Actually there were several early Bowie knives that did have clip points and a guard such as the original Musso Bowie. Plus some others from the 1820’s to the mid 1830s that are displayed in the KZfaq video ‘Bowie Knife 1820-1870’, Anyways the possible history between Bowie and Forest is fascinating and thanks for sharing it with us.

The Gaucho Facon or Criollo knife, resembling a thick spined french chef knife with a thick handle, carried inside a sash or belt behind the back, most likely resembles the original knife that Rezin Bowie gifted James for self defense. An ubiquitous design for that era. Later the James Black design forged in Old Washington Arkansas for James Bowie had the clip blade design for maximum penetration, a thick spine to parry sword canes & knives and incorporated a protective handguard. The British generically copied the american bowie design, albeit smaller, and mass produced them, shipping them to America where they were popularly items. They were most often carried by gentlemen, clipped inside the vest, under the overcoat, with the handle protruding from the vest arm hole. The common man carried it inside a sash or belt. Old tin type photos of Civil War era men posing with bowie knives & pistols often depict various sizes of bowie style blades but the commonality among them being a clip point. Skinners, butchers and other knives of the 1800s didn't possess a clipped point blade. So it's deduced that the clipped point blade became synonymous w/the post James Black model Bowie design. The clipped point design wasn't a skinning or butchering function but rather solely for combat. Thus, just as today many states still ban a double edged knife for it being solely a killing design, the bowie clipped point fixed blade was banned in many southern counties & states for it's design and use lending itself to homicide.

How many knives did Bowie have. I personally have 40. and if I give one away then I gave a knife away. You never linked the knife to the sandbar fight. Until you do this Bowie just gave the knife to forest.

What is the difference which kind of a big knife that f....ing Bowie had ? Saint Bartholomew and the story of his knife are much more interesting .

It's evident that any knife with scales affixed by rivets, rather than by pins, claimed to belonged to James Bowie can not be true. 1876 rivets were invented. Before then knife scales were affixed with brass pins. The sand bar duel was 1827, 49yrs before rivets were invented...Therefore any knife with riveted handle scales can not logically have been used in the Sandbar duel nor carried by James Bowie.
