Making the "gentleman detective" a side character in the mystery instead of the lead was such a great call, I haven't ever seen that before. There's a lot of mystery novels out there so I'm sure it's been done but it felt really unique. I'm hoping glass onion can find a similarly fresh twist on the genre

Rian Johnson said that one of the great things about Agatha Christie's Poirot stories is that they never focused on Poirot himself. Technically, Poirot was always a side character just like Blanc.

@@ZukoHalliwell That's interesting! I've never actually read the Poirot books, I've just got memories of watching episodes of the BBC series when I was young. I'll need to revisit that at some point.

As someone who’s read all her mystery books, her detectives are often side characters. In some cases, they appear toward the middle or even the end of the novel. In a way, these are classic Christie

@@icyboi13 Yes, late in life Christie said in an interview something to the effect of "In the early books Poirot was the viewpoint character, but now you hold off his arrival as long as you can."

Great reaction! 😊 In regard to the toxicology report, I believe the idea is that because of the obvious suicide, there wouldn’t be a need for an autopsy; autopsies aren’t done automatically unless there’s suspicion of foul play or the victim is younger. An elderly person committing suicide wouldn’t really fit the requirements. The reason this was on the police’s radar is because the detective was hired and that put into question the cause of death. I think media makes it seem like autopsies are always done, when that’s actually not the case.

very true, my dad died recently and they actually weren't sure exactly how he died, so they just put their best guess on the death certificate, no autopsy. :/ we would have had to pay for it if we wanted one done, and they're pretty expensive. but yeah, in the movie's case it was very obviously a suicide, so no need for an autopsy unless the family specifically ordered one done, and they had no reason to suspect anything so they didn't

one of my favorite movies of all-time. besides my own personal reasons, i just love how much heart this movie has. i always cry when blanc tells marta that she’s a good nurse, and i love how her saying that she’s not “playing to win the game, [she’s] trying to paint a beautiful picture” ends up being the way she “wins.” also the fact that the thrombeys were all over the political spectrum but even the most liberal of them turned on her (even though she’s “family”) the moment their wealth was threatened. it’s an unfortunate but true reflection of society tbh. so many cool things in this movie but one of my favorite details from this film is the expression on harlan’s portrait changing from a stern one to a smirking one in the end. i saw glass onion in the theaters three times and it’s a much bigger story, wonderfully complex and layered (which makes it great for repeat viewings!!), but still retains that heart that makes these movies so special. even though it’s a sequel it really doesn’t attempt to be anything like knives out, so it’s better not to expect much similarity.

I know people don't think clearly when they're panicked, but Harlan wasn't showing any symptoms of overdose-- his cognition was just fine, his breathing was just fine. The difference between the 10 minutes Marta predicted he'd have before dying and the 15 minutes the ambulance would have taken to arrive doesn't take into account her doing rescue breathing or chest compressions, which she would have done to buy him more time (as she did later with Fran, whose OD had happened much longer ago). I wish he'd realized that he might be the expert at mystery writing, but she was the expert at nursing.

Loved your reaction, thanks! My favorite TV detective show is Elementary, IMO the best Sherlock Holmes homage. All the characters have long arcs developing interrelationships over the seasons, and the writing is wonderful. (Sherlock starts as a jerk and evolves.) The setting is New York and the city itself becomes a character. Sherlock is a recovering drug addict, Watson is a former surgeon who has been hired by his father as a temporary sober companion, and Moriarty…well, I’ll let you find out. I have many favorite episodes. In Season 1, I especially recommend the pilot, the second episode (where we meet Detective Bell so the team is together), and two others (“Leviathan” and “Snow Angels.”) Season 1 and Season 4 are my favorites; in Season 4 we meet Sherlock’s overwhelming father Morland, played with magnificent panache by John Noble. Overall, there are a few episodes I skip when rewatching, but I can’t think of a TV series with better writing, ensemble acting, or production. There is a lot of very fine humor and an overall theme that values what is truly important. Jonny Lee Miller embodies Sherlock Holmes in all his talents and vulnerabilities, and Lucy Liu complements him. You can tell the whole cast loved working together.

Although the BBC _Sherlock_ is more clever and has cooler cinematography, I eventually I realized I liked _Elementary_ more because the characters are better developed. Or at least, I would prefer _Elementary_ if it stopped at Season 6---that was a perfect ending, and Season 7 makes the whole entire show feel worse to me. 37:30 _Castle_ also went on too long, as Eric says, although that was a slower decline overall.

Great reaction! If you're looking for another murder-mystery movie, I would suggest a classic earlier Agatha Christie adaptation, Murder on the Orient Express (1974). It has a glamorous location, an absorbing puzzle, a glorious soundtrack, and one of the great all-star casts, including another James Bond (Sean Connery).

I love how you say what the characters are going to say before they say it, like the “…But?” after they say Ransom’s a good kid and the “Yes” to _Did he ask you to drive?_ and “Shit.” once the knife turned out to be a prop Also, the “his whole head is in the donut hole :D” comment was really funny You’re also the only KZfaqr I’ve seen to recognize on first watch that the baseball Richard throws leads to Linda finding out about this cheating, so kudos for that!

The throw-up on Chris was actually baby food, but it's still gross 🤢 "Why can I never beat you at this game?" "Because I'm not playing to beat you, I'm playing to build a beautiful pattern." "Marta had now outplayed you once again, by having a kind heart... by saving Fran's life. Though it meant her losing the inheritance and going to jail, she didn't play your game." Also a great detail: Richard was looking for the letter that Harlan wrote to Linda about him cheating and opened it, assumed Harlan tricked him, got mad and threw a baseball outside. There Benoit picked it up, put it in his pocket and later tossed it to one of the dogs in exchange for the broken piece of railing. At the end we see Linda petting the dog that still has the ball, taking the ball and bringing it back to Harlan's study, noticing the letter Richard had (stupidly) left there. Without Richard trying to cover up his cheating and getting angry, she might never find out. ~ poetic justice ~ Edit: oops, I see you already commented on that 😁

The one thing that bugs me about the film is if the morphine overdose is deadly within 15 minutes, how does Fran survive for 2 hours (8:00 with Ransom to 10:00 with Marta)?

Yes! I'm so glad you watched this movie. It's one of my favorite of all time, and I have a vomit phobia so that's definitely saying something. Turning it from a "whodunnit" to a "oh shit how is she going to get away with this" pretty early on, and even that being a misdirect are all strokes of genius and really set this movie apart for me. But I think my favorite bit is clearly showcasing how, even though this family seems diverse in political views, at the end of the day they're all entitled rich white people and they will close ranks to protect what they view as rightfully theirs from "outsiders" As always it's super cool to see your reactions and hear your thoughts on these kinds of plots. Now if you'll excuse me I'll go watch your Glass Onion vid immediately 😅
