These are the final minutes of the series finale episode "Just Like Old Times: Part 2", the 19th episode (344th overall) from the fourteenth-and final-season of the long-running 1979-93 CBS drama "Knots Landing". The show ran for 14 seasons, the same as its' parent series, the wildly popular 1978-91 drama "Dallas" This episode aired as a special two-hour series finale on the night of Thursday, May 13, 1993
Karen Fairgate McKenzie (Michele Lee, the only actor to appear in every episode) and her second husband Marion Patrick "Mack" McKenzie (Kevin Dobson) are throwing a barbecue to celebrate the return of their best friend, the long-suffering Valene Clements Ewing (Joan Van Ark), who had spent the season kidnapped, but was found alive in this episode. Her three-time husband Garrison "Gary" Ewing (Ted Shackelford, who along with Lee, stayed the entire series, but didn't appear in every episode) goes to help Mack with stuff for the party.
Karen and Val then spy a new couple moving onto the cul-de-sac, apparently buying their first home. Val and Karen smile and are more than likely reminiscing on their first time as new homeowners on the cul-de-sac. Gary returns to see a car pulling up in the front of the house that belonged to former neighbor Claudia Whittaker (Kathleen Noone), the sister of the series male troublemaker Gregory Sumner (William Devane). Val, Mack and Karen also are curious to see who the other new arrival to the block is.
The curiosity turns into a stunned, awkward shock the new arrival steps out of the car and is revealed to be none other than Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing Sumner (special guest star Donna Mills), the home-wrecking , gold-digging vixen that raised holy hell-and-eyebrows on the cul-de-sac from 1980 to 1989, and who happens to be the ex-wife of Gary and ex-sister-in-law of Karen.
Abby announces that she heard that Claudia's house was up for sale, which happened to be her old house, so she bought it. Gary is tongue tied as Abby looks at him with her seductive eyes. Val, who already knows Abby's history and has doubts that she changed, quickly grabs Gary's arm, says a polite hello to Abby, before walking into their house (There was no way in hell Val was going to let Gary near Abby for a second).
Abby just smirks and shrugs to a speechless Karen, "just like old times, isn't it?". She smiles at her former-sister-in-law before going into her own house. Mack just shakes his head in quiet amusement. In the last shot of the series, Karen's shocked face looks over at Mack, then to Gary and Val's house before freezing in shock at Abby's house. She then smiles wryly and shakes her head, almost as if to say "here we go again". And life on the cul-de-sac on Seaview Circle comes to end......at least for another four years until the reunion movie.

@@Brad81980 as you said correctly, it was pure genius with Abby coming back and Donna Mills played it so well. Knots Landing today would not even have made it past the first season. I'd like to see a reboot, but one done very carefully, as I think it still has life left in it.

There are very few years left for a great reboot “continuation”. All new families there and a mix of younger generation continuity would not do well. We lost Kevin Dobson last year. It could be explained that Mack passed away if they did a reboot. Even if Ted and William pass it could be the women as leads. But the time is NOW to. The show could bow out after a season if it gets low ratings, or go on for at least a few, before Michele, Donna, Joan and Ted either pass or are too old to do one. The latest would be I’ll guess circa 2025. That’s 4 years away. All the cast will be 80 and older then. Who knows if they will all be around? I doubt William Devane will be up for it by then. He’ll be around 85...

I love that Val is good-natured about Abby returning. It tells us that she is finally secure in her relationship with Gary (yeah, she walks him away, but its sort of all in fun). Also, remember that when Sid died, Val was the one comforting Abby. There is such a long relationship there and Val is probably not that irritated that Abby is back. Shes happy (as we are) that we are, for all intent and purposes, starting over at the beginning(ish).

This is a strange thing to say but back in 2011 I used to live in an apartment complex on a dead end culdesac and everyone else in the building had their fair share of problems and drama but we we're all pretty close. We used to joke that it was like Knots Landing. Well, we've all since moved on and sadly never kept in touch and every so often I watch this scene and think of them.

Yeah. That are times and themes in life like that. I remember "the old neighborhoods", the dramas, the different people and their problems(mine too) Many times I wonder what happened to some of those folks. With the internet I've been able to locate many of them-some dead, some alive, a few even close by where I live now. But I don't contact them for the reason below. The former places and times can't be replicated so the memories suffice. I loved this show too although it should NEVER be rebooted. It is a one of a kind classic that can't be replicated. Now why didn't someone understand that about Hawaii Five o or Little Women etc.?

You can see that Donna Mills shots were not filmed on the same day as those of the rest of the cast: Karen, Mack, Val and Gary were on the set on the same day and filmed their scene then Abby’s shots and reactions were edited in. Donna Mills didn’t have many scenes in the final 2 episodes although it was revealed she was behind the big plot of season 14 with Nick and the one with Paige and Greg. It works well anyway.

Karen suddenly seems intimidated by Abby. Abby says nothing when Val welcome her home, and 4 years later in Back To The Culdesac theres no sight or mention of them newly weds.

Travis Grant Thank you!!! I thought I was the only one who found it strange that they never mentioned the newlyweds at all in Back to the Cul-de-sac.

There were 8 homes in the cul de sac. In 14 years did we ever see all eight families? No we didn't. So I never thought about the newly weds who didn't have a name or any real lines in that last scene.

@@richardgarcia618 Actually, I've been to the cul-de-sac in real life. There's only 6 houses in the cul-de-sac, but the show only focused on 5 of them. The 6th one was at the end of the cul-de-sac.

They could have brought Don Murray back for the final episode. They could say the feds put him in Witness Protection. Sid could come back and say he is free and that Roy and Frank are dead and the operation he had was a set up
