Song: Devil Dogs
Author Sabaton
Movies/Clips: The Lost Battalion, Apocalypse: The First World War, Battlefield Experience: The Meuse-Argonne Offensive, USMC Attack at Belleau Wood - June 6, 1918 - Marine Corps Museum
Lyrics for "Devil Dogs"
Kill
Fight
Die
That´s what a soldier should do
Top of their game, earning their name
They were the Devil dogs
In a war, machine
They were the USA marines
1918, USA intervene
Until now they were mainly observing
There in the wheat fields and a small piece of land
It´s a battle that will write history
5 times attacked, and then 5 times repelled
At the 6th time they managed to break the line
Heart of the corps, and a part of the lore
The deadliest weapon on earth
Dogs lead ahead, and attack through the led
Put to test, at the battle of Belleau
Clearing the forest and advance through the trees
It´s the end of the war that´s in sight
Hill 142, it´s a final break through
It´s the key to controlling the battlefield
Second to none, a marine and a gun
And the foes run in fear of their name
In times they are needed, such times they appear
When a leader has fallen, a hero arise
And inspire the lost into glorious deeds that
Would give them a name that live on to this day
When…
In times they are needed, such times they appear
When a leader has fallen, a hero arise
And inspire the lost into glorious deeds that
Would give them a name that live on to this day
Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?
Second to none, a marine and a gun
Raising hell as they ‘re fighting like dogs of war
Heart of the corps, and a part of the lore
The deadliest weapon on earth
Kill
Fight
Die
That´s what a soldier should do
Top of their game, earning their name
They were the Devil dogs
In a war, machine
They were the USA
And since then
They are the devil dogs of war
And then always
Are the USA marines

Dang, the Prussians were fighting devils on one front, and literal zombies on another. That's gonna be stressful, so much so that an entire division became ghosts.

Fighting in dense forest against entrenched positions with no artillery or air support. I don't know if that is crazy or brave. I watched a documentary where a French Citizen who lived near the woods painstakingly collected artifacts and created a timeline of events from old journals of US Marines. The Marines made him an honorary US Marine and the Frenchman wore that honor with pride.

As I read in the book "The Myth of the Great War" there were probably more guns in a typical American family farmhouse than in a German infantry squad. And the German Officer Corps had all grown up as youngsters reading tales of the Old West and the American Civil War and knew Americans hit what they aim at.

The "Five times attacked and five times repelled" verse I find so impressive honestly for both sides. Obviously it says a lot about the US forces, still managing an assault again and again until finally breaking through in the face of such losses and opposition. But I think it also speaks about the German forces too. Able to hold back Five assaults from the Devil Dogs themselves couldn't have been an easy task. Respect to the soldiers on both sides of that insanely pointless war.

No, it meant they repelled 5 assaults from the Brits and French before the Americans broke through first try, this happening because the Brits and French wanted the Americans to fight under British and French commanders, but if they could take over that area, they would be allowed to fight with American commanders (They won) i read it somewhere in this comments section, and prior I also thought they weathered 5 assaults from the devil dogs too

@@catalyst9905 True. Hitler was still the very clear villain and Germany, being extremely nationalist at the time, did his bidding. You wouldn't call a sailor a soldier, you wouldn't call an airman a soldier why because they're their own little thing just like the Marines.
