I grew up in the coal mining area of West Virginia and so am familiar with the culture and problems of Appalachia. I skipped reading "Hillbilly Elegy" when it first came out, but am reading it now. The content is very suspicious. I won't say it's completely contrived, but there are a lot of small things that are suspicious. For example, this line, "Appalachian hills and single room K-12 schoolhouses don't tend to foster big dreams." Why is this suspicious? If there are ANY single room K-12 schoolhouses in Appalachia, they are rare. Personally, I've never known one. Actually the problem is quite the opposite. Due to lack of funding and lower population, you now have these consolidated schools, where they bus students in from an hour away. This might seems like a trivial matter, but it isn't. Vance is trying to play on stereotypes (one room schoolhouses). For the most part he does this in a way that depicts the inhabitants as shiftless, violent people, instead of adding the context of neoliberal deindustrialization that started devastating the region in the 1980s, the consequent drop in tax base and diminishing social services. Rather than shedding light on the plight of Appalachians, Vance treats the people as a disease and compares himself favourably to them so as to cast himself in a radiant light. Vance is an opportunist of the first order. I hate that he is going to present himself as an emissary of the downtrodden. That's just sick.

Michael Moore recommends that Biden not simply step down as the Democratic candidate but that he RESIGN as President NOW so that Kamala Harris takes over! I think this is a terrific idea.
