oh my god somebody finally said it about the jane birkin bag keychains. youre supposed to decorate your bag and make it more personal slowly and not in the fast fashion way. youre supposed to love your bag so much to use it often enough to hang random keychains you find through time and life. not just buying something spare of personality and adding it on!! it doesn’t make sense without the emotional attachment

I recently had to explain chronically online fashion vs intentional maximalism to a friend. Like everyone should dress how they want but some things I see and I'm just "yeah that;s a very online outfit." Also the Jane Brikinfying thing, I think a lot of people want instant "style" rather than cultivating your persona through dress that actually reflects you, which is how you get people just buying amazon hauls of stuff to slap on bags rather than being intentional.

Are you wearing the outfit or is the outfit wearing you? If it looks authentic and genuine, you can get away with almost anything

a combination of getting older, being online too much, and having fashion knowledge has meant that lately I don't even really know what I like anymore and who/what I want to be/look like not to mention that nothing is made of quality anymore and I don't want to over consume so every purchase feels like it has to be THE purchase

i recently went to lake como and i must say it was maybe the first time in my life seeing so many pinterest-curated outfits together in one place and it made me feel SO sad, everybody looked exactly the same, 90% of people looked uncomfortable in the clothes they we wearing and it just looked like they'd all seen the same pinterest inspo pictured and ransacked zara and adidas in preparation for the trip. it made reflect on my own wardrobe, my own relationship to clothes and realize i actually dont like the way a lot of the things i see on pinterest look like irl, im just brainwashed

I personally don't use Pinterest because I feel like the confirmation bias of the algorithm over there keeps me from coming up with things on my own

I have proof that dressing up athletic pants is fashionable, and here's why. I did this over 15 years ago in my rural village in Germany. I was wearing my oversized men's adidas joggers and was supposed to meet my parents at a village festival. I threw over a black blazer with shoulder pads because it was a bit cold, and I thought to myself: woahh! that looks kinda cool! like the juxtaposition was interesting and gave me this feeling of unintentionally effortless. Back then, there was no instagram or pinterest or tiktok, and I still thought it looked cool. So that's my proof that it has always been cool! 😀

For me the blouse + athletic shorts + ballet flat combo really reminds me of secondary school and like dressing half in your uniform and half in your athletic clothes after school. To me it’s very much a private school aesthetic and related to the “old money” aesthetic.

I’m definitely more into styling than being seen as “fashionable”. I can’t stand weird outfits on people who simply wear them because it’s weird and they want to be perceived as being fashionable. It shows no personality or curation. It comes across as trying too hard to seem different. Not saying I’m not into weird pieces, but being able to style weird things in an everyday setting is way more impressive to me, but that’s of course just my opinion.

I think the Jane birkenfying is interesting since we have seen this in history before. People decorating their bags with buttons, their laptops with stickers, their rooms with posters, their cars with magnets, etc. The difference now is that people are taking the “personalization” aspect of Jane Birkenfying without being “personal”. There’s no authenticity when it comes to decorating. That’s why you see people with the same charms on their bags or necklaces. It’s not interesting or fashionable when everyone is rocking the exact same charms on their bags. It’s just people building personality off of each other instead of building their own personality, style, and identity.

Never thought adding keychains to bags was a nod to birkin bags. I thought it was Asian fashion influence seeping into western culture. When I studied abroad in Korea (many years ago) this was common practice along with over the top phone accessories which is also popular here in the US now.

I feel like women wearing basketball shorts & dressing them up is simply radical. Choosing comfort over style or rather choosing comfort and making it stylish.

When I see an outfit online that is considered trendy and fashionable, I like to imagine the person wearing their outfit where I live and I ask myself “would she look completely insane if I saw her walking down the street in my city wearing that?” While it’s good and fun to experiment with fashion and wear whatever you want, there is something to be said about just how much the internet is making us believe that crazy trends are supposed to be fashionable. Yeah, a girl wearing sporty shorts with kitten heels looks cute on Instagram, but how does she look walking down a middle class average town? 😂 There is a very fine line between unapologetically wearing what is truly your style vs wearing crazy impractical stuff just because you saw others do it on the internet. “Fashion victim” is a term that comes to mind and I think we are seeing a lot more of it due to the internet and too many changing trends.

