03:03 - Step #1: The “Stick Toss”
07:31 - Step #2: The “Carmine Appice Grip”
11:31 - Step #3: The “12 O’clock Bounce”
17:38 - But when it comes down to it, THIS is all that matters:
In order to confidently progress on the drums, you really need to know that you’re doing things right. This is especially crucial with grip.
Unfortunately, because many drummers are learning online, they don’t have access to direct feedback on their playing. This leads to a lot of uncertainty and fear of building bad habits.
But not to worry, because today I’m teaching you 3 ways to test your grip. If your grip passes these 3 tests, you’re good to go. YOU CAN DO THIS!
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

i was in a ton of pain learning the push pull technique and had to stop playing for a bit. had a hunch my technique was wrong so i watched a bunch of videos trying to figure out what i was doing wrong, and none of them were really helpful. this video was absolutely transformative for me. really appreciate how in depth you go about how it’s supposed to feel. i hadn’t even realized how completely wrong my grip was and that it was also causing me to play really tense. i play so much more relaxed, confident, and faster now, with no pain. thank you!

Really like your teaching style. Used to play in HS and stopped in my 20's, and your videos have been a huge help for me to correct bad habits that I've formed in my younger years. Nearly 20 years later I'm picking the stick back up since I have the time to sit down and analyze what I'm doing to hopefully correct them. Thank you for all you're doing. One request I have if possible, it would be really helpful to get videos in slow motion of your hands to see the stick position and fulcrum of you playing rolls, doubles, moving across the toms and different playing volumes.

I'm really really glad you covered this, I've always felt more comfortable using my index finger for my fulcrum and thought that was a bad habit I had developed. Keep up the great work!

Awesome video explanation, returning drummer from 10 years stop, just move my fulcrum point to the middle finger and I get much better rebound, thank you for the tip wish my teacherS thought me that back in the days.

This helped me realize that my grip fulcrum was pretty inconsistent, stiff, and rooted in my index finger knuckle. I am going to work on switching to the middle finger. Thanks for the tests!

My two biggest challenges with my grip are that my stronger (right hand) is way ahead of my weaker left hand in terms of being able to maintain a fulcrum that holds on to the stick while still being loose, so I get much better rebound with my strong hand (no surprise). The other issue is that step 3 is the hardest one for me in that I can get a good stick throw even with my weak hand when I'm not trying to hit the practice pad, but my bottom three fingers that aren't part of the fulcrum are in the way when trying to get the maximum amount of rebound and it's slow going training them to stay on the stick without them getting in the way of the rebound. Especially with the weak hand.

Wow, I love how detailed your descriptions are. I need just this kind of instruction to understand the mechanics. I'm practising, and my kit hasn't even arrived yet. I'm starting this journey at 62, so I hope I have enough time left to get to a decent level of skill! Ha ha. Always wanted to play kit, so I just decided to go for it. Wish me luck and thanks for your excellent instruction.

Thanks for the vid. My issues is the fingers on my left hand (weak side) seem to not engage as actively as more right hand. I been focusing more exercises slowly using my weaker hand, but would you recommend playing with heavier sticks while practicing to engage better finger technique? Thanks

Does anyone have an issue of one stick (in my left) hitting the wrist with the butt of the stick? It doesn't happen on the right hand (my dominant hand) so I assume it's to do with less control on the left hand, but is there a way to stop it as stops the rebound, particularly on double rolls? Oddly it doesn't seem to happen as much on paradiddles and I can do those a little faster than doubles.

I can't believe how 'lively' your Aquarian pad is. My recently purchased one is DEAD. They now include a 'snare patch' to give it more bounce, so I wonder if it's a lot different now.

I really like your videos. Many thanks for the great editing and content. Just a feedback if I may: sometimes you re loosing the essential of the messages you re trying to convey. In this video for instance, you lost me several times because while explaing A, you re talking about B which requires to explain C...etc. Apart of that, really great job and your channel is one of the best on drums online courses. Greetings from Belgium 🥁 PS: passed the 3 tests 😁
