Planning a trip to Belize? Don't miss these important travel tips before you go. My fiancé and I spent 12 days in Belize at the end of 2018. We visited San Ignacio, Placencia, and Caye Caulker. We also crossed the border to Guatemala for a quick visit to Tikal National Park. If it's your first time heading to Belize, these 23 travel tips cover some of the top things I wish I knew before we went. Already familiar with Belize? Add your own tips in the comments below.
UPDATE: I have addressed any comments relating to drones in Belize, pronouncing things wrong, and calling Belize "third-world" instead of a "developing" country, so if I don't respond to your comment about any of those things, that's why. I will continue to grow and learn from my mistakes. This is my first travel tips video, and travel film ( • 12 Days in Belize - Tr... ). I look forward to making more. Thanks for your support! More travel tips to come.

You are quite the adventurer and trip planner! I went there on a college trip with professor Billiter the Marine biology instructor at College of Southern Maryland. I went a decade ago and it was one of the best travel experiences I have had because professor B goes every year in March so his experience and connections in Belize made this trip outstanding. We went to the caves both by hike and kayak. We were there to dive the reef for our marine biology study but he planned a week of touring the ruins, rainforest, herbal forest, zoo, and even nightlife in San Pedro before heading to the lab the following week. So it takes good planning but it is worth it!

They are places called Crooked Tree Village, if you like Bird watching you can visit this place and there is also a Maya Ruin there as well. It is located approximately 33miles from Belize City on the Northern Highway and approximately 3 miles off the Highway. You can get cheaper local wine in this village without any added preservatives as you would get when you purchase it at the Duty Free Zone at the Airport. If you are planning to make a trip here in my country, you can go to this Beautiful Village and the villagers are friendly. You can stay at Bird's Eye View Lodge and they can pick you up from the airport and take you on tours within the village and ask them what all they have to offer in there package deal. Don't forget to ask about Red Neck Shop where you can get your local cashew and berries wine for US$5 for the litre, US$10 for the size we describe as elephant foot and US$15 for the gallon. The next time you visit Belize Brady Bigalke, you should talk a tour in this Beautiful village. Don't only limit your visit to only the West and part of the South in Stann Creek district. They are other places where you can visit in Toledo District such as one of the small village called Barranco where you can get huge golden plum to eat and other villages in Toledo. You can also visit Lamani, another Maya Ruin in Orange Walk. You can either reach this Ruin either by boat or by road. Don't forget to stop in downtown Orange Walk for there delicious Tacos which they are famous for doing. In Corozal, which is close to the Northern Border to cross over to Chetumal, there are places where you can visit as well. The water is Beautiful to swim. They are different Cayes where you can visit apart from Caye Caulker. There is San Pedro which starts at the top of the Coral Reef in the North to Lime Caye which is the end of the hook of the Coral Reef in the South. I enjoy my country and traveling to get to know these places.

My friend and I stayed at a small resort just minutes away from the same Chocolate & Crafts place, Iguana Conservation, the Xunantunich ruin, and a bunch of other things! We even visited caves, went snorkeling and other saw a bunch of other must-sees! Belize is soooo amazing and extremely UNDERRATED!

Tip: when taking public transportation to move from districts. Ask the local persons what’s the transportation fee, you’re supposed to be charged the same fee as the locals for public transportation but sometimes they would triple the price for u tourists. 2. Don’t eat at fancy restaurants, try the local food stops, it’s waayyy much better and u get to taste something different. 3. Pay day is the last Friday in the month and yes every other Friday.

In 1964 my friend and I spent six weeks with his uncle, Mr. Norris in Belize - British Honduras as it was known then. He had a huge estate which is now on the maps as Norland. Anyway we biked to ATM and entered around late afternoon at the wet end of the cave and we were going to go through to the high end. (We had been through once before with Mr. Norris.) Well, we got lost and our batteries went dead. We spent the night in the cave with what seemed like a million bats. When sunrise came the next morning, we could see the glow coming from the high end of the cave and we made it out and cooked breakfast. Back then no tourist went to ATM. It was only known to a very few locals and you had to hack and hike your way through the jungle to get there. As I recall we started into the jungle at the back end of a large banana plantation. In 1964 British Honduras was definitely not a tourist destination. The main highway from Belize City to San Ignacio was clay, no pavement.

