This song transitions directly into The Great Gig in the Sky, which deals with what happens when time runs out. They’re meant to be heard as a pair. The whole album is meant to be heard all the way through in one sitting.

You have a great analysis of this song, one of my all-time favorites, BTW. One of the understated things that makes “Time” such an amazing song is the fact that they employ moments of silence so well. Whether it’s the way each note is stoa to in the introduction, to each line in the stanza ending with a pause to process the words before the next line is delivered, and also in the oohs and ahhs of the background choir, to the rests between chords for the guitar and electric piano, it all gives a great sense of space. And this makes the guitar solo even more beautifully frantic as it goes non-stop, as if crying or screaming at the thought that the starting gun was missed and it will take more effort to catch up than it would have to start “on time”.

The older you get the harder this song hits. The line "The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say" must be the saddest reflection on individual inconsequence and the solitude of death that I've ever heard.

Even to myself, a still relatively young guy, this song has always hit like a fucking truck. I've wasted plenty of time, am very aware of it, and ever since I heard Time for the first time back 15 years ago or so every time I listen to it it slaps me right in the face, no mercy.

This album has to be appreciated in its entirety to really get the full effect. It has a very specific sonic composition that arcs in its arrangement. There’s a reason it is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. This song hits so much harder as I get closer to 50.

I've been listening to PF for almost 50 years and they keep on being relevant. I'm more and more touched by 'Time' as I get older. As I see my parents shuffle off this mortal coil as do some friends. My wife's cancer relapsing.Time becomes more and more precious.

The part after “the song is over” is actually a reprise of the album’s first track, Breathe, creating an additional verse for that song at the end of Time. It thematically creates a perfect segue into the next song, The Great Gig In The Sky, which is about death

This song is brilliant because they composed the music to directly reflect the lyrics. The beginning is shocking (birth), the intro takes forever (childhood), the middle is full of turmoil and chaos (20's-30's), and the end slows down and is very simple (old age). The ending verse about iron bells invokes images of a traditional stone church, probably a funeral.

I agree with the funeral idea as the song leads in to "Great Gig In the Sky", a song about the dying process. It's all a big story about life; from the opening heartbeats to the closing ones.

Even though she kept most of it from us kids, always had a good attitude around us, I know she went through all the stages just like in Great Gig In the Sky. In the end she chose not to get further treatment and let go. The beauty of the ending of that song hits me so hard.

It's interesting how my understanding of this song has evolved as I've aged. Young me always wondered why he sang the line about the song being over so long before the song actually ended. Now I think maybe it's because we start to feel sort of irrelevant years before we actually die. Though we may live another 10 or 20 years, any real chance we might have had to accomplish our dreams is already gone. So our song is over for all practical purposes long before the music actually stops.

I first heard this in Australia in 1975 when I was 15. I am now 63, and the fact that they had so much insight when they were young is just amazing! As I’ve gotten older, this is so much more relevant to me than it was when I was 15. Every line is so true!

I am surprised you have not delved into Pink Floyd. The music touches your being and the lyrics are incredibly poetic. "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" are arguably the best Pink Floyd albums. They are concept albums, essentially meant to be listened to as one whole side at a time. You can listen/react to a single song, but it does not "paint the whole picture". Pink Floyd's lyrics are extremely cerebral, deep in meaning, and often have secondary meanings. Remember this album was released in 1973, essentially making it 50 years old. If you would like recommendations on what to react to I suggest: "Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (Live Pulse 94 concert)" which arguably has one of the best guitar solos in rock history. David Gilmour's guitar performances reach into your soul. and Roger Waters' lyrics often cause you to contemplate the larger picture.

What I was alluding too was the fact that Pink Floyd became commercial and reached the minds of everyone in the UK when "Brick in the Wall" got into the consciousness of everyone and Pink Floyd was heard in the Top 40 by the British Public, until then they were more a fan based band, than Mainstream.

One of the best albums ever made. Each song listened to independently is splendid, but you really should listen to the whole album in sequence. It's a totally immersive sonic experience. The first time I heard DSOTM is a vivid memory for me, my mind was well and truly blown. Edited to add: David Gilmour on that guitar, the most emotive guitarist I've ever heard. He is a true guitar genius. Those fabulous lyrics is Roger Waters' singular lyrical talent on display.