I read them nonstop growing up (rip nylon) and there were always outfits that didn’t make sense and when I would try to (badly) emulate them everyone in my life would be like what are you wearing??

I think being people are more focused on being fashionable than they are on being stylish and building personal style. And I do sort of mean that in the way of the definition of fashion - as that being “in fashion” historically meant trendy. I just turned 35 so my personal style is probably more set than folks in their 20s but it gets better the more offline I am because I make choices that make sense for me instead of based on what the internet thinks is cool.

The Birkin came out at the end of a massive multi-year trend of decorating handbags with keyrings and other ornaments, that spanned the late seventies to early eighties. The bag that was most often decorated that way was called a buckle bag. You should be able to find photos of some examples if you search for buckle bag 80s. We've been here before...45 years ago.

I think a big part of avoiding empty and trend chasing outfits is wearing things that reflect your personal interests, even if it’s the most random thing, if you buy things that are really specific to you and what you like it will end up being way more unique and something you treasure long term. I think it comes off more chronically online when it’s clearly just like a costume with none of the individual’s personality.

I’ve definitely done these trends without realizing they’re trends because it was a genuine processing of my love of different variations of myself, a varied schedule, and maximizing how I feel & the transition between activities. So for me in that moment it was fun- and I felt fashionable- and I wasn’t wearing those fits when I wanted others to think I looked cute- it’s genuinely fun and for me.

I honestly think this subject in general can vary a lot between places, like I'm Italian and I live in an Island thats pretty cut off from the rest of the world, so even if we look at Pinterest outfits all the time it's never gonna be a weird "What the heck did I put on" kinda fit, it's always gonna be tailored to the culture I'm in and where I live. Sometimes I match an easy pair of mary janes with socks and people look at me like I'm crazy, so I think what we consider the "everyday person" changes a lot depending on where we live. I totally get it - there's outfits that are pinterest trendy but to the untrained eye they're just crazy. I'm not about that but there can be exceptions - like, I think a ballerina could look chic and elegant with adidas trackpants, you know the long and flowy ones, or with a pair of baggy jeans, if the lines are still elegant. If that makes sense. Edit: I actually saw versions of athletic shorts and button downs or fancy tops a few years ago on the streets of New York, maybe that's where the trend originated. NY was also where people actually wore those Converse with the chunky trekking sole. They're not my thing but I love when places still have their own vibe and not every trend stems from social media.

I don’t think knowing fashion makes you less fashionable. In fact, I would argue that my relationship with fashion became far more intentional once I studied designer fashion. There, I began to appreciate the time, effort, creativity, and labor that went into making some of my favorite pieces. It was no longer a matter of sustainability in the superficial sense, but more so, how can I look inward to really understand my personal style? And you can only understand why a piece of clothing is so important once you understand its back story. Like, what is the designer trying to communicate? Are they simply copying from other lesser known/well-established brands to hop on XYZ trend or are they trying to tell a story? And the problem with Pinterest is that it is really focused on aesthetic and self-expression rather than storytelling from within. Just because something is cute doesn’t mean you should own it. That's how corporations want you to feel so you can spend a bunch of money on clothes that ultimately say nothing about who you are.

the brown and black thing reminds me of when I was in highschool and I loved dressing up (not in a chronically online way since social media wasn't a thing how it is now) and one of my friends who didnt seem to care about clothes told me youre not supposed to wear navy and black. like what?? YES this needed to be said! If you have to be online and see a lot of “fashionable” people do a trend in order to KNOW it’s cute or fashionable, it’s not!!! Actual good fashion and style is like when you’re at a museum seeing art thinking “why is that important” or “I could have done that” and then seeing a piece that makes you think “THAT is art.” It makes you feel something, it has a je ne sais quoi that these Pinterest outfits don’t. Also, the adidas track shorts and a blazer or a “going out top” don’t have much variation, they don’t pull from an expansive cohesive style. They are a copy and paste that shows it’s a very specific trend.

