In this video from www.knittinghelp.com , Amy shares with you a simple method for creating a button hole in a knitted work.
If the button you're using is 4 stitches wide, make a 3-stitch buttonhole (as demonstrated). For a 5-stitch-wide button, make a 4-stitch buttonhole, etc.

Step 1 -- work to where you want buttonhole to begin. Bring yarn to front; slip 1 purl-wise, bring yarn to back.
Step 2 -- Slip 1 purl-wise, pass first slipped stitch over second. (repeat this part 2 more times--passing over 3 stitches total, for a 3-stitch buttonhole) Place last stitch back on left needle. Turn work.
Step 3 -- Cast on 4 stitches (for the 3 stitches you bound off, plus 1) using the cable cast-on method.
Step 4 -- Turn work (so RS is facing). Bring yarn to back; slip first st of left needle onto right needle and pass last CO st over it. ....You're done! Work to end of the row, or to the next buttonhole!

I couldn't make sense of the written pattern no matter how hard I tried. This video was super fast and super easy to do and understand. Thank you to the KZfaqr that made this video. It helped me to finish the main part of a project gift just in time for school for a buddy's 10 year old daughter.

OMG what a fool I have been. You make it look so easy and it is. I can not thank you enough, I have only been knitting for 2months now and I thought i would never learn to do a button hole. Your great so great at teaching how to do something. You did it slow enough and spoke very well and that is so hard to find in learning video's. I love your work in this, you made me feel relaxed and like I have done this for year's .Thank you so very much your the first person I have seen that teaches well.

You don't show it, but most KZfaq knitters put the last slipped stitch (with the last cast on stitch bound off over it) back onto the left needle and knit into it. This makes a massive difference to how that edge of the hole looks and removes the large float you get by just knitting into the next one.

Thank you for your instructions. I worked a buttonhole in my sweater following this older pattern I have and realized after knitting so many rows I did not like the way the buttonhole looked. Needless to say I ripped out the rows including the buttonhole. I came across your video and am looking forward to knitting a buttonhole that looks like yours. Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you! Nice video and clear instructions. I'm a beginning knitter so I can only do very basic projects and this made perfect sense to me. I'm finishing up a simple glasses case for my dad for Christmas and I decided to be adventurous and add a button. This really helped me out!
