Thank you so much for this video, very informative. My Dad had a direct cremation and we bought his urn on amazon for $20 the fee from the funeral home for the direct cremation which included the death certificates, permits, transport etc came out to $1200. We had a memorial service at our church and the flowers were bought by my cousin and she told me she got a good deal from Costco for the flowers. The pamphlets that had his info and picture I made and had them printed out at Office Depot for about $30. My nieces and nephews made a beautiful collage with the photos we had. In total, everything came out to about $1260. It was an affordable but dignified and beautiful memorial and we were able to focus the time we had with him being together with our friends and family. We were not worried about finances, in fact my Dad had had paid for the direct cremation fee 2 years before he died. We were able to mourn our loss without having that added burden of how our we going to pay for this funeral

These are the subjects that are so relevant. A percentage of the public isn't aware of decent funeral directors, such as you are Kari (because the media focuses on the crooked businesses). Thank You... thank you.. as always. You are a blessing.

Kari, as always, thank you for delivering important information in a caring manner. It's nice to know what rights you have upfront. I hope to take care of my final disposition details in advance, to make it easier on the family. I love watching your channel as well as Caitlin Doughty 's channel, because you two are knowledgeable and very compassionate. Making sure that people have many options available, and they won't be judged by the choices that they ultimately make. I think it is important to have this information beforehand, as it is much easier, your mind is hopefully clearer, and less emotional. It's never easy dealing with death, especially, if it's unexpected. So, having this beforehand, to me, is invaluable! Kudos as always !

Thank you so much for being up front about all the rights. I have had a couple bad experiences with the same funeral home. I expected better because my father worked for one of our cut cemeteries for 22 years so he saw these directors every day. I have never heard you touch on what happens to everything left with or on the body after you finish signing all the paperwork and/or cremation. If you speak on this subject I will then write down my experience.

I can provide an answer if that will help. I have worked in a mortuary for 38 years and I am licensed as a funeral director, embalmer, and crematory manager. At the time a person is removed from the place of death to the mortuary a written inventory of all personal property and items is taken. During the arrangement meeting the funeral director will check the legal next of kin to determine what items are returned to the family, what stays with the decedent, and what is disposed of. It is not uncommon for certain jewelry to stay on and certain clothing to be worn, whereas other items are returned. Right before the casket is closed for the final time and especially before a cremation takes place it is not uncommon for the director to check a second time to verify what items stay and what items are returned.

Kari, even equipped with all the information. At the time of need. Most or simply to overcome with grief. That's where the Trust in a familiar funeral home comes in. Word of mouth in a small town can make or break a Business. We are Blessed to have many trust worthy funeral homes in my town and surrounding areas. Most funeral directors in my town, were friends with the people they help. But you hear from time to time of shady funeral homes around. They do shade the good ones with trust issues or doubts. I remember my grandfather telling me about seeing my aunt after she was killed and saying he'd never forget it now that I work part time in a funeral home and working in a care facility I understand both sides of viewing its important to think what are you looking for or need

Good video on explaining consumer rights, reasonable explanations for services, and legitimate concerns on the part of F-S Professionals. Where I live in the Northeast, we seldom see wakes/visitations held within a decedent's home. I can only recall being at two, ever. They were part of a large Italian family where old traditions died hard. Both were something out of a Francis Ford Coppola film, surreal yet very loving. Keep up the excellent work!

You are so helpful. I have come across some of the things that you were staring in this video. It was interesting. When I helped a friend whose husband died and she got Covid so I did some running around for her and was surprised at some of the things that she got changed for. I’m glad I was there for her as she was in no state of mind to do some of the things that were necessary .

So many small towns either have A, B, or C..Heaven forbid we dare offend, despite that being my our relative.... Ive seen the small town family funeral "recommend". Now I know there are choices. Thank you... again you have answered many questions and concerns. Would you be willing to do a video or make a list available of things people need to have our consider having for a funeral, etc. I know a person who compared it to a wedding with similar items...Clothing, food for guests, flowers, casket/ urn bearers, readings, music,etc. So many things to think about that we don't realize all that it takes.

