I think you missed Richard's black eye in that last shot as they all turn to look up at Marta. Between watching Linda read the note and seeing Marta on the balcony, she decked him.

My fave line is when Ransom is yelling at Marta "you can steal our ancestral home" and Blanc laughs "Ancestral? Your daddy bought this place from a Pakistani millionaire in the '80s!" Which shows once more the family's arrogance and belief they're more elite than they really are.

The way Ashlee says “there’s no way he noticed that little spot on her shoe” yet Ben says to Marta almost every time he sees her “Something is afoot” 🤣🤣🤣

I just gotta call out the fact that you said “I would throw up with the anxiety” right before Martha’s lying/vomit affliction is revealed is almost creepy. You are prescient! 😳😆

One little detail is that Richard was the cause of Linda finding out... He threw the baseball out the window when he found the note. The dog finds the ball in the yard and brings it back to Linda, who knows it's supposed to be in Harlan's office. So she returns it, spotting the secret last note from Harlan on the desk. If Richard had never thrown the ball out the window, Linda wouldn't have had any reason to go into the office and find the note.

As a random aside, that sweater was SO popular the knitting community went nuts over it and came up with several copy cat patterns so people could make their own. Chris made that sweater look GOOD.

The *best* part of Martha being on the balcony looking down at the Thromby family is that she's drinking coffee out of the "My house, My rules, My coffee" cup.

Harlan was played by the late Christopher Plummer, who became a household name from playing Captain von Trapp in _The Sound of Music._ Yet another reason for you to watch that film. Go was developed in China about 4,500 years ago it is considered the oldest game continuously played until today. "Go" is the Japanese name for the game.

Fun fact: the lawyer reading the will is played by Frank Oz, he was the puppeteer and voice of, among others, Miss Piggy and Yoda. He also directed several films including Dark Crystal, Little Shop of Horrors, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Amazing person.

In the movie commentary on the DVD, the director mentioned an amazing perfect accidental music choice with this movie. He was asked if the song choice was intentional and admitted it wasn't. When Ransom and Marta are talking in the bar, the song playing in the background is "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot. The song is about Cathy Smith, whom he had an affair with. Cathy Smith later became famous for having been the person who gave John Belushi the drug overdose that killed him.

Ransom's sweater from the restaurant became famous. People were burying it and taking selfies. It was a funny thing because he filmed this movie around the same time he filmed Endgame so he still had his Captain America body. That body doesn't fit with the character of a spoiled rich guy. So they stuck him sweaters to try and hid his muscles. It REALLY didn't work with that particular sweater though, which made it extra funny. That poor sweater looked like it was dying on screen tying to hold all those muscles in. 🤣

I love how you've begun picking up on the little choices that make movies! Things like how Marta was placed in front of the knife donut and the ticking clock showing the passage of time, stressing out Marta, passing the plate to Marta as he talks about how important she is... These are the little bits that help to build such a perfect film, and its so fun that you're picking things up!

I remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that.

Instantly became my favorite movie. There is sooooooo much detail that is usually missed. The first moment that Blanc sees Marta as she’s stepping out onto the porch, you see him glimpse down at her shoes, proving that he knew from the beginning. His various references to shoes/feet as he’s talking to Marta (“something’s afoot, eh Watson?”) are further evidence. When Marta is at Random’s house, in the background are a row of the bottles used to bomb the medical office, minus one. When they show the clip of the flashback of him mailing the article and cash to Blanc, they are all there.

You were so sharp watching this movie! You were right all along, she didn't give him enough morphine to kill him. Brilliant noticing the plate being handed to an RN, and so much more. Maybe your best reaction yet Ashleigh!

The cast in this movie is just insanely good. Linda's husband Richard is Don Johnson, most well known for being in the TV series Miami Vice. Benoit Blanc is Daniel Craig, the latest James Bond, who is having great time doing a deep south accent. Even the lawyer reading the will? That's Frank Oz, aka Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy! Toni Collette you just saw in Little Miss Sunshine. The security tech is not just old, it's crazy old. All of that equipment is from an 80's Radio Shack. The director Rian Johnson is well known for deconstructing a genre and inverting it. So we got a murder mystery where we KNOW how the victim died, but we're still unraveling things. He also directed the 2nd sequel Star Wars movie, the Last Jedi, but his effort there was less appreciated.

20:57 "He is a character, isn't he?" Understatement! That's M. Emmet Walsh, one of the all-time greatest character actors. He appears in virtually all Coen Brothers films but has been in a slew of others over the years, I guarantee you've seen him in something. Also: If you like Biscoff cookies, it might interest you to know that they make a spread. It spreads just like peanut butter but tastes just like Biscoff cookies. When I worked at a crepe stand, we would frequently use it for dessert crepes, the most common being Biscoff spread with strawberries and homemade whipped cream. My dad watched this and told me I needed to see it so we saw it the next day together. Next day we brought my sister, and I think a few days after that we got my mother to see it. Every time we picked up new details, extra background story beats and clues. It's well worth a rewatch and fortunately the comments are pointing out a few details like Linda dealing with Richard.

