hello!
This isn't meant to be a tutorial, I just wanted to make a walkthrough on how I knitted this sweater. I've included short clips of how to cast on, knit a KFB, cast off, etc in the video, but all you need to know before knitting this cardigan is how to knit and purl! I improvised my own pattern and measured everything along the way by holding it up to my body. Timestamps below:
Supplies needed - 0:05
Yarn: www.joann.com/buttercream-coz...
6.5mm needle: shorturl.at/nuK38
12mm needle: www.michaels.com/clover-takum...
Tapestry needle: shorturl.at/foJQ3
36in long cable needle: hand-me-downs, don't know the brand or needle gauge. Any needle size between 6mm-10mm (depending on how tight you want the ribbing to be) should work fine, as long as the cable is long enough!
Measuring gauge - 0:17
Casting on - 0:43
Knitting the back panel - 01:19
Knit front & back increase (KFB) - 02:49
Casting off - 05:02
Knitting the front panels (make 2) - 06:20
*cast on # of stitches that allows front panel to be approx. 1/3 width of back panel
Seaming pieces together - 07:15
Knitting the sleeves (make 2) - 08:52
Knitting the trim/picking up stitches - 11:49
*tie your yarn to the piece before picking up stitches!!! (loop it around the edge and knot it as the yarn tail may slip out when you're knitting)
Weaving in the ends - 14:12
Thanks for watching!

TIP: When doing the sleeve I ran into a couple of issues, 1) make sure you cast on 1 more than what you wanted for the wrist area, I casted on 23 because i wanted 22 stiches, because to work in the round you have to take your most recent casted on stitch, but it on your right hand needle, and pass over the first casted on stitch over it. Which leaves you with only 22 instead of 23. I had forgotten about having to do this, until after four tries i realized my mistake, once you do this, the rib stitch will look right. 2) when switching to larger needles in the sleeve, i started at where my left over yarn from casting on was, and took the last knitted stitch off the smaller needle in my right hand, and put it on the larger needle and started knitting. 3) I ONLY did increases on the purl columns of the rib stitch. Because it looks really weird when you do it on the knit columns of the rib stitch, I had to start over because it looked like i was doing random purl stitches, and i’ll probably do just increases on those areas for another row or two. I wanted to share these tips because i figured it would help a lot of first time knitters. I will be more than happy to share some videos with techniques that you need to make this sweater that aren’t shown in this. Although, 2 & 3 were things i realized through trial and error and i just made up to make things work. EDIT: MAKE SURE YOU DON’T DO TOO MANY INCREASES. I increased from 22 to 54 and realized that it was way too much a couple rows in, ill have to pull out some rows all the way to my cuff again. which sucks, but i hope this helps those reading this so they know before getting into it. EDIT X 2: I JUST REALIZED home girl didnt do the sleeves in the round💀like i am. If yall are doing the sleeves in the round, then all these tips apply, but if you arent, then only no. 3 applies. edit 3: When you do the KFB on purl ribbed columns only, it creates these beautiful dimples in the sleeve near the cuff that are really cute

I just started tonight and did halfway through the back before running out of yarn. I ordered new yarn so hopefully they come soon. If I remember I may update when I finish it. Btw my knitting knowledge consists of knit, purl and how to start and finish it, so this is my first time making something like a cardigan. It looks so simple so I hope mine looks as good as yours. Update: I finished it like 2 months ago, now I remembered the existence of this comment. It turned out great!!! I would just recommend finding a way to Stich the shoulder parts together loosely, so it isn’t uncomfortable to wear. Other than that, I love the pattern and the tutorial!

Im currently knitting the second front piece!! Im so excited 😁 Im using US size 13 needles with Lion Brand Wool-Ease thick and quick yarn in fisherman. Its much more affordable than buttercream and is exactly like their size 15 wool yarn with the same colors for 3-4$ less depending on where you go. I love just knitting things, so if it doesnt fit me to my liking or etc, i’ll probably sell it for the price of the yarn.

@kitkatherine23 3 жыл бұрын
@@nathaliabavutti526 I just prefer using this wool/yarn, in my opinion (im sure im wrong) when knitting a garment like this in pieces, just check your inches/length/width. Making sure it fits your body especially when you dont make gauge is alot easier for me. I did i think the 2nd to largest amount of stitches for the back piece and 18 stitches for the front pieces. Im definitely no expert and Im not someone who minds just pulling the whole thing apart and starting again so my advice could be wrong🤷🏻‍♀️ but if it were me i definitely wouldnt use the yarn she uses because its just way too expensive for a whole sweater. Shes selling it for 65$ on her instagram and I did the math, thats wayyy below how much it would cost if she actually used 7 or 8 balls of yarn.

