www.newmexicopb... - For centuries, Native Americans of the arid Southwest used a system of ponds and gravity-fed ditches (acequias) to grow crops with the little water they had. When the Spanish arrived in 1598, they were quick to adopt this system, establishing a unique tradition of irrigation and agriculture.

Cleaning and maintaining acequias is an honorable tradition.

When I lived near Cimarron, I would hear the meteorologists down in Albuquerque on the TV complain about the chance of thunderstorms during the summer monsoon season. How crazy is that?

We used to play in the acequia by my aunts fields under the shade of an ancient apple tree. The land has been in my family for hundreds of years. I've seen a big change since the sixties. Less farmland and more expensive homes on the land, bought up by rich gringos that will never understand what we have known for centuries.

September the days when people were screaming the people of New Mexico have long known work has to be done don't question it it just has to be done you want to survive these things have to be done. Just simply that. Too many people whining complain about it and seeing any more. These canals were built by the Spanish when they came here. Everybody says well Cuba was once full of water and they drained it. They move the water around so people can survive. Have survived here for hundreds of years. Pilgrims came they couldn't survive on their own they had to turn to so many other people to try and survive. The Spanish worked with the natives and this is their legacy. The canal system that the Spanish built is basically based every other canal and water system in the US is based on what they brought. To be proud of. New Mexico is built on cooperation.

Great program!!!! Every year our dolores water shed gives us life all the way to towac (Ute mountain Utes) and every year we fight the state of Colorado- we finally(the share holders)had to hire a legislator to write in to legislation that the state could not take from us our rights ! They still tried. The only reason they want the water is for big boats!!!! Imagine hispanos no longer being able to do right by the land just so a boat can float!

This is a very well presented program. I learned a lot about New Mexico in the 4 years I was stationed at Roswell Walker Air Force Base. Really great people and being from Minnesota I saw water for the first time, some times you can't see what is right in front of you. Best of luck with your state.

poem shows specialness of acequia partidas 1576 laws inf est of villages and water rights - spells out acequias need to run. show respect for water rigthts. cherish water, rights reflected that. people shared equally. water beyond a commodity - culture. erosion is a danger and lack of interest now in land practices makes it greater. need set examples of how use water properly, if see running into road wont take seriously. monetary benefit to reallocating water from these regions, but ultimately cultural and ecological disaster if so. go back and know history in order to mediate.
