McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C Hornet flown by Captain Arto Ukskoski, from Fighter Squadron 11 of the Finnish Air Force at RIAT Fairford 2019. Captain Arto Ukskoski is Winner of the Sir Douglas Bader Trophy for best individual flying demonstration and the As The Crow Flies Trophy for best display as judged by the members of Friends of RIAT.

Hi... A Finn here, one thing about the "Finnish hornet" is that it is finnish.. we build those with the licence.... you do that with US navy legacyhornet... your in the drink.

As a U.S. Naval Aviator, I can tell you that is some of the best on the edge flying in a C model I've ever seen. Captain Ukskoski was trained well and is a master of his craft.

been to many air shows and even the top blue angles could not fly like this. most russians fly like this. this is why we should be scared of what these guys can do. good thing we blow a lot of smoke up peoples ass and say were powerful!!!

The aerial maneuverability for the F18 being a non thrust vectored aircraft is outstanding. It puts the F15 and F16 to shame. I mean dude is doing tail slides and cobras with zero thrust vectoring! Damn Sir you're a boss among bosses, a rose among thorns!

@Phillip Banes You literally HAVE to flight that slow in a dogfight if either opponent has fox 2s... If you make any significant separation at all you'll die. F-16s are not particularly impressive in HOBS fox 2 fights

@@Jacksonflax That is not true at all. Turn rate beats radius, and the 16 easily wins the rate fight. That being said, the 16 is still very impressive at low speed and has fantastic nose authority. Where did you hear is isn't good with HOBS?

I think they told the pilot, don't bother bringing it home, we'll bring you home on Virgin Air. Wow!! Been to Miramar countless times, Nellis, Edwards and I've never and WILL NEVER see an F-18 flown like that by our navy or marines. Simply outstanding.

well he clearly is an outstanding pilot, but in this case the aircraft has a lot to do with it. The finnish f18's are unique in that they have had a late in life software update which gives just about removes the angle of attack limit. Thats where those amazing pirouette's come from.

Like many of the previous comments, I've too have watched plenty of footage of F-18s and its manoeuvrability, but nothing as intense is this... For a second I thought I was about to witness a stalled flat spin he's that good... Man and Jet have become one right here!!

Its a finnish modification on flight surfaces of F-18 legacy hornet that removes angle of attack limiters. Most legacy hornets couldnt pull off these maneuvers

I thought the exact same thing. He was doing Maneuvers in that F-18 making it almost appear that he was using thrust Vectoring wich he does not have. Amazing.

@@KoteDarasuum Swiss F/A-18C has 9G and no longer have the angle-of-attack limiter. USN's classic Hornets has 7.5G and 45 degress angle of attack limits. There's no model number seperation between 9G and 7.5G Hornet models which is different from JSF F-35 program which has F-35A Block 3F (9G) , F-35B Block 3F (7G) and F-35C Block 3F (7.5G) model number seperation. F/A-18C 9G is effectively F-18L 9G reborn and continues the orginal YF-17's 9G high angle of attack dogfighter.

I've seen solo F-18 demos many times. Both from the Legacy Hornets to the new Rhinos.. Never seen any Hornet fly like this, never thought it can pull those maneuvers to this extent. Amazing! The pilot really pushed that plane. He flew it like he stole it!

Ukskoski flies this display bleeding airspeed purposefully most of the time. His timed handling of the elevator allows him to timely drop nose and regain energy again. And he does it for the whole duration of the display. He's actually pulled off the Hornet flight manual and disserted a master class on low speed handling and control. Knight Flight you've been there, wasn't it mind- blowing, was it?.

Well, living in Rovaniemi some 15kms from the base of FAF F11 I can say that it takes a Finn to maneuver Hornet like that :) That been said, when F-18 Hornets arrived to Lapland Air Command they were tested 2 on 1 against SAAB J35 Draken. Since Draken had been on service from 1972 and was equipped w/ Finnish software that was developed right until the end of service at 2000, the rumour goes that Draken "shot" one of the Hornets down but dogfight against second Hornet resulted in a draw. At first I couldn't believe it but now I know better. FAF F11, SwAF F21 & F19 forever!