Hi Kari, going through your videos I have yet to hear you address 2 topics. 1) Are there laws that stipulate the disposition of cremains? I know of persons who have had their ashes scattered in forests, rivers, lakes and in one instance the family garden. A pastor friend goes to great lengths telling his congregation all of these are illegal in MI. What is the truth? 2) If your relative is active duty military killed in battle can the accompanying military officer deny the family the right to inspect/view the body? There was recently a case of this in the news.

Nice job. Thanks for the information. I go pass spring grove cemetery and they have a funeral home on the property so I can talk to the funeral director and rearrange. And once paid for is that the set price If you live on your own property can you buy law bury your love ones on your property.

I have a question about a loved one’s ashes. A friend of mine decided to move out of state after her husband died. He had been cremated. I’m not sure how the subject came up or whatever, but she was told in order to take his ashes she would have to get a special permit, that cost a bundle, to take him with her. If she didn’t she would have to have a transport service take them. Have you ever heard of a law like this? I’ve never heard of it before then. I’m afraid it was the funeral home taking advantage. It was that business who told her of the law and helped her out by getting the permit for her. And taking the money for the permit. We were all quite confused. But she did it because she had to move.

Hopefully most families do understand that you do provide services that need to be paid for and they will find a funeral home willing to work with them as long as they are honest upfront ....I helped a friend's family ...made a couple payments toward a small balance on the funeral....the director was great.... So people..just be honest and tell the director what you have to work with upfront ! they will help you if they can....thanks

My mom mentioned wanting us to dig up my cremated step father, creating her, placing both of them in a marble vase she has in her living room & burying them together where he is now (and they're both on the tombstone so I presume they have 2 spots already). We live in west Michigan and this is at Holy Cross & Arsoluwicz - is this something that would be allowed or possible?

I have been doing my research when it comes to my on death some day. I don't want my family to be in the dark about their rights. I plan to be cremated. I don't want a fancy casket or urn. I got a number of price list and I checked out the business demeanor. If they don't feel right to me they're not for my family. My family don't need added stress. Can anyone view a person just because they feel like they need to? We lost my aunt in August last year and there was no public viewing my brothers and dad and I along with her son got to view her before she was buried but if my sister in law or anyone just felt like they needed to see her one last time could they have just gone to see her or does it have to be immediate family only?

I adore how open you are. I asked you a couple questions before. Here's another. Ethics....I don't think it's ethical for a Funeral Home Director, lives directly next door to my parents...mom died...he is the Funeral Home Director in charge of my mom's burial etc. He is not being open with me....closing me out...sister is manipulating everyone so not to have any knowledge/control of what's being done. F.Home Director not being open. Won't give me any general information. Doesn't sound right????

I asked for a list of services provided thus far and a cost list. He was cutting me off before I even finished asking the question, He eventually said Lynn was in charge ...(my sister)..I should say...I first called to request a copy of all information, signed or otherwise regarding my mothers funeral arrangements. He said he didn't know what I was talking about. Of course he did. This Was Wed. and her Viewing ended up being the upcoming Friday. Eventually, he ended up saying he had nothing in writing stating my sis was in charge, my father supposedly told him and that was good enough for him. Dad Found out about mom on Tuesday as well, in the afternoon. Funeral Home was closed. Dad is not cognitively able to think that clearly and have clear sense of time to ask that of him. He had no documentation that said my sis was to be in charge. I don't fight that at all. Just want oversight on The Funeral Home. I don't like not having access to documents when I don't believe there are legit reasons.

I love how honest you are! What state do you practice in? The only thing different in NY than what you mentioned is about the death certificate. Families do need to use a funeral home to an extent in NY because a funeral director with their license number needs to sign the certificate along with a medical doctor and registrar.

Most NewYorkers are under the assumption that there required to follow the status quo. They don’t know about home visitations there under the assumption they must have everything in a funeral home. Same thing with a death certificate if by chance they wanted to have a “Green funeral”which are more upstate. Not everything is filled out and if the deceased was married the widow must show the marriage certificate. And the doctor who signs the death certificate doesn’t have to be the ER doctor if the deceased died in the emergency room. It can be there own private doctor. Who may sugar coat the cause of death like in my fathers case. He used a fancy term for high blood pressure and he lied about my fathers smoking there was no autopsy even though one was requested. Instead of saying it was declined it was left out. It’s likely that was done because of insurance reasons. Death certificates can cost any where from $10 to $25. New York is a rip off depending on the place you choose it could be $10 thousand and up.