Are you intentionally twisting your knit stitches?
@xochitllopez9830
@xochitllopez9830 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is a nice tutorial, but did you know that you’re twisting your knit stitches? That’s why your stitches look a tiny bit raised/uneven. Stockinette knitting usually requires your knit stitches to be knit through the front loop, not the back loop, like you’re doing in this video. Your purls are fine though! Twisted stitches aren’t “wrong” (we mostly use them in the ribbing section of our projects), but it’s a bit unusual to do it when knitting a garment. Just leaving this here for you in case you decide to make more videos, and so that any beginner knitter can understand what these stitches are and when to use them! :)

Nope combination knitting. So knitting through the back is "correct" because that's the leading leg. And you can see when she's purling she's passing the yarn clockwise.

Hiya! I'm also a beginner knitter myself, and I've just finished sewing my first sweater (yay!). I found it extremely helpful to use circular needles (for flat knitting), because my straight needles couldn't hold all the stitches/fabric well (it was very very cramped difficult to work with). That being said, I'm sure there are ways to make straight needles work, but in my experience I lean more towards using circular :) hope this helps!

Hi Julianna, thank you! I didn't block my knitted pieces after, just because the yarn and needle that I was using gave me pretty uniform stitches and luckily this made it really easy to knit with an even tension all throughout the whole thing. I'd say that if your piece ends up a little bit uneven then try blocking! Some sources online say that blocking can change the size of your garment, but I think this just depends on the kind of yarn you're using (wool versus acrylic, etc) and the change in size isn't by a lot (I've seen numbers from 5-10%). Hope this was helpful!!

@@juliannaross1387 I would recommend blocking the pieces separately, just to make sure that when you're stitching all the pieces together, everything is even and lined up! But if you've already constructed the whole cardigan and would still like to block it, blocking might help even out the areas that are not near the seams (the "middle" of the pieces, if that makes sense!). Again, this might not be necessary if you see that your cardigan looks relatively even and that you're happy with the un-blocked outcome :)

Ok thank u! Also does blocking change the texture of your yarn? And if u need to wash your knitted piece of clothing, does it get bigger?

Can you make this by crochet?

You would have to considerably change the pattern to work with crochet, but if you work on it, yes you can

Is a 40in cable okay instead? I’m still new to this and don’t wanna mess it up. Also I’ve searched everywhere for a 12 mm needle all I could get was a 12.75mm I hope it doesn’t make a big difference even though they aren’t far off from each other you never know

I think a 40in cable will work fine, my needles were about 36in for the front ribbed trim. And a 12.75mm needle will work just fine :) Check the gauge for a more accurate measurement just to be sure though!

Shes using US size 15 yarn, if you plan on using anything smaller, get the needle size that fits the yarn. I know I didnt get gauge but because im doing more stitches most the time (on the back piece and the sleeves, so it kind of makes up for that loss in size. This pattern is very workable, i would recommend measuring yourself, and then making the pattern suit your fit. Any length of cable is good as long as the back piece can fit on the cable. You could magic loop the sleeves and do them in the round which is where I am currently on the project

Create a Gauge Piece, knit up in the stitch you prefer until you reach desired width (i typically do a 2x4 piece) You can also go to goodknitkisses dot com to use a gauge calculator, this will take into account the weight of yarn you chose to use and the ending size you wish your piece to be. Then it calculates all your cast on amount and rows needed.

What a lovely cardigan! I have some yarn that are the size 100g = 100 meter, that I want to use, and therefore get a less chunky sweater. How many more stitches do I need to add then?

It's hard to tell but what I would recommend is casting on like 10 stitches or something and practicing the knit, then once you've done a small section measure to see how big it is. Then you can do some maths and work out how many you need to cast on to get the right length for each section. Hope that makes sense!

I need HELP!!! This is the first time I've ever knitted in my life. I didn't think it would be so hard to make this cardigan. I'm just starting with the back part and I already have several problems. I started with 48 stitches, because I wanted an M-L size, a bit baggy. Eventually I realized that somehow I was increasing stitches and now instead of 48, I have 73! This is certainly not normal. Please, I need advice! I don't know when I did so many more stitches. Is there a way to fix it? On the other hand, with the 48 stitches it seemed that I wasn't wrapped around my whole hip :P I hope someone can help me, thanks a lot!

I did my first cardigan with kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hrmJZ6erlrvDhas.html . It’s good step by step. Second, you can do all 3 parts together till armpits and then separate it and keep going each part separately.