Incredibly clever review! It's unreal how accurately you described this song on first listen! Even with the ending - the song Time flows seamlessly into the next song The Great Gig in the Sky, which is another real treat - a must hear. But really, every person on the planet should hear the whole of this phenomenal work, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this March. The Dark Side of the Moon is a musical gem and I think it should be required school reading. The lyrics are so incredibly clever and still relevant and are accompanied by fantastically crafted music and sound effects. I've listened to this album a thousand times and I still can't get enough of it, and I still find little things in it that surprise me. Take the time to listen to the whole thing, all at once and without a break. Then you will see what a masterpiece it is. And Pink Floyd is guaranteed to enchant you. Excuse my English, I'm from the Czech Republic and I'm assisted by an automatic translator.

One day, when I was around 16, my dad sat me down and made me listen to this song. It really changed my whole perspective on things. My father is a teacher, and whenever he saw somebody with potential but no motivation, he would show them this song. One of these students eventually became an incredibly successful businessman. And years later, when my father visited his office, he showed him the lyrics that he had pinned on the board in front of his desk. This is more than a song. It speaks to the universal human experience like very few other songs do.

Floyd were lyrical geniuses. They wrote some of the greatest lyrics ever written. They were musical geniuses all-round and intrumental virtuosos too but I know that it's the lyrics that you're drawn to. :) They're the 3rd biggest band in history for very good reason. This album alone has spent a total of almost 1000 weeks on the Billboard Album Chart. That's almost 20 years ! Unsurprisingly, it holds the record for most weeks on the chart... by a mile! They are bona fide greats and their music is just as popular today, as when their music was first released. They still outsell 99.9% of contemporary artists. :)

I love the last line in the main section of the song. “The time has come, the song is over. Thought I’d something more to say.” on the surface, he’s talking about the song literally being over, but the song is also a metaphor for his life. He’s run out of time, and realized that all of the grand plans he had, and meaning he expected his life would have when he was younger, have not come to fruition.

Knox, the next track, "Great gig in the sky", follows the 'time' theme through to its ultimate conclusion; death. I really wish that reactors would play them together to get the whole experience. The clock alarms at the beginning represent 'birth' (followed by the imitation heartbeat on percussion), then we are off to the races. Great reaction, fella!

Dude, you nailed this (assuming this was a first reaction and you hadn’t done any pre-research). I’ve been listening to Floyd since I was 12, so that’s like 37 years now. It changed my life. I listened to a lot of rap too, still listen to music from every genre. Some messages come through different and I’m always open. But to this day, I have heard no other music that just gets down into the raw inner workings of me like Pink Floyd. I suggest you listen to their three long songs on Animals. You will be blown away. Another also- the song that comes after this basically is going through the stages of accepting your death. It is not instrumental, yet there are no words. You will understand when you listen.

Totally agree. Excellent interpretation, 100% on point, even without written lyrics! My interpretation of "The song is over." is the dawn of the life though, "Life is over.", not "wasted time of the author". Who knows? ;-)

And even then I somehow felt that “the song is over, I thought I had something more to say” was someone literally knowing they were about to die, and regretting not doing all the things they thought they would. But then also, maybe not even remembering what those things were at that moment. This is the greatest rock song ever in my book, it’s like looking through a lens that is always changing, as we are alway changing

You can thank Alan Parsons (of The Alan Parsons Project of course) for the intro, that was entirely his doing as the engineer on the album. His experience with the Beatles and Pink Floyd is why he's such a great musician and producer.

This is a breath of fresh air! What a band. What a song. What a reaction! I've listened to this countless times and you have picked up on the heart of it in one listen. Sooo very good... And refreshing to hear a band that could easily fade away amongst the noise of modern music being appreciated still. David Gilmour is regarded as the writer/player of some of the most iconic solos in rock history. The whole band are hugely talented. Love it. Thanks for this Knox

The intro has twelve of those guitar “gongs” before the song kicks in. The attention to detail is incredible. Great review, you nailed so much of it. the last verse alludes to a funeral, the penultimate stage of time. The following track is about accepting the process of death. Another profound, hard hitting and inventive song.

The extended intro is kind of a metaphor of the whole song imo. After the alarm clocks, there is the ticking front and center and underneath that the heartbeat. Then you have the ominous power chords; initially there is very little happening within the intervals between the power chords, but the intervals get busier and busier as the song progresses.

Pink Floyd especially this album always gives me a sense of bittersweet nostalgia and peace.. It was my dads favorite album..always takes me back to being on the road with him just driving blasting this. having thought provoking convos about life as I would get older we connected on a deeper level and it was a blessing for him to share his wisdom with me..we both shared a love for this album it's connected to so many of my memories from childhood to adulthood.. For me pink Floyd will always have a place in my heart and my playlist 🖤🙏
