This is going to be my final discussion on the Rough Ryder Kamp King (unless it comes out again) It would appear the Cap Lifter may or may not work and this has as much to do with the knife design as it does the bottle you are open.

I tried mine after you posted your previous video about the problem and found that I could get mine to work on the bottles I did find difficult to open by simply turning the blade slightly to the side, then once you’ve pried it out slightly, you can return to the regular orientation to finish the job. Then again so many bottles are twist offs these days it almost doesn’t matter anymore.

I reprofiled my cap lifter with a dremel after you put up the other video, and it works fine now. Honestly I've never been disappointed with a knife just because the cap lifter didn't work. I can get a bottle open without a cap lifter. They should have tested all tools on the prototype, before making thousands of them. Maybe Chinese beer doesn't have much of a lip & it worked for them? Anyway for myself the cap lifter was never an issue. I think the new Kamp King is excellent.

Agreed, The cap lifter is the least used tool on my knives. I've tried them on some of the funkier knives just because but back in my high school and college days several of us experimented on numerous ways to open a beer bottle with a cap lifter, including car doors, the edge of tables and the old open a bottle with another bottle as well as number belt buckles! I was pissed to find out it didn't work but definitely not a deal breaker, at least not for me!

No worries mate, I have an old "Coca Cola" bottle opener mounted in the back of my truck for tailgating parties, barn raisings, picnics, car camping, and other social gatherings. Works great though I haven't used it for quite a spell. As for the Kamp King, it was worth every penny and more so after the fix.

Imagine the backlash if this were a Case knife rather than a RR. Interesting!

Imagine the defense from some of the people in GEC community! I can hear it now "There's nothing wrong with the knife, you just don't know how to open a bottle!" Okay. That's a low blow. There would also be a lot of miffed people in the GEC community.

Good honest video. Me, there's a cap lifter on each of my SAKS and each of my Leathermans. And I don't drink beer, so this was a non-issue for me. But I still appreciate your hard work.

I just got one of these from the secondary market. As per the bottle-opener saga would have it, I looked at the tang stamps on all of the blades, and lo and behold, the stamp on three of the blades says "Rough Ryder" and the one on the bottle-opener/screwdriver blade says "Rough Rider". Both with the usual mirror imaged "RR"s. Not sure what that means, other than they may have still had some in the bin for those from the earlier spelling somewhere along the line. I drink Mexican Coca-Cola sometimes in the 500ml glass bottles. These do NOT have a twist off top like the domestic ones do, so I intend to test it that way. Haven't yet tried it.

I received one of these as a Christmas gift. Very lovely at first glance. Beautiful scales, nicely fitted to frame and bolsters - no gaps. Backsprings tight with no *excessive* gaps. Everything mirror polished. Main blade shaving sharp. . Downside? Awl was horrible...too flimsy and a big divot where, I suspect, the person grinding it slipped and took out a chunk of metal. Screwdriver blade has a rough underside where it was unly superficially polished and had a rough edge showing how it had been stamped out. Caplifter useless...much to round to get any grip on the cap's underside. I was able to file and emory a sharp lip onto it. Have not tried can opener yet...doesn't have an edge per se, but might work. If I had to rate it? Mm, 10 being perfect...maybe 5.5-6 .

Well done Tobias you want a caplifter to work on all bottles and not limit yourself to the ones that only work with the unadulterated kamp-king ! 😊

Seems like a really solid knife. It sure is big but that isn't an issue with me. I have an occasionally carry the Victorinox with every tool under the sun. Thanks for the cap lifter fix and reposting the video. Hppe you and your family all had a great Thanksgiving Day. Look forward to more. Any chance you will do a video on some of those larger knives??

That'll work but one should not be required to look for a work around for an ill formed cap lifter. RR needs to fix it!

Those older knives used much thinner blade stock than most modern knives. It probably explains why they cut like the devil, especially with the high carbon tool steel.

So many cap lifters. My new lady leg will not lift a cap, as mentioned before what else is it good for? I do not want a collection so Sunday I bought a six pack and started taking measurements. 3 beers later I was certain that I can add more arch to her foot with my grinder and succeed. If not I will try again. In the meantime if you are aiming for a superior cap lifter, I bought 2 RR1464's. The Select Barrel. One for a gift but couldn't resist one for me .Keep popping the tops my friend.

I've tried a few of my leg knives as well (and I only have a few as I'm not crazy about the pattern. They are all Rough Riders and not a single one was successful in opening a bottle. They just slip right off. It's a pity. If they actually would open a bottle, then that would be one more thing in their favor.