I feel my mom was ripped off when my dad died. He commited suicide and he wanted to be cremated. They embalmed him, not really a reason to.. He didn't look right either, he looked like he had a beer belly, but he didn't when he was alive. Then they put him on a stainless steel table with no blanket or pillow on or under him, which i found weird..it was uncomfortable for me to see him like that, and i was 16. And it looked like he was smiling/smirking and the director said that he died with a smile thats why. But I don't think hed have a smile, he was dead

What are the rules in regard to a funeral home telling you that you have to pay for the American flag being put on the casket when the deceased has been in the military is this true? My mother-in-law‘s 95 she purchased plan for cremation and burial 25 years ago in California now she’s living with us in Las Vegas , how would I do this ? do I take her policy To a nearby funeral home and see if they will honor it , or do I contact the original funeral home where the pre-Plans were paid and arranged . because she still will be buried in California with her husband. Pick up the body where it may be at Hospital or home and have them do cremation . Then we can take her ashes back to the original funeral home /Memorial park in California and have them placed Her ashes in the grave with her husband.

Kari Northey good morning:) yes it is and quite a few have passed on already....Italian/ Irish...moms side and dads had big families...oldest aunt 103....oldest cousin 83....the majority use the same funeral home and with a lot of trends changing nice to have honest information ...also a lot of us are using pre planning along with different inputs from each other as to what would make more meaningful celebrations of life....shame is I only see a lot of them at funerals now.....thanks)

Is it possible to rent a casket? I read somewhere that funeral homes don’t bring it up but you are entitled to rent a casket. So is this true?

Yes. We rented a casket for a viewing and found out later we were charged three times the value of the casket. You can buy caskets online or at Walmart, Costco, for about 75 percent off compared to funeral homes. Save thousands

Do i have the right to have any personal items or the box with my cats cremains interred or buried with me? I have been told no on my pets cremains being placed with me either in a casket or interred in an urn with mine.

I live in Texas but want to be buried in Massachusetts. My understanding is that embalming isn't necessary or a casket to transport my body back if my body is in a Ziegler case and that I can be buried directly in the Ziegler case. Do I have the right to insist they use a Ziegler case for me?

I have thank you, I want to be there for people better than the creep who was at my fathers funeral. He was awful and he still has a job. I think friendly caring people need to have that job. Thanks for the videos

Thank you for this very informative video. I do have a question. We are both to be cremated after death. Can we choose to have Crematory dispose of ashes? Would they charge more if they do? Thank you!

Some will not because of the legal backlash. You may find a place that does a scattering service though.

Could you explain how much a simple/standard cremation should be? I know the funeral home has to retrieve the body, cremate the body, and place it in the urn that my family will provide. The service, urn purchase and internment into a columbarium would be handled separately. I really just want to make sure I’m prepared. I also want to ensure my family isn’t taken advantage of. Kari Northey thank you! Yes this is a large funeral home with an in house crematorium. They have been around 100 years or more (now owned by Dignity). Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. God bless you for all that you do! 🙏🏼

Question for you: you say you freelance as a funeral director, how do you know how that funeral home operates, or how they do business? Also, do you mostly work in small funeral homes? Eric

Kari Northey OK forgive me how does this work like I said I live in a small community we have two staple funeral homes that are getting 99.9% of the business so no one else is even going to remotely start up shop on Main the one funeral home does probably 15 to 18 services a week and the other one glass but my question to you is is how does that work you just come in so they don’t have to be there what’s the advantage if that makes sense and number two what is a trade embalmers

I wonder how much does an average funeral cost tho? I know it may vary depending on the funeral home, but I been hearing funerals can cost over 70,000 dollars

Mike Crews hi...my brothers was full traditional with ground burial...$9500.00 ...you can go well under that depending on your preferences....

My mom passed in 2012 it cost $12,000. She had a place to be burried so that was taken care of my son passed in 2014 it cost $15,900 we had to purchase a plot to bury him. I'm in Ga. The furnal home we deal with has burried our families since the 1940's he gave us a discount final cost for my son was $15,000.