Awesome review, BUT: 1) Belizean Creole is not "Jamaican" mixed with anything. It is it's own thing. It IS Belizean Creole. Syntax, grammar and accent are all different from Jamaican 2) Caye is pronounced "KEY" 3) You can buy exotic local wines anywhere in the Belize District

@@BradySkye you did a good job with the video, but you made obvious mistakes. Overall tourists generally dont care what Belizean Creole is or care to understand it. They will likely say "Kay" for Caye, and if the come across someone selling local fruit wines on the northern or old northern highway, they'll probably be afraid/uninformed/apprehensive to buy anyways. You made the best video to your demographic: young, backpacker-type, adventurous, white people from developed countries.

Belize Kriol (also Kriol or Belizean Creole) is an English-based creole language closely related to Miskito Coastal Creole, Jamaican Patois, San Andrés-Providencia Creole, Bocas del Toro Creole, Colón Creole, Rio Abajo Creole and Limón Coastal Creole. Belize Kriol is derived mainly from English. Its substrate languages are the Native American language Miskito, and the various West African and Bantu languages which were brought into the country by slaves. These include Akan, Efik, Ewe, Fula, Ga, Hausa, Igbo, Kikongo and Wolof. Decker (2005:3) proposes that the creole spoken in Belize previous to 1786 was probably more like Jamaican than the Belize Kriol of today. By the Convention of London in 1786 the British were supposed to cease all logwood cutting operations along the Caribbean coast of Central America, except for the Belize settlement. Many of the settlers from the Miskito Coast moved to Belize, bringing their Miskito Coast Creole with them. The immigrants outnumbered the Baymen five to one. The local Kriol speech shifted to become something more like the Miskito Coast Creole. Miskito Creole is nearly identical to, and hence mutually intelligible with, Belizean Creole, and retains a high degree of intelligibility with all other Central American English creoles. It is also sometimes classified as a dialect of Jamaican Patois creole but this classification has been disputed. Mískito Coast Creole or Nicaragua Creole English is an English-based creole language spoken in coastal Nicaraguan region of Mosquito Coast on the Caribbean Sea; its approximately 30,000 speakers are spread over a number of small villages. The region is today administratively separated into two autonomous regions: North Caribbean Coast and South Caribbean Coast. Mosquito is the nickname that is given to the region and earlier residents by early Europeans who visited and settled in the area. The term "Miskito" is now more commonly used to refer to both the people and the language. The Creoles of Nicaragua are said to be an Afro-Caribbean population that are mixed with Europeans, Africans and Amerindians. Their culture is influenced by West African and British roots along with Mestizos and Miskito. Some food that is used in their cooking consists of coconut oil, taro root, manioc and other elements such as wheat flour and other processed foods. They have their own musical style which can be compared to West Indian calypso. ___ Bileezhan (Bileezyan) Kriol: Wehpaat (Wehpaa/Wichpaa) Ai deh fahn da Bileez da too a dehn Bileez ahn Stan Krik Dischrik deh Belizean Creole Dictionary (Free): www.sil.org/system/files/reapdata/91/95/49/91954925699176285931841170600318709537/BelizeKriol_EngDic_49337_2009.pdf Belizean Creole Grammar (Free): www.sil.org/system/files/reapdata/20/99/21/20992139271472124394945438780794345365/The_Song_of_Kriol_UnicodeElectronic2013.pdf ___

