a certified Mora fanboy at this point.

@samueljlarson Yeah I agree aswell, I just like the old hickory more because you can modify it and make your own sheath aswell, and it's a full tang aswell and larger But the mora is really nice because you can just use it as intended and when it fails you just buy another

I like the Mora Basics but I've become a big fan of the Hultifors GK. Cheap and solid so you don't have to worry too much about abusing them.

Hi KC crew, while there’s no such thing as a true “one & done” or “unicorn” folding knife, there are some that check more boxes than others. Two knives that are often overlooked that I would love for you to compare and discuss are the Spyderco Sage 5 and Benchmade Mini Presidio II

Benchmade Arvensis and Bushcrafter are my pack staples. I keep a SOCP and an old Nimravus in my get-home bag. I have OKC stuff too, but the Benchmade’s are my workhorse staples and Benchmade is local to me so I supported them pretty heavily. As they change their business model and supply/manufacturing, I may be supporting them less or leaving them completely, but for now I still do. The designer I like the most is Shane Sibert as his designs are insanely ergonomic and robust. His name is on most of my favorite Benchmade offerings, past and present.

A good way to check if a spine is sharp enough to strike a ferro rod is to see if it will shave your fingernail in the same way, just scrape the spine down the top of your nail and if it produces shavings then more than likely it will strike a ferro rod as well.

@adrianjagmag well no but...sparking a rod in a store is usually frowned upon lol or you might not have a rod with you when you're looking at a knife, it actually works great try it lol.

8-10 mm thick knife which I have used to butcher a deer, and worked fairly well is my Boker Plus BOB.

I would trust the Cold Steel Drop Forged Hunter as my survival knife. I now own 4 Drop Forged series knives, the 52100 steel is one of my favourite steels of all time. If you wanna see how durable it is (and you have the belly for it…) watch Joe X’s destruction video of it. Spoiler: it took a glock shot to break it.

I have the Condor Hudson's Bay knife. It's an excellent knife for the price, but there are some things that I didn't like. The back of the bolster is sharp on the corners, and will tear your index finger up if you're not careful. A dremel took care of that. The edge grind was badly uneven, which was easy enough to fix, and I don't like the sheath. I'm having a mountain man style sheath made for it. Other than that, it's a good buy.

Hi DCA & Thomas. Sorry to disappoint you gentlemen but our heirloom from great grandparents cost $25 and hasn't let us down yet. It's full tang 1095 with a wooden handle. Don't really know what kind of wood but we can see the wear & tear on it from years of usages. Are you sure T-Rex only have two claws.?? You might be right saying Joe Flowers probably be riding it....! Even we in Australia knows he's crazy but we love him that way. The man is a true legend. Cheers, be strong & prosperous.

Still hunting for the best survival knife myself. My closest is the tops longhorn bowie and the tops tahoma. Ideally you want a 7-8 inch blade with a long handle for chopping if needed. Weight approx 1 lb, maybe a bit more or a bit less. The long blade allows spanning wood for batoning. For me as well part of it is animal defense and you need some reach to get at vital organs of wild animals. Ideally it is carried drop leg with a dangler and secured around your leg. This allows it to carry easily and you have quick access.

I am surprised you did not include a K Bar BK 2 in your selection. Heavy yes, but very versatile. I used to train for SAR work and choose a BK 2 because it cannot be broken, can be used as a pry bar, chopper, metal piercing ( small aircraft skin), batoning, some field woodcraft, or as a cook knife. Fits more into the survival knife category than hunting. I wish it had a textured handle though for a better grasp with leather gloves. Sheath is good for multiple attachment methods. Not doing SAR work now so is part of a 3 day+ get home bag.

The best wood-splitting question is a great one this time of year. I use a BK-2 beat to piss. And it just keeps truckin’. But I’ve been wondering if there is a better choice for this exact task.

Bark River Bravo 1 LT with CPM.3V blade steel and micarta handle is the knife for the fella who wants a hunting/survival knife, best blade shape, profile and blade steel for this purpose, and best and most comfortable coke bottle handle shape out there.

I'm surprised you didnt go with a Buck 119 for a hunting/survival knife, maybe in an upgraded steel that they offer now. Spend a few extra bucks and grab yourself a speedy sharp for fire steel striking and it doubles as an emergency knife sharpener

Hey DCA and Thomas, I recently got a non-stainless fixed blade knife but it didn't come with a sheath, so l'd apprechiate your recommendation on one. The knife blade is 7 inches long, and 2 inches wide (edge to spine), and a little over 12 inches overall. My preferences are the sheath should be able to withstand the elements (Kydex?), not retain water, and be able to attach a dangler so I can carry it easily without the handle poking into my abdomen. Bonus if the price is under $100. Thanks for being such an important part of the knife community!

