Working Yarn Overs when you're working a row of just knit or purl stitches is easy to understand, but they get more complicated when you're working both knit and purl stitches in the same row. This video takes the mystery out of more complicated yarn overs.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this tutorial! I am making a baby sweater for my new granddaughter and I got so confused by the pattern and made multiple mistakes. After watching your demonstration, I typed out a "cheat sheet " to use when going from knit to knit, knit to purl, etc. Now the pattern looks great so far 👍!!!

Thank you! This 10 year old video is priceless! For some reason I thought p yo k went clockwise. But you are showing all of the yo as counter-clockwise. Ugh. I have to start my project over but that explains it didn't look quite right. Thank you!!

Bless you. Now I can start knitting the beautiful baby blanket for my first great grand baby that has had me flustered. It’s an English pattern and the term used when YOing between the K and P stitch is YRN. The only instructions I could find for YRN is on a purl row. You’ve come through yet again.

So, going from knit to purl, your YO is one and a half, but going from Purl to knit, it is only a half - one third of the size of the knit to purl one. In any kind of decorative stitch I should think this must make a huge difference. When I just take the thread from the back of the k st over the needle to purl position, it is actually the same size as yours! Going from purl, yo, to knit, I can tweak the yo so it is the same size. Thanks for your excellent instruction!

A double yarn-over between K and P stitches would really be the same technique. The only thing is that you'll be adding one complete (normal) YO to the "half" (between a P and K) or the "one-and-a-half" (between K and P). Hope that helps!

I'm having a hard time picturing what you're describing...but if you've found a way to think about getting an extra, single wrap on the right needle that can be treated as a stitch on the next row, you've got a winner. :)

Do you have any tips for keeping the tension consistent between k yo p and p yo k stitches? I'm working on a project right now and I believe due to the extra yarn used at the k yo p stitch, it's looking a little off balance, and the holes for the k yo p stitches are much bigger than the p yo k stitches.

How do I knit into a yarn over that is already on my needle. I am knitting a hat circularly; I need to knit into the yarn over; do I knit into the back or front of the stitch.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 10 жыл бұрын
Maria - treat the yarn over like any other stitch, ignoring the fact that it isn't "knotted" at the bottom like normal knit stitches. When you look at it that way, you can see how you can work KFB stitches (knit front back) as easily as you would into any other stitch. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtN_rNCr2N20inU.html

How would you work a YO for the very last stitch before turning work. I have a lace pattern that has a step to do this. It’s a YO as last stitch then a YO as first stitch for following row.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 3 жыл бұрын
That is pretty much a double YO at the end of the row...I've never seen a pattern call for this before. There isn't much I can do to help you here in the comments...I recommend contacting the pattern designer for clarification and/or tips on working this. I can't understand why a pattern would use this when a different increase would solve a lot of problems.

Omg I am in hell and your videos help so much. I am however having a meltdown on this blanket. K1. yo. (P1. K1) twice. P1. yo. K1. Supposed to end up with 9 stitches. However when I get to that first yo before the first purl stitch...I'm not sure how to go into the purl. Then after the last purl, I'm supposed to yo but I don't know if I should wrap it again.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 8 жыл бұрын
+jamie handley - the video explains it better than I can here...you only want one wrap on the right needle when it calls for a YO, but you do need to pull the yarn forward between the two needles to work a purl stitch. A YO before a purl is a wrap-and-a-half.

Unless you're following a pattern that tells you otherwise, you knit the yarnover like a normal stitch, into the front "leg".

I'm having a very hard time doing yarn overs before a purl, something keeps going wrong no matter how many times I try and I just end up with weird loops over the needles when I try. I'm not sure what you mean by "half wrap" or yo and a half. Could you please explain or do another video about this?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 жыл бұрын
ilurvemv - this video is meant to explain exactly what you're asking. If you're following along with the video, I woudl guess that the "weird loops" you're describing are probably actually correct yarn-over stitches!
@ilurvemv
@ilurvemv 9 жыл бұрын
VeryPink Knits I would think they're correct except when I get to the next row of my knitting, those stitches are just huge loops on my needle (unlike regular normal, separate stitches) which can't be knit and are somehow crossed/mixed up with other stitches or over other stitches! It's hard to explain it but they don't look right at all.
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 9 жыл бұрын
ilurvemv - yarn overs can get tangled and caught on the stitches next to it, but it sounds like you may need to apply a bit more tension on your YO stitches if they are appearing as huge loops. If you're still having trouble, you might want to visit your local yarn shop and show them your work - they can probably give you more targeted advice.