You called it from the beginning that he didn’t OD, great job! So happy you watched this, it’s become one of my favorite movies. The cast is stellar and the old money fall vibes are perfect. Now you need to watch Glass Onion, the fashion is AMAZING! Benoit serves looks the whole movie and the rest of the cast is fantastic as well! I know there is supposed to be a third movie coming out and I hope it’s set in winter or spring since we got fall with Knives Out and summer with Glass Onion, I hope we can eventually get a movie for each season!

Seeing the Murder She Wrote reference reminded me that Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony winner Angela Landsbury passed away this year. If you would like to watch a movie as a tribute to her, she won the Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 1962's The Manchurian Candidate. Great movie, by the way.

I was amazed at how you just solved large parts of the mystery during the beginning exposition. this film is solid in how precise all the hints are laid out, but you also have a great eye for detail to pick up a lot of points were this movie goes against expectations.

❤ Now you need to watch it at least twice more. Once to pick up more details, and then again with the commentary on. Oh, and I enjoyed the deleted scenes too; they tell how *desperate* Walt and Joni were to get some of the inheritance money. 47:16 Ransom wasn't 'almost a killer'. He tried to kill his grandfather by proxy, but he actually did kill Fran. That moved him up the notch and will send him to jail for a long time.

Ransom's sweater basically became its own character after the movie came out. *Everybody* loved Chris Evans in that sweater. If you're looking for another fun Christmas movie, check out the absolutely hysterically funny The Night Before, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan, and Anthony Mackie. And also Michael Shannon, who played Walt in Knives Out.🤣

Another murder mystery movie with Christopher Plummer that is worth checking out is Dolores Claiborne, which is based on the eponymous Stephen King novel.

The actor, Don Johnson playing Linda’s husband, is a good villain in “Tin Cup (1996)”. He’s not evil just a d-ck competing w/ Kevin Costner. Very inspirational movie for show offs. Also check out Daniel Craig, “Det. Blanc” here in “Logan Lucky (2017)”. His Southern accent & over the top character is even funnier; a big departure from his typical frosty James Bond role.

This is one of the most rewatched movies for me since it came out, I just like everything about it so much. One of my favorite scores to a movie ever.

I live next to several of the locations they filmed this movie at. The restaurant Ransom and Marta are at was The Flat Penny in the town of Clinton, MA... where I lived at the time. The state evidence lab is actually the old Registry of Motor Vehicles in Marlborough, MA... where I used to live and work for about 20 years. And the town where the laundromat is and where they were chasing Marta and Ransom through is Maynard, MA... where I used to party all the time. I know several of the firefighters from the scene at the evidence lab. I love this movie not only because of all the locations and people, but because it kicks so much ass. Rian Johnson really knows how to cast his films, and he crafts such a great story. This was such a fun time in theaters.

I'm so glad you’ve finally seen this, and so glad you loved it! I've been obsessed with murder mysteries myself since watching it, and i think you'd love Glass Onion (the next Benoit Blanc adventure, technically the sequel to this, only Benoit is the only returning character) as well as some classic murder mysteries like Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile (tho most would rather you watch the originals than the recent remakes) or any of the other Agatha Christie/Poirot films. Here's hoping you get to see more!

This film is even better the second viewing because you can now see all the little clues you missed the first time and get a better appreciation for all the little hints placed on screen by the filmmaker.

When Ashleigh made that Murder She Wrote comment, I instantly thought of the original The Manchurian Candidate. I know Ashleigh would really get into this one and absolutely love it.

Don't forget that they had that mug in the start that ties directly to the ending where she is drinking from the same mug, my house my coffee my rules.

This movie single-handedly revived the classic murder mystery genre. More impressively, it did it while implementing amazing themes and symbolism. Knives Out is not only a top-notch whodunit. it is also a critique of MAGA-era anti-immigration and white supremacy as well as an attack on liberal paternalism. The family represents various forms of establishment America and Marta represents diversity, minorities, and immigrants. The family acts as if they love her, but their acts speak louder than words: Don Johnson's character handing Marta the plate even though she is a nurse - a degreed profession, the running gags about how none of them get Marta's country of origin right because they only want to be seen liking her but don't really care about her, and their condescending liberal affection that has greed behind it (see, e.g., the friendly phone call). The closing shot, with Marta standing above them all on the balcony of the "house" (read "country") which used to be theirs but which she now owns, is saying that, despite MAGA efforts, those who are hard working, honest, and kind will end up beating those who seek to oppress people for personal gain. AMAZING that they can do this while also giving us a whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie.