I think the term you’re looking for in this video is “fashion victim”. I see a lot of fashion victims on social media and I think they conflate experimenting with fashion with just wearing every single trend in one outfit. Having a sense of personal style is completely lost when you try to wear things just for the sake of being trendy.

I support all this crazy experimentation and wrong XYZ theories (as long as it doesn't lead to dramatical overconsumption), even though I'm the complete opposite of it and will alway try to choose the "correct" thing every time 😅

as someone who went to fashion school and is now trying to weave my own way into the broader industry but has been somewhat outside it, online fashion can be really cool but also makes me sad sometimes. I am not immune to the influence of the net by any means, but I find that taking inspiration from a wide swath of sources like older films, art and fashion history, the legacies of old design houses, the innovations of young designers etc has been far more rewarding and has helped me keep perspective on what is style. I’m not saying I dress timelessly by any means but it’s way more fun to me to incorporate influences from all sorts of eras into my style in ways that feel personal and expressive. I have for example been really influenced by Rococco, coquette, 60’s space age, New Wave and Mod aesthetics, 90s/2000s Japanese movies, 80s goth, postmodern sleek casual, horror protagonist girl next door style, and glam rock, Giallo cinema, Early 2010’s pop/rocker fashion, 1920s glamor, and a myriad of contemporary and ancient influences as well. The way I dress moves through all these influences organically but can also be somewhat over the top for many but I love it. Some media that has really inspired my style lately would be : Ritual (2000) Cleo from 5 to 7 Fallen Angels Marie Antoinette Orlando Stop! Hibari Kun! Letter From an Unknown Woman In the Mood For Love Suspiria Pose A Tale of Two Sisters Hausu Pretty Woman Last Night in Soho Batman Returns Climax Flashdance Tenebrae Sid and Nancy Blade Runner Clueless Bones and All The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Christiane F The Doom Generation Apologies for so many of these being horror oriented (it’s my favorite genre) but definitely check some of these out if you haven’t seen them! I mix outfit "vibes" for example a dress with sneakers (feminine and masculine (in the traditional sense)) intentionally and have been doing so for a very long time because I see it as representing the different aspects of my personality that is very specific to me. For me it's about expressing myself in a way that I see myself- I don't think I complete relate to a feminine vibe or a masculine/athletic vibe or a gorp core vibe or a city chic vibe, I feel like I kind of fit 25% into each of those categories and so I tend to combine elements to showcase that. I wouldn't necessarily just mix any two outfit vibes for example preppy and masculine JUST because people like having contrasting elements in their outfits because it's trendy. But I do totally agree that practicality and function are core aspects of street style fashion. I think couture gets to be impractical and avant garde because practicality isn't a requirement, creativity and ideas/ concepts are. Couture gets to be impractical so that when it funnels down to the high street people can choose the elements of a couture season that they like and incorporate it into their wardrobe. But I think the unique opportunity that we have as everyday girls doing fashion is that we get to combine function with art in the way that we dress.

This may be random but, I think kids and babies are the most fashionable. I have two little sisters at home and I get all my inspiration from them. This could be a fun video idea! Looking at photos of you or your family as babies and just recreating the outfits or styling it your way. Or even creating outfits for baby and then creating outfits that match in a cute subtle way. Great video but I have to disagree about heels with casual clothes/athleisure. I always thought it was really cool. I remember Zendaya wore a red adidas track suit, a trenchcoat and white stilettos to fashion week some time and it looked so good. Also I think the sport shorts + feminine blouse combo sounds good in theory but doesn't work in reality. I just can't get into it. It looks much better if you wear distressed dark jeans with those "coquette" blouses.

the nice thing about being 40 is that i remember doing all those things in the 2000 with slight changes. the wrong shoe, over accessorizing my bag. it always comes back in some way shape or form. today there is a shift cause the level of mixing genre is higher but sometimes i see these things that for me are old fashion and ask my self: this is fashionable now? ok wow.