Jamaican Patois, known locally as Patois (Patwa or Patwah) and called Jamaican Creole by linguists, is an English-based creole language with West African influences (a majority of loan words of Akan origin) spoken primarily in Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora; it is spoken by the majority of Jamaicans as a native language. Patois developed in the 17th century, when slaves from West and Central Africa were exposed to, learned and nativized the vernacular and dialectal forms of English spoken by the slaveholders: British English, Scots and Hiberno-English. Jamaican Creole exhibits a gradation between more conservative creole forms that are not significantly mutually intelligible with English, and forms virtually identical to Standard English. Jamaican Patois contains many loanwords, most of which are African in origin, primarily from Twi (a dialect of Akan). Many loanwords come from English, but are also borrowed from Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arawak and African languages as well as Scottish and Irish dialects. Significant Jamaican Patois-speaking communities exist among Jamaican expatriates in Miami, New York City, Toronto, Hartford, Washington, D.C., Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (in the Caribbean coast), also London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Nottingham. A mutually intelligible variety is found in San Andrés y Providencia Islands, Colombia, brought to the island by descendants of Jamaican Maroons (escaped slaves) in the 18th century. Mesolectal forms are similar to very basilectal Belizean Kriol. _ Jamaican Creole Grammar (Free): www.creolica.net/jcpp.pdf openaccess.leidenuniv.nl/bitstream/handle/1887/52532/Final%20Draft.pdf _

So back in 2014 I returned with my friend to San Pedro for a few days, his first time to Belize. I packed in my stuff a very large fish hook- NO BARB and long strong rope. We set out to find a golf cart guy that was willing to drive us to a quite place next to the Tarpon, payed him a six-pack of cold beer. Put on some food and tied the rope to his cart. FISH ON, HIT THE GAS and this pissed off six foot Tarpon was on shore. Take pictures and toss him back. You would never catch one on a pole next to a dock, just to big. Belize now has signs up on docks and other places not allowing this anymore. So back to 2008 in San Pedro we had the chance to feed the crocks. On our way in a golf cart taxi we stopped at a small store to buy a frozen chicken to bring along with us. When we arrived to the swampy area we were greeted by local teenagers from there local school. They had paper work to show the school all money paid. I gave the chicken to one of the boy's, the brave one. He tied the chicken on a long rope and tossed it in the water, he was standing in the water. The next thing you see is about 50 crocks were in and were going NUTS WITH EACH OTHER for this chicken, but this boy didn't let them get it. They were mad and rolling around fighting and all of a sudden cow bones surfaced when they fought. This teenager knew what he was doing, waiting for the Alfa-male to arrive. "There he is" he yelled, off about a quarter mile away was two "VERY BIG EYE BALLS COMING". So soon as this "Alfa-male arrived", all the younger crocks swam away and hid. "Mister Alfa-male said get OUT THIS IS MY CHICKEN". This teenager knew this crock very well, it was his friendly trained pet. It did what any trained pet would do, "put on a show". He tossed the chicken in, pulled it back, tossed it around and had fun with his friend. After about five minutes he let his friend have the chicken, but he didn't get pulled into the water. The crock was happy to get lunch. He then came ashore to rest and say "Hi to everyone, look how big I am", he was seventeen feet long and happy. The teenager said "Anyone want to pet him", no one was ready for that. I said "I do", and asked him "Will I live or not trying", he said "You will be fine if you do as I say". "Walk slowly on to his side, not his front side to him and pet him". So before I did this I had my friend film this on video to show my family what happend to Mikey in Belize. I walked to the side of his head, stuck out my arm, and petted his nose twice. It was very soft to the touch. The crowd of people standing around started to cheer "He's still alive", and I'm glad too.

Great information for future Belizean guests. Very informative. We own property in Belize and travel down there frequently. It took be a while to figure out that "Dirty Tree" really meant "33" ! You didn't mention the Coastal Rd. in your travels, but I think they were in the midst of actually improving the road for paving when you were there - or getting ready to start. Also mention that you pull over the right-hand side of the road to make a left turn - that is the quickest way to spot tourists ; ) Great video!

We found that the sip n dip was cheaper and is owned by a local from Caye Caulker.

One thing to know when your driving in Belize. They have speed humps. They have signs and they come up fast on you. Best slow way down when going over them. Else you’ll take out your suspension. Curiously. They always have cross walks to cemeteries. Kay caulker is fun to go to. You’ll want to make a reservation if you want to stay at a hotel.