The moral of this story - no matter what ideological differences they may have, or how much they may hate each other, Rich people will always band together to protect their wealth. And all their noises about "being part of the family" or "caring about people less fortunate" will go right out the window when their privilege is threatened.

Two things about this movie. #1. Grandfather killed himself because he knew someone was trying to off him, he tried to hint it to her... all of the people he was cutting off, he knew that it was only time before the person would try again. He had already wrapped up things, so he was okay to go. The other thing is how Fran is dead and the family isn't upset about it at all. They were truly seen as the "help" and don't deserve any of that money.

You missed the part in the last where Martha holding the cup in the belcony of the house alone, and the cup has written "My Home, My Rules" in it. while every member was outside of the house. soooo satisfying.

She had dirt on ALL OF YOU... and her shoes too. Missed opportunity. 😂 Great video. Glad you liked it. One of my favorite Whodunnits.

Ashleigh....The woman who you think looks familiar from scary movies is Toni Collette. You've seen her in "The 6th Sense" as the mom. If you really want to have fun, check her out in a TV show called "United States of Tara" with a young Brie Larson. The older man who could "get it" is Don Johnson, 80s "heartthrob" of Miami Vice fame. You might have seen him in some Tarantino movies; he was also married to Melanie Griffith, and they had a daughter Dakota Johnson of the "50 Shades" movies. The game played with the black & white stones is called "Go." Think of it as a Chinese war strategy game, ala chess. It's almost 5,000 years old and is super fun, but not many know how to play it.

M. Emmet Walsh is always a character. I believe you saw him last in The Jerk as the crazed gunman.

Linda punched Richard. When the family turned to look at Marta, Richard had a fresh shiner that was focused on before zooming out.

Hands down, one of 2019's best. So well crafted with the ensemble cast and good storytelling. The movies of the 'Who-dun-it' are far a few in between. But this is a great homage to the genre. Taking stories of old and a well put together package. Daniel Craig (Benoit Blanc) & Ana De Armas (Marta) worked on this before making 'No Time to Die' (the 25th James Bond film). Christopher Plummer as Harlan the author was his final film role, passed away in 2020. When they announced the sequel with Daniel Craig reprising Blanc, I was ecstatic. Now that he's done being 007, he could play in this franchise for many films. The sequel aka Glass Onion (2022) on Netflix had a one-week release in theaters before streaming a month later. It has the same formula, same director as the first installment and Daniel Craig as Blanc is too good.

Oh my gosh, does this mean we're get to see the sequel Glass Onion soon? Also, if you like the whodunit aspect of it, you gotta check out the recent film series based on Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novels, starting with Murder On the Orient Express (Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and many more).

In the scene where Meg calls Marta and asks her to renounce the inheritance, I always assumed the family made her call Marta. I mean, we know that of the family members, she is the closest to Marta, plus the way they were all gathered around looking at her definitely seems sketchy. I can just imagine them saying "you're the closest to her, you should call and ask her to give us the money, she'll listen to you". Maybe that's not what the movie was implying but thats the vibe I always got. Anyway, fantastic movie and I highly recommend the sequel

Your continued voyage in film has been great to watch. I love that you keep commenting on Ryan's direction choices; the camera moves, the shot framing. These are the kind of things that you wouldn't have noticed even a year ago.

I have a theory. Harlen knew exactly what had happened as soon as she said she could not find the naloxone. He knew Ransom set this up. Because like Beniot says, “You are good nurse.”

I love the detail that Marta at the end is drinking from a cup that says "my house"

I thought it was Chris Evans who was the murderer only because actors who play good guys for a long time, always play a villain right after and this was after Captain America role finished. Literally the only reason I thought it was him; once it looked like Marta accidentally did it, I stopped trying to figure it out. Great misdirect!

“Something’s a foot”, “Fall at the feet”, “The Game is afoot”, Le Blanc kept dropping hints that he knew she wasn’t the killer. I love the details you catch when you rewatch the film and see among Hugh's row of bottles in his house one is missing which was used for the morgue fire. When Richard throws the ball out of the office, it was fund by one of the dogs and given to Linda. If he had never done that she would have never found the letter. Please watch The Sound of Music to see Christopher Plummer (he was Harlan Thromby in the film). The lawyer was Frank Oz who directed Little Shop of Horrors and you've previously seen in films like Bues Brothers and American Werewolf in London.

I saw this movie in theaters and loved every minute of it! This is the type of movie where when you rewatch it, you notice something new every time. Great job guessing!