Listen, I want to wear what the old men in my life wear and that is a sweater and sweatpants/track pants and loafers like cmon yanno that exists outside of the Pinterest eclectic grandpa thing

The best outfits are outfits which photograph well but also look real and lived in when you see them in person. The Pinterest brain rot outfits tend to look too picture ready and therefore it doesn’t sit comfortably with that particular person. It’s uncanny bc you can tell that people who wear chronically online outfits dress for others and not for themselves! And fashion is all about personal expression.

I want to update my wardrobe every once in a while, but I want less pieces and all of them being good quality which is usually more expensive. And it’s not just the price, I don’t want to overconsume and have an enormous closet. I want to buy things that feel like me and that I will love and want to wear for a long time, but pinterest and the internet in general has made it harder for me to differentiate what is actually my style and what I’ve just seen enough times to start liking. So in the end everything that I consider to buy becomes this big purchasing decision and I never buy anything for myself and just keep wearing things I bought during hs and college. But these clothes in majority do not represent what it feels to be my personal style and do not make me feel as confident and as seen as I want to. I hope it makes sense. Idk I hate it here

You hit on something here about people and fast fashion businesses just catering to and 'consuming' trendy styles in a cookie cutter way without thinking about it. I would make a case for the heels with casual clothes.. this was something Pat Field did with Carrie Bradshaw’s character in SATC allllll the time and she looked, imo, undeniably chic because she had a point of view. If that’s not already your style though, I feel like it’s going to feel very uncomfortable.

I think the brown and black, and even dark blue and black, being a fashion faux pas come from formal wear for men. You are not supposed to mix those colours in suits, like blue pants with black jacket or accessories, like black belt with black shoes. But people don't wear formal wear most of the time, so it's fine to wear black with brown and blue. Also they look good anyway. I disagree with ~"if a piece of clothing was never worn that way before in history then it's not fashionable". T-shirts used to be only underwear and now they're mostly outerwear. Same with slip dresses. Fashion is always evolving and many different things that were considered inappropriate and a fashion faux pas can become fashionable and normal.

omg i thought i was the only being a b-i-t-c-h about 'jane birkinifying' bags bc i also thought that it's more of a sentiment and personal thing than a trend. i'm a fan of kpop and have been to plenty of concerts over the years and one of my favorite things is people dressing up and for YEARS kpop fans have been putting as many keychains on their purses and clear bags at concerts (and just in general) whether that keychain or charm be a picture of their favroite member or an animal plushie that reminds them of their favorite artist and each and every bag at a 10,000 person concert looked different and it was so special bc each thingamabob they attached onto there had meaning and now people are just buying shit off amazon bc it's what the trend is aksrHGFKHFKSUhrkfjhu

in defense of the athletic shorts, I just wear them because theyre super comfy and breezy, but they also (at least the ones I own) still have the silhouette of a normal short (flat bottom hem), as opposed to the side cuts and divots that say running shorts have. And they add a pop of color! I typically wear it with tshirts and tanks, but it is fun to dress it up with a more feminine top for a bit of juxtaposition and to just feel more feminine and put together while staying comfy. So at least in my case, it makes sense like sneakers and dresses do.

