I am working on a cowl and need to know how to do short rows, with wrap & turns and also picking up wrap & turns. There are many videos which are so helpful, but somehow, I always end up understanding yours the best. I'm so glad I can depend on your videos - there isn't a lot of hand movement or long explanations. I appreciate how you zoom in to the stitch so we can see exactly what you're explaining and you do it all with ease. You just do it so well. Thank you!

Hi Stacy, thank you so much for your videos. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve helped me in my knitting journey. However there’s one thing I struggle with and that’s tinking back W&T and/or German short rows. Last night I was working on a sweater that included W&T and as I was picking up the wraps I looked back and noticed a big loop sticking out. I think (but I’m not sure) that when I picked up the wrap I didn’t capture both stitches when I knit through the back. Anyway, I tinked back picking up the wrapped sts as you would k2tog. I couldn’t figure out how to fix the loop that was sticking out (but I fudged it) and then when I continued to knit the W&T sts that I’d tinked back on there was a hole. I struggled trying to figure it out for more than two hours. When I messed up one so badly, I’d go to the next W&T I had tinked back to and try to figure out the anatomy of the stitch. At this point it was 1 AM and I had so many BIG holes there was no option but to undo the sweater back to where the short rows began. This is the second time recently that I’ve had to frog my knitting due to being unable to correct W&T or GSR. I would so appreciate if you could do a video on this topic.

@icklecat1 Wrapping stitches is a way of working short-rows, which is a way of adding shape to the work. Short-rows are used in the toes and heels of socks, bust shaping, back-of-neck lengthening, etc.

Yes - I know what you mean, and I think I can help. If your pattern is written well (fingers crossed!) that should correct itself with blocking. When you're finished knitting, handwash the sweater and set it out flat to dry. Should do the trick. If you're impatient (like me) apply some steam from the iron to it without pressing down, then pat it out flat. That will give you a good indication if it is going to block out well.

Yes - picking up all of them, every time you come upon one, every time you get to one. Again, your pattern will let you know whether or not it is necessary.
@verypinkknits14 жыл бұрын
@misssoarneagle Yes - normally when you work short rows, you will work them for several rows, leaving unworked stitches on the ends of the needles the whole time. I just knit a lace shawl that had me working 50+ short rows, and it wasn't until the very last row that I had finally incorporated all of the stitches again. Follow the pattern you have there, it sounds correct to me. :)

@Silkroad1945 It is the nature of the w&t stitch that you're going to have an extra loop there when you pick up the wraps. It's always going to show (sometimes more than others, depending on your yarn and gauge). I've worked w&t stitches on a scarf, too, and you sort of have to accept the picked-up wrapped stitches as an element in the design. Wish I had a solution for you, but it's just the nature of the stitch.

Excellent tutorial!
@verypinkknits11 жыл бұрын
Yes, picking up the wraps can help with preventing holes in the work, especially if you're working in a loose gauge. But mostly it helps the work look smoother and more even, so that the short row turns are less noticeable.

Short sweet with close ups. dig it!
@verypinkknits12 жыл бұрын
@johnnysblues Are you twisting the wrap after you pick it up to knit it? If so, don't...just slide it up on the needle and knit it together with the stitch. Otherwise, holes in your work like this is usually just a matter of tension. Using 100% will help - it is a forgiving fiber that will hide mistakes like this after it is washed.
@sazji13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your sharing as always! The only thing I might suggest is that the close-up start a little earlier. We see the wrap as it's picked up; but it would be helpful to have it pointed out before, so we know just what we have to recognize. We noobs can be a slow bunch. :)

@schreinon What they're having you do is two things - a modified "Make 1", as well as working short rows. Short rows means that you turn your work (go from working the right side to the wrong side, or vise versa) before you have reached the end of the row. For instructions on Make 1, which is very similar to what they are asking for, search for "Make 1" in the search box on my channel page - I have a video for it. Beyond that, you will need to contact the pattern designer with your questions.

You need to do a section on fixing mistakes! Like what if you just so happen to drop a stitch that was wrapped? Or you’ve dropped a stitch that had a decrease or increase? Simple knit and purls are easy to fix, but what if they’re cables? I would seriously love a series of help on this!

I'm not sure what that might be without seeing your work, you might want to visit your local yarn shop for in-person advice. Blocking will help with little tension issues like that.

It shouldn't mess up the pattern if you choose to pick up wraps when the designer tells you it isn't necessary. So it's really up to you. If you prefer the way it looks when the wraps are picked up, you should be able to do that without messing anything up. :)

My pattern is worked in the round and for the short rows, I knit then w&t, purl then w&t, and so forth. After I do the short rows, it says to knit to the end of the round on the right side (so I'm picking up the w&t on the knit side) and they look good. But then I have to go around again and knit another round, but pick up the w&t made on the purl side instead. However, when I do this, it's super tight and I get a weird hole every time I manage to knit it. I'd love some help with picking up the wrap made on the purl side, on the knit side. Thank you!

After I pick up a wraps, either on the knit or pearl side, I see that there is a little loop on the knit side. There isn't a hole but the yarn sort of looks like it's skipping a stitch. Is this the way it's supposed to look? Or am I doing something wrong?

How do you get your skeins or balls of yarn wrapped the way it is? I just like the way it looks.
@verypinkknits8 жыл бұрын
When you buy yarn in a hank (not already wound into in a skein) you have to wind it into a "cake", which is what I have in this video. Nicer yarn shops have a ball winder and swift available to use, or they will wind it for you. Or, if you order a lot of yarn online, it's good to invest in your own. Here is my video on using a ball winder and swift: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ6XnJeIrZnMdYk.html

I have a project where i have to pick up the wrap and knit together but it says to then wrap the next stitch. this stitch already has a wrap on it from before (im working the heel of a toe up sock on circular knitting needles). putting another wrap on top doesn't seem right :/ is my intuition just wrong or does that work?

@verypinkknits10 жыл бұрын
Karen Grieves - Think about each bit of instruction as a different step - 1. pick up wrap and put it next to the stitch on the needle, 2. knit the wrap and the stitch together, 3. Knit three, 4. wrap & turn.
@Brandi.1337 жыл бұрын
How would you pick up wraps in a pattern where the purl side will be the right side of the work (in a pattern alternating knits and purls where the wraps occur on purl stitches) so that the wraps won't end up showing on the right side?
@verypinkknits7 жыл бұрын
When you pick up the wrap on either side, it is picked up on both sides. That said, when picking up the wrap on a purl stitch, I usually tip the needles toward me so that I can see the front of the work (and therefore see a knit stitch) while I'm doing it. Not totally necessary, but it's the way I find it easiest to pick up the wrap.
@SkeindeerKnits7 жыл бұрын
Hi Staci! I'm having the same question, but I don't really understand you answer. I'm knitting a garment where the front of the work has more purl. So, I'd rather the picked up w&t looked better on the purl side than on the knit side. Right now it looks pretty horrible. Any help greatly appreciated! :) (oh, and I love this tutorial. I've kept coming back to it for years (I don't to short rows much)).