Used to do storyboards and contract concept scene designs. Always got asked if you needed to draw well for this type of career. Truth? It helps, but the best is being able to take and show direction will be best for this career. And thanks to Knives out, is absolutely fun inside and out. Ever get a chance or bored and want awesome, search for the the storyboards for Knives Out. And compare it to any other major film, a real treat that is just as entertaining as the movie. The movie broke the mold on what is and isn't required for production to be entertaining.

FUN FACT: That southern detective Benoit Blanc is played by Daniel Craig ..who also played James Bond in 5 Bond movies

SPOILER: Our first hint that something was off - the fact that Harlan was able to plan their whole cover-up in five minutes. Based on what Marta said about the symptoms of an overdose of Morphine it seems unlikely that he would've been clear-minded enough to think up a plan like that.

The handheld shaky camera bit was a happy mistake where something happened where the dolly got stuck on the track. So, the camera operator released it from the tripod and went handheld. Rian Johnson (writer/director) liked the take. Toni Collette is the actress who plays Meg’s mom. She came out in Hereditary, The Sixth Sense, Muriel’s Wedding, and so much more. Writer/director Rian Johnson's first movie was a thriller/mystery set in a high school, called Brick (2005), and it starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt from the Batman movies. Since then, Gordon-Levitt has appeared in every single one of Johnson's movies somewhere. In this, he has a vocal cameo as the voice of the detective on the soap opera Marta's sister is watching at the beginning: "We have the nanny-cam footage!" You recognize Toni Collette from the scary (but beautiful) movie The Sixth Sense, where she played Cole's mother, and Little Miss Sunshine. She is also super-famous for Hereditary, which is probably also why you associate her with horror movies. Yes, that was director Frank Oz, voice of Ms. Piggy and Yoda and director of Little Shop of Horrors, as the family's lawyer. Rian Johnson's previous film was the eighth Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, which connected him to Oz. The sweater was a huge sensation with fans of the movie. It was therefore really funny to see you literally stop dead in the middle of a sentence upon seeing it. As others have said in the comments here, when Richard finally turns around at the end, he has what is going to become a black eye, so Linda clearly socked him. People said in the Twitch stream that you are aware Glass Onion is the second Knives Out film with Benoit Blanc. Johnson is already committed to making a third film as well, as after the runaway success of this movie, Netflix gave him a ton of money to develop two more. He's said that he and Daniel Craig are willing to keep making them as long as they feel they have good ideas for them. If you liked this, you should definitely check out not only Brick, which is another great mystery and very fun to watch (and features a couple actors who reappear here), but also his very underrated con-man movie The Brothers Bloom (2008).

A well-done murder mystery is a beautiful thing. For another multi-layered and... intriguing whodunit, I suggest Dead Again, starring Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Robin Williams and Andy Garcia. You absolutely will not regret it.

This was the first movie my wife and I went and saw in the theater after COVID restrictions were lessened. It was awesome; one of the most multi-layered whodunits we had seen in a long, long time. And again, if you're looking for a movie with twists and turns, I really can't recommend the 1986 Danny DeVito/ Bette Midler film "Ruthless People" enough.

OMG, I developed such a crush on Ana de Armas after Bladerunner 2049. Her presence in this movie made it so much more interesting to me.

Love that comment about Ransom's sweater. That was a whole thing when this movie first came out. Throughout the movie, Harland's painting shows him scowling. In the last time we see it, the expression has changed. Now he's smirking.

Glass Onion is sort of a Knives Out sequel of sorts. It's a murder mystery with Daniel Craig's same character solving the mystery. It's not quite as good as Knives Out, but it's fun with a great cast.

One of Jamie Lee Curtis’ first roles was a few lines as a waitress in an episode of Columbo called the “Bye bye Sky High IQ Murder Case”. It’s really a tiny role but she absolutely kills it. She basically steals the scene as little more than a featured extra. Columbo is an amazing tv series, highly recommended, but just that scene would be worth watching to see a super young JLC showing that she’s been a legend her whole life, no matter what she’s given to do.

That accent, I say, that accent you are hearin’ in such dulcet tones is called a Foghorn Leghorn, and only addin’ to his glory is his name, Benoit Blanc, ‘Benoit’ meaning ‘blessed’ and ‘blanc’ which means ‘white’. So our hero is literally named ‘white savior’ and that does indeed make him my new favorite detective

Oh, and about the "I don't know who that man is - Could get it!"-man... That's what the girls said in 1984. That's Don Johnson of Miami Vice fame.

The grey haired guy with the moustache, Jamie Lee's hubby, was Don Johnson. The original James "Sonny" Crockett from the original Miami Vice TV series, and after that the titular star of Nash Bridges. Big big heart throb in the 80s-early 90s, used to be married to Melanie Griffith. It's not that he hasn't been working very steadily since those TV series and is a good nostalgia name in a cameo, but he was never like a huge mega movie star in big productions even though he probably could've if he wanted to.