Turns out I'm not as chronically online as I thought I was because a month or two ago I went "why the heck am I not putting a bunch of cute keychains and dangly things on my bag?? this would totally be a trend!" so I spent like two weeks looking for the perfect Kirby plushie, since I love Kirby but don't really wear pink it seemed like a good way to incorporate. Then in helping my bro-in-law clean out his room he was tossing out a keychain of Portal 2 Wheatley so I stuck that on there. I've got a denim jacket with a ton of pins on it but since it's warm weather now, I moved some of the pins to the bag... TURNS OUT IT'S TOTALLY A TREND. Actually, I'm sure that I was subliminally influenced to do it, but I just didn't realize I had even been seeing it. ANYWAY great video topic, really interesting. The best advice I've heard about participating in trends in a way that won't make you look back in a few years and go "wtf was I thinking??", or at least not so severely think that, is: If you want to try a trendy item, make sure it's only trendy in 1 way. Example being: metallic color sambas with ribbons instead of laces. That's throwing it all in a blender and might feel cool for a hot second, but will quickly lose it's charm. Remember neon cropped puffer jackets from however many seasons ago? Too many trends on one piece, and probably they sat in the back of people's closets last winter. But if it's classic, timeless, or simple overall but incorporates a trend in one area - trying desperately to think of something but I can't, uh, so oh well.

The title of the video has me scratching my head. I think it would help if you defined "fashion" and "fashionable." I was thinking, so...are you saying that being trendy makes you less fashionable? Not quite? Trendy looks are not timeless? Closer. Rule-breaking looks are...interesting because they break the rules? Yes. Are rule-breaking looks trendy? Yes. Are rule-breaking looks fashionable? Only time will tell. These looks that you're showing are very "model in NYC rolled out of bed and threw on whatever was next to her on the floor." But it's cute because the person is young and thin and attractive. It's kind of like "look at me, I can wear whatever I want and look cute." The question is how does this translate for the rest of us, or can it? I'm not that thin and I am def not young--if I wore this kind of fit it would frankly be a disaster.

Gotta disagree with the wrong shoe theory one re dressier shoes with athletic clothing and I’m kinda surprised you don’t see where the influence stems from having been a dancer. There have been iterations of it in the various “dance core” looks that have surfaced sinced the 80’s. I remember times when we girls would wear ballet flats or deck shoes or moccasins with our adidas shorts. But, I will say, it was low key. We weren’t pairing them with blouses or frilly tops. It would be like a white t and pretty low key ballet flats. But, also, it wasn’t the norm for us to have a lot of shoes back then. We didn’t have a lot of choices when trying to do something different lol. The first image that came to mind when you touched on that one was like early 2000’s madonna in adidas shorts with black fishnet stockings and heeled boots. She had a concert look back in the 90’s that was biker shorts with socks and loafers. Which made me think of the classic short adidas short with leg warmers and heels look in the 80’s. I don’t think it’s the “wrong shoe” with this trend as much as it is the wrong shoe AND the wrong top. Although, I remember polo shirts with short gym shorts, socks, and deck shoes being a look ….. The addition of the wrong top makes me think of the Dad sneaker phenomenon … same sort of thing. Everyone’s dad back in the day had a pair of adidas shorts that he’d toss on with his short sleeve button up to do yard work and embarrass the hell out of us 😂. Anyhow .. I get your point. That one just has references I can follow. Maybe it’s my age ….. when you get into your 40’s, you realize you have literally seen it all before, even the “crazy” and “out there” things. I’m sure there are lots of images out there somewhere of the hot babes from the late 70’s early 80’s in short gym shorts and high heels …… Heck, in the 80’s there were adidas pants, socks, and heels …. Yup. We’ve seen it before, I’m afraid lol. I think the difference pre social media was that it happened more organically and everyone was in the same pond more or less. People had different aesthetics, but they all happened out in the public square together so it wasn’t maybe as disconnected as the Pinterest or IG girlie is from her natural, physical habitat today.

YES this needed to be said! If you have to be online and see a lot of “fashionable” people do a trend in order to KNOW it’s cute or fashionable, it’s not!!! Actual good fashion and style is like when you’re at a museum seeing art thinking “why is that important” or “I could have done that” and then seeing a piece that makes you think “THAT is art.” It makes you feel something, it has a je ne sais quoi that these Pinterest outfits don’t. Also, the adidas track shorts and a blazer or a “going out top” don’t have much variation, they don’t pull from an expansive cohesive style. They are a copy and paste that shows it’s a very specific trend.