10mm thick blafe, no, i dont know, but it still immediately brought to mind integral and skeletinized one piece, all metal knives. Boker makes and sells them.commercially. theres a handful of custom makers who specialize in them like Todd Begg.

For wood processing would go for a full tang hatchet, there are plenty on the market, SOL camp, Silky NATA, tops Grandpa... would like to see a discussion on full tang mini hatchets and what is available

My EDC is a Buck 113. Can gut, skin, process, battan, ect. Full tang small for every day carry. It's never let me down. Stays sharp. Squared off spine.

Hey KC crew, the Spyderco Shaman and Strider SNG are two of my most carried folders and I would like to find a fixed blade that would complement/mirror them to carry. Had high hopes when I purchased the Enuff2 in K390(great knife!) but the handle is just slightly too short and thin for my mitts. Help me find a fixed blade that more or less matches the size, form factor, and blade to handle ratio of the Shaman/SNG…Thanks!

Some cross-over hunting/survival would be Cold Steel Master Hunter or the ESEE 3 or 4. Even the Becker 16 is a good choice. My personal choice is the Mora Garberg. It does it all.

Probably the best hybrid hunting/survival/camp knife is the old Puma White Hunter. Full tang, versatile blade shape with a "Scandi" profile false edge on a section of spine (that can be sharpened to a true edge), and a flat spot on the spine for hammering.

Cold Steel Trail Master comes close to 8mm at 7.9mm (0.31in). And I think there are a few more in that thickness range. WTG?

Every Esee from the 3, or maybe even the Izula, to at least the 6, is suitable. You might have to touch up a spot for the ferro rod. (Tops seem to be a bit more fragile than Esees). At a higher price point, Bark River has a lot of options.

Enjoyed your video. Just my personal preference I always carry 3 knives. Its practical for me and has become my always habit. If pinned down to just 1 knife I would go with a 4 to six inch bowie. Gotta go with a classic. Again good video, see ya on the trail.

Hey DCA and Thomas, I have a question I just got my first slipjoint a Victorinox tinker deluxe and the main blade doesn't have a half stop but the flat head does. Is there a Victorinox or good slip joint with a half stop and mirror finish? I am honestly impressed with a mirror polish on a knife, I have done it and it wasn't easy. Budget friendly ideally (below 75) but something higher end would be nice to see. Also is there a Victorinox without a mirror polish?

Hey, there DCA and crew! I do a lot of big food prep when I camp (whole birds, etc) and am used to using large, 8-10" chef's knives at home. I want a camp knife that can handle all of the usual camp tasks but which can also spatchcock a chicken or dice an onion without trouble. I'm a big fella with big hands so big knives (6-10 inches) are ideal. It can't have a finger guard as that just gets in the way for camp cooking tasks. And (here's the twist) I'm left-handed so right handed sheaths are no bueno. Looking for my sub-$200 unicorn. Thanks!

The TOPS Operator 7 is 3/8+/- inches in thickness and could be used for hunting. Or splitting a carcass. Or chopping down trees. Or splitting fallen trees for firewood. Or for prying open doors/windows. Or for demo-ing the rest of the house. Or for attaching to your belt to keep the waistband of your pants from riding up. Or for.....

I use my Can Opener on a SaK for a Striker since most dehydrated meals are bagged or cans have opening methods of their own i abuse the can opener..

We need to find an additional name for a knife category. How many owners/users ever get in a survival situation? Hunting, camping, woodcrafting, and being prepared with a sturdy survival knife in a bugout or getback pack make sense, but one category is missing for an "allround/outdoors" knife. Lionsteel and Joker knives also have nice knives that would answer this request, at very different price points. BTW: Mora Robust and Companion Heavy Duty both have a 3.2mm blade, the Companion 2.1mm, all without a 90 degree spine which can be added by pulling it across sandpaper.

My preferred crossover Hunting/Survival knife is my Spyderco Bushcraft UK. It's O-1 tool steel and a sharp spine with a leather sheath. Too bad it's a discontinued design!

Have you a video on tanto button flipper + thumb opener based on blade strength ( stress it takes for a blade to break) compared to overall outdoor utility from spliting wood to food preping compared to prices instead of high prices show case collector knives? I'm waiting on my first knife it is button lock, flipper + thumb opener, it's for slicing light yard work & learning. Looking for a heavier work tanto bc I like the versatility of tanto blade as a second practicol folding knife 3 - 3.5" blade about 4 inch handle.

Dear DCA, cold steel trailmaster would be a great choice survival knife with thick spine..fyi. And contrary to your (professional) opinion, it is a SUPERIOR survival knife. I carry one usually daily! Second choice.. A handmade kukri from Nepal. Also a superior survival knife...and can be gotten relatively cheaply.

