I feel sorry for Romania as just like my country (Bulgaria) they had to constantly switch sides to avoid worst case scenarios. I understand their pain as we were used as pawns by the bigger countries as well!

I had the oportunity to meet a romanian veteran who fought at Stalingrad about 10 years ago. The poor soul still remembered in detail a lot of things about his battle and how his fellow soldiers were killed near him daily. He even still knew army songs and poems from the war. I was just a kid. That man sparked my interest in ww2 history and history in general. Was such a powerful story to hear and picture. God bless his brave soul

the sad fate of being the small guy(s) in between great powers, Romania played this " I'm allied with one cuz the other is scarier" game for centuries, trying to survive

Romania was indeed more of a "major" nation during ww2. Being the 2rd largest army in the axis and supplying 60% of all of axis oil. Much love to Romania from France, and yes, it was larger and overall better equipped than italy. We all seen italy in ww2... Despite its good navy, The italian army wasnt as good as Romania. Much love to both nations from France.

Being a buffer state between major powers is the pits. Considering their geography, maybe the Romanians have done rather well. Wishing the best to my friends in Romania.

One major detail that i think you missed is that by Romania switching sides over 1 million lives were spared and the war was shortened by over 6 months. This is no small achievement

This comment section is a true mess. Young Romanians liking pro monarch comments, Romanian boomers liking anti-communism comments. Hungarians disliking Romanians. Romanians disliking Hungarians. Non Romanian or Hungarian people making Italy jokes. Italians getting mad at Italy jokes.

Romania always seems to get the short end of the geopolitical stick, always fought over by someother empire that doesn't represent them, and yet they maintain their own independence. Romanians are proud people for good reason because of what they've endured.
