Is it the proper way to heat treat D2? I thought you need to bake it in about 800 C for 15-20 min, packaged in metal sheet to exlude oxigen and quench it in air (best between aluminium plates to avoid warping).

Turned out hardened...This is only way I can do it for now. Also saw some other guys doing it this way.

D2 steel is an air hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel, It's easy to work and looks nice, but because it's air-hardened steel you can't differentially temper the blade like other High Carbon Steels. Heat treatment should be free of oxygen from the environment ( should be prevented by oxidation). It should be heat in the heat foil ( stailness steel foil). Preheat slowly to 1350° and hold at this temperature until material is uniformly heated. After thorough preheating, heat to 1800° Hold the work piece at the hardening temperature until it is completely and uniformly heated. D2 is an air hardening steel and will develop hardness on cooling in still air. As you said between two aluminium plates to avoid warping