Hey DCA! i heard that you said in this video that you like sharpening your knives primarily with a strop these days which peaked my interest to watch the sharpening video that you linked. While watching i saw that you included the use of sandpaper for reprofiling an edge if necessary, in the event of any edge damage. I want to get into learning how to sharpen and was wondering, is there any difference between your method of using sand paper and using diamond stones with a guided system like the worksharp pro precsion adjust? Like for example the ability to sharpen harder steel or the speed/efficency of the diamond stones vs sand paper? Sorry for the loaded question lol Thanks in advance for any advice!

Diamonds will certainly cut faster, but the biggest difference is the resulting geometry between the two methods. Diamond stones will keep a flat edge, while the paper on top of the leather strop will result in a slight convex geometry. -DCA

I don’t have much to say because with so many choices how can you choose,there are suggestions but we’re All different.. I have over 50 knives and what now,can’t use them all but in my pocket is simple SAK, I can’t carry OKC SP-10…I settled on simple Mora Companion MG Carbon,it does everything except batoning for that purpose I have hatchet…

Question for a video I’m a firefighter and regularly wear a fixed blade on my belt but when I suit up to respond to a fire I put on a pullover fireproof pants and suspender rig extremely quickly and I find that I cannot get to my knife easily but because I have to suit up and get into a vehicle literally seconds after I get a alert I never have time to take off my belt or unhook the sheath from my regular pants to attach to my rigging do you have any recommendations for a fixed blade edc knife that can be removed from a belt and put on another on very quickly? Love the videos btw

You probably want something with a clip plate to go on and off belts without removing the belt (like most of the ESEE fixed blades have) or a velcro loop (like the spartan harsey fighter) Something like an ESEE 4 with a belt clip plate is a good all-around option

A few of the Moras have belt clips, and most have button holes for buttons on your shirt or pants. Most are super cheap if you need to replace them readily.

I got the Ontario knife co set fron the smallest 7" to the 14 inch bucher blade had them professionally reground for 25$ cad each the best knives iv ever used and would trust with my life in the bush

I've got the Tops B.O.B, and it Is a good knife, but the back for the fire striker sucks. You'll have to sharpen it. And if you're talking ka-bar look at the Leathneck sf from coldsteel. The tang is like 3/4 wide with a rubber handle. Which these guys do sell.

Hey DCA! Been an avid Spyderco collector this past year.. definitely thinking about getting my first fix blade.. thinking about the Joker Campero since it comes with a fire steel.. how’s the spine on it though? Would it be able to strike with no mods needed? Thanks!

Hi DCA and Thomas, could you explain what milled liners are for those who don’t know and what brands are brands are milling liners these days? Milled liners are a show of quality and attention to detail so it is good to know when a knife has it, especially since it’s not always mentioned in the product descriptions.

Watch on KZfaq all the time " great job guys!" Need an experts advice. Been a collector for an awful long time and I'm always looking for the next best thing. Here's my dilemma. I find myself breaking down a lot of cardboard boxes and find my EDCs enjoyably put to work. A utility knife with the blade fully extended works great BUT thats not nearly cool enough. Any ideas as far as blade shape and steel? Pride in ownership counts. Easy one hand opening a must. Looking forword to hear you think Thanks Bill

My heritage survival knife (which is always carried scout-style on my belt below right kidney) is my Spyderco Enuff 2 in K390. The leaf-shaped blade is hard enough to cut a line of bull from a political speech, but tough enough to process firewood from here to the middle of the next Century. It's expensive, but piece of mind is worth a few extra dollars. While I do have a Kershaw Camp 10 in my Jeep, I wouldn't select a Camp 5 as a survival knife. D2 just doesn't have the toughness without an absolute professional heat-treating is in a VERY specific way. It's a shame, because I really love the design of the Camp 5. If they made it out of my favorite stainless steel, AEB-L, or my 2nd choice, 14C28N, I'd buy 4 or 5 to put in various go-bags and vehicles.

I always enjoy watching your videos. You nailed it on the Mora I absolutely hate their knives but ya gotta respect them. It's like the Bugout I have one and put titanium scales on it and still hate that knife. 2 really popular knives and I can't stand them. I'm weird I guess but I do love your show so I got that going for me I guess.

Hey DCA. I'm newer to collecting knives ( this channel inspired me). My question is why do a lot of "outdoor knives" use carbon steel instead of something more stainless. If you're in the elements, I feel like a stainless steel would be an asset.

David, I love your knowledge and reviews. Was so looking forward to your pocket tango especially with your nessmuk style. Check out the watchman WF 220. 14C28N. Same basic demeanntions as your pocket tango ànd beat yours to the market by about a month. Copying is a form of flattery and this is definitely a copy of your design. Great design I love it.
