These are the final seconds to "Squeezeplay", the second season finale for the 1979-93 CBS drama "Knots Landing", a spin-off of the popular 1978-91 drama "Dallas". This was the 18th and final episode of the second season (31st overall). Sadly, this episode marks the final regular appearance of original cast member Don Murray as Sid Fairgate, though he does appear in two more episodes in the next season before departing the series. Sid's death marked the first time that a lead character on a prime time television series had been killed off. This episode originally aired Thursday, March 26, 1981.
Tensions are high at Sid Fairgate's (Don Murray) car dealership Knots Landing Motors. His longtime employee Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) copped to buying stolen car parts for the firm using money he borrowed from his brother J.R. After being questioned by the FBI, Gary and Sid join up with the Feds for a sting operation. The sting is successful and the crooks are hauled off to jail. The FBI then informs Gary and Sid that they will have to testify, so they place guards with them. Meanwhile, one of the mechanics on the crooks' payroll lets out the brake fluid in Sid's car.
Rushing home to get to his sister Abby (Donna Mills), whose children were kidnapped by her bitter ex-husband Jeff, Sid and an FBI agent are driving down Pacific Coast Highway when he realizes that he has no brakes. The car goes out of control as he narrowly avoids hitting people before crashing through a freeway embankment, down to the beach below. The scene freezes on Sid's horrified face.
This plot was set to accommodate the wishes of Don Murray, who decided to leave "Knots Landing" in 1981 to focus on other projects.

This was before the show got serialized. The show basically had self contained episodes where most problems got resolved in one episode. Then came along Abby who was the only resident of the Cul de sac that wasn’t married as all the other families were had married heads in the house. The original premise had the show about the lives of four couples living on one street with each week a different story line featuring a different family. Then Abby had to first wreck Richard and Laura’s marriage before separating Val and Gary for well over a decade. This was when the story arcs really developed into lasting long time before resolutions. This was the first cliff hanger to start the whole serial stories.

Interesting juxtaposition from Sid's tense "Oh my God" to the bouncy closing theme.

The first principle character of a primetime soap to be killed. Very shocking and Knots kept Don Murray in the opening sequence of the first few episodes of the next season to keep the viewers guessing about Sid's fate.

A few years later Don Murray regretted leaving the show . When the show got real popular in the mid to late 80s don Murray said he wished he hadn't left.

@@jasonraczkowski6001 I wonder what the show would have been like if Don/Sid had stayed? So much that happened afterwards was fallout from his death.

@@Texaslawhorn yeah well there would have been no mac McKenzie That's for sure. Diana' would have stayed . Sid would have fired Gary for having an affair with abby Greg Sumner may still have happened Sid would have grown his business especially with lotus point SIDS engine would have gone public Mac McKenzie was very involved with things and investigations etc Sid was laid back Frankly the show would have been way different. In fact it may have not lasted as long. Mac McKenzie was a way better character than sid

@@jasonraczkowski6001 Good points. I don't think it would have lasted as long, but who knows. I was born in 1982 and remember my mom watching the show in the late '80s and early '90s, and so I only knew Karen and Mack. I had no idea about Sid until I watched it in reruns years later. As great a couple as Karen and Mack were I prefer Karen and Sid.

So imagine UK viewers watching this. We saw Sid go off the cliff in May 1981- but the BBC decided not to show season 3 until September 1983! Yes, we had to wait more than two years to find out what happened. The frustration pre-internet TV schedulers caused knows no limits. Short of trying to find anyone who knew someone Stateside, there was no way of finding out.

He inadvertantly got involved with Gary selling stole auto parts. They sabotaged his car because he knew too much. The reason for it was because Don Murray, the actor, wanted a bigger salary so they wrote him out of the show.

I always wondered if Sid had survived & continued on how Abby would have navigated her treacherous ways. Would she have had affairs with Richard & Gary? Would Sid have stood up for her? I guess we’ll never know. I liked Sid & Karen but Mack brought so much to character & the show itself. Good memories.