I think the most conflicting thing about traveling to Belize is the fact that tourists/backpackers tend to believe that they need to stay in or near Belize City as if the word City means the highlights just because they come from 1st world countries.. A lot of the tourist also fail to reason with a bit of more open mindedness when it comes to traveling across/ in and around the country. Belize CIty is yes ofcourse a Crime infested zone but also its not so bad. All you simply must or need to know is.. If your going or pass through Belize district/city just don't stay there. There are some decent hotels/resort style but all you can do is stay stuck in place. That less time to actually enjoy the beauty of what most Belizeans take for granted. Another thing that Tourists need to know is Our transport service sucks in terms of Bus transport. It would be way better to just go via private vehicles meaning rental. SO much worth even at the cost of$$$ I've seen so many tourist come back packing or traveling through and struggle just because the bus is jam packed...3rd world issues. Everyone is trying to make an extra buck from small fries to the Big fish. But if you wanna take the long and hard approad ..Pay for your entire seat..which might cost extra..hence the reason get a private rented vehicle. Cororzal/Orange walk to the north are pretty calm ..not much for crime and usually friendly. Western district (cayo) where san ignacio that was mention is is pretty peaceful. Down south is way chill. Islands are ok but can be a hub for crime also. But of course its a highly sought for location because of the beautiful sceneries. All in all stop and ask the Belizean people for directions. This isnt a huge country. You really dont need maps or even use of google maps. Had to help a french couple right out of the bus and direct them/lead them to their hotel. Funny part they realize it was less than a 5-10 min walk.. If you're traveling to Bz. Expect lots of spanish up noth..and in the west side of the country or near its borders. Majority of the spanish speakers know English though some are stubborn haha. English is of course the main language. The Broken English is creole... each caribbean country has their own form so dont go confusing or comparing though it sounds the same. Its sort of like when someone says ur from jamaica but ur from guyana and thats a little insulting. Biggest advice in country is making a local friend who could show you the best of the local dishes or night life or even direct you where to go or keep you from unwanted troubles. You never know you enjoy an even more fun filled experienced compared to the normal travelig aspect of only beaches and island life. OH Try not to just be a tourist haha...learn to be a local. You may be a tourist but you'll be less of walking attention magnet. Over all though everyone is pretty much friendly. Like he mentioned net services here are way not what you would believe to find. 2-4 mb DL speed type of net.. Its more complemental than anything. Try not overly going out as if you're the richest individuals and dont go giving the kids money just because they seem poort. Loads of them down south tend to do that and next thing you see haha their parents give them a good spanking for being naughty but dont tolerated it. You're just asking for trouble. Partying/clubbing be it in land or island.. becareful who you party or know in terms of random tour guides or even djs etc just because you want to be in the crowd. Just play it safe and im sure you will find genuine people. Last but not least.... window shop before you purchase stuff....Belizeans believe in Catch and kill meaning prices may be higher than usual and try to gain more out of you that they should. Just use your best judgement. Ive been to areas in cayo where tourists go and as a belizean ugh the suffering you take for buying a nice hand made bag for a friend of mine was like almost 150... vs one i saw in the local market or stores for like 40 bucks with same or better quality. Even though i had to bug the sales girl until she dropped the price realizing im from her country lol.

How are taxis?
@wolfygongora4002
@wolfygongora4002 5 жыл бұрын
@@theyoungerson2387 Honestly Taxi cabs.....uh if thats what you're getting at, Um Each district prices vary- depending if its in town or by district some would offer but thats pricy. In town 5-10 $ belize. From the Airport the more uh professional in some aspect would offer out of district or to your resort may charge from 75-150 or more Bz Um my advice would be rent your own ride or if you do take cabs. Make sure you check to see if they seem legit. There are no big companies ..just mini associative groups of cab drivers. If you're just tryna get from point A-B uh i guess its ok. During day time shouldnt be a prob. At night if u already have a decent driver u got to know then sure but um um you dont want to just go with anyone. But depending on district most of the taxi guys here are okay enough to trust. Belize is a small country honestly And in Orange walk where im from ... you can basically walk around to most of the spots worth even going to. Most hotels are near the center...restuarants and banks are in the center. Corozal most of the parts word are central ...same in san ignacio. Usually if im not mistaken if ur coming to a resort they offer you to pick you up etc. And im sure they got their own white listed people who you can get taxi services. If you're coming on your own random adventures and tryna blend in learn to walk...Use taxi's sparsely unless you meet a decent trust worthy one you'd like to support. They'd probably treat you right and take you where you need on a timely fashion kind of like having your own guide . Hope that helps.