That was by far the best FA-18 demo I have ever seen. Truly amazing. That pilot knows his plane like the back of his hand. That's one I would have loved to been at. Also must mention excellent camera work right up there with the pilot. Great video.

@G T Hornet won the Bader prize last year as well, with a different pilot. They removed AoA-limiters from F/A-18s’ computers a couple of years ago. The results are impressive, although so is the pilot. 🙂

One of the best pilots in Finnish Air Force. It is not an easy job to get in Finnish Air Force. We have a female sqdr commander in Finland......lieutenant colonel. Hornet is able to do "cobra" movement not only russians. Hyvä Arto !!!

Almost every modern fighter jet can do a cobra, but western pilots don’t typically use a cobra because it is a useless maneuver in a dogfight that leaves you in a low energy state and pretty much ensures you will get blown out of the sky

The f 18 isn’t credited like it should b. But that’s ok. It was designed to be primarily an aircraft carrier jet main purpose to protect the fleet. It is more than capable aircraft. It’s will slowly being phased out by the f 35.

Cobra is nothing special, it's just something the Russians show off. But most modern jets can do it and the F/A-18 is well known for its excellent high-AOA capabilities. It's a maneuver that isn't exactly useful in combat, but very spectacular at air shows.

5:03 - Plane starts and finishes a 4 second U-turn. That is amazing, and it's completely without thrust vectoring. That Hornet does impress, even with the Su 33 prapaganda flying around

Wow! I have seen a lot of f-18 demonstrations and this is probably the most elegant. The pilot reminded me of a figure scatter on ice. Smooth, graceful and effortless turns and I got the feeling the pilot may have some experience in competitive skiing or ice skating. A lot of what he did was marginally above a stall and yet always powering through in a manner that shows he understood exactly where he was in the flight envelope of this aircraft. I don’t think this particular demonstration could be done as well in an f-16 because of its unique aerodynamics. Great camera man / person by the way!!

Like the announcer said somewhere in the video this thing can land on a short highway airstrip. The reason why finland bought fighters made only for aircraft carriers is because FDF have different needs for their planes. Finnish airforce is able to setup a base pretty much anywhere which has a wide enough road using the same technology used in aircraft carriers. Because Finland have only 3 airbases which all could be destroyed in minutes. So basically Finland has aircraft carriers on land. Finnish airforce is buying new planes soon and the new planes must have at least the same capabilities or a VTOL.

I've watched the blue Angel's prolly 30 times the last 4 yrs working airshows and during their routine they dont perform these maneuvers. Now on the other hand a cpl days prior to the shows they fly over the field getting the lay out of the land and they mess around doing high speed fly overs and crazy skilled maneuvers

@@s8theninjawarrior916 f22 is the best,we don't know what manuevers the f22 can pull,because there is a one fighter pilot says that in an airshow that we've seen is not the maximum maneuver that US aircraft can do,US has strict regulations in airshows

Amazing pilot skils, Capt Arto handled this F18 beautifully and plane responded with grace, American enginering at its best and thanks to the videographer that did not lose sight of this beautiful aircraft and captured every detail of the aircraft, thank you Capt Arto and the camera man for his skils🤗

This plane has modifications done by Patria on the flight surfaces. The pilot is absolutely great no doubt but you couldnt pull these maneuvers with CF-18

Patrik Ravolainen CF-18 could pull most of the maneuvers off that are seen in the video, I’ve seen some extreme limits they reach (big into RCAF as I’m from Canada myself) but they couldn’t maneuver the way it does at the beginning where it rolls with minimal speed like a SU27

@@KoteDarasuum The angle of attack limits were in the F 18 flight control software. The new upgrades remove them. Not only the finnish got them also the swiss. Maybe Canada should upgrade their F 18s too.

The maneuver oftenly done by the superhornet but this pilot done it with fa18c, he deserves to be the winner

I remember reading somewhere that Navy trainer pilots always used the F-18 to represent any opfor aircraft as they can ease their abilities to match that of other air craft. They are that absolutely beyond maneuverable and fast as hell. It's incredible what that air frame is capable of.
