Absolutely. It's easy to have empathy for those who we judge are deserving. But it's much harder and takes effort and intention to extend that compassion to the rest of humanity. ... But making that effort and living with that intent leads to us becoming more deserving ourselves.
@jessicafrazon7393

I understand the concept of not judging too quickly. My mother raised me to always try to see and understand the other person's perspective. My question though, is are there people who you know don't deserve your empathy and understanding? I mean what if they've done some really terrible things and have no remorse whatsoever? Perfect example; I specifically remember my mother glued to the TV for like a week after 9/11, crying every day. But I also remember her telling me that the people who did that had their reasons and at the very least, they don't believe themselves to be bad people. She was trying to understand them and their motives, and get me to as well. I couldn't understand why she was trying to empathize with the terrorists after spending a week grieving the loss of thousands of people she didn't know so strongly that you would have assumed she lost someone personally. I've picked up a lot from her and I'm grateful for that, but at the same time, I know that some people are just evil and they're not worth my time and energy to try to understand their motives. At the end of the day, nothing justifies what they did and I don't need to know why they did it before judging them as bad people. I want to make it clear that I am talking about extreme, brutal actions, not something as common as having a different world view, morals, or political beliefs. I am more like my mother than not like her. I spent years trying to understand both the left's and right's beliefs and still try to help others understand their opposition when I see them judge too quickly and harshly without even knowing what's truly in that person's heart and mind. I've also learned that there is no convincing some people. Some people will instantly go on attack mode, so I don't try as often as I used to, but I still do what I can to help bridge divisions.
@timflesner663

@Jessica Frazon it's not easy. Or necessarily enjoyable and I get alot of flak for taking up the devils advocate role when empathisisizing or trying to understand even the worst out there. But it's a defense mechanism I guess for me. My mom disappeared, a week or two after 9/11. While circumstances and evidence lend us to lean into her being murdered, we got no body and no answers, only questions. Over active imaginations on every possible scenario and motivations are just a rabbit hole I go down. Reconciling her leaving of her own accord abandoning my Lil bro and sis, imagining her maybe killing herself somewhere alone, imagining a robbery gone wrong or my step father killing her, tons of scenarios. Lacking a body or more concrete evidence then we have, we imagine the best and the worst and the in between. Dis she escape the volatile and sometimes abusive (mutually at times) relationship with my stepfather? Chilling in Jamaica a millionaire, or living under a bridge somewhere last twenty years in the cold? And how might I judge her if she showed up at my door? Or did my step father murder her? Or was my step father guilty of something? A well constructed planned out cold blooded murder? A fight gone wrong? My mom struggled with mental health, he could have had to cover up something that wasn't exactly his fault but would have been seen as such. Or was it a serial killer, robbery or random encounter? Where we found her car she could have walked for miles and stumbled into a creek bed and we justbdidnt search enough ground to find it wasvan accident. No one knows. My step father he passed a year or two later. But in that year I had times I couldn't avoid him, wouldn't just accuse him of something horrible, but had enough reason to hate and fume and judge and be miserable in my pain and anger. When he died, any justice or answers in the event of some culpability of his died with him. But at his funeral, his mother (a lady I didn't particularly care for, a curmudgeon that one) sat alone while his family who were present ignored her, so I sat next to her for her to cry on and with. I cried for losses of my own, my own mother (we haven't ever had a funeral for her, his was kind of close to it for me) and she cried For the man who was her little boy gone, maybe lost before he even passed. Their fates intertwined. If she'd left him, she left him broken and accused of worse than he'd done. If he had killed her in cold blood or otherwise, there was little to be gained but knowledge in the form of justice, no punishment after he passed. No wrath to be given. So understanding, empathy and forgiveness were all that were left.

@@timflesner663 wow, that's a wild story. I'm so sorry for whatever happened to your mother, and for you having to live like that for so long, questioning everything. I wasn't there personally. I don't know everything that happened in your home when you were a child, so you'll have more insight than I do. But in reading this I just kept thinking, "of course you can't put the blame on your step father and judge him as a murderer, because you honestly don't know. So that wouldn't be fair to him". However, I can definitely understand how those thoughts would be inescapable and probably hindered your relationship with him for those years. Being able to forgive him, trying to empathize with him, all of that I'm guessing only came with maturity and starting to accept that you're most likely never going to know what really happened to your mother. It's not fair to pass judgement on either of them without knowing what really happened. Especially when you're a child, the emotions you're feeling can easily override any higher logical thinking, and that can sort of force you to judge them in reaction. I'm glad you didn't get stuck in that phase. You grew. My story is absolutely nothing like yours, but I want to share a little bit about my family. I'm the oldest of 4. My dad was addicted to opioids for many years. My mother did an amazing job shielding us from knowing, but we still saw plenty of odd behaviors that we couldn't explain. He died from an overdose when I was 16, and that is when my mother finally told me the truth. I think she just needed some help in that time, so I had to know the truth. Suddenly so much made sense; why he was in and out of our lives(jail and rehab several times, visiting him at both places), his energy highs and lows, his short temper, nodding off in the bathroom while caulking with monistat, why my mom hid money in my encyclopedias, etc. Knowing this about my dad didn't make me love him any less. I'll admit, I was angry with him for killing himself (it was intentional). At the time I thought that was selfish and he wasn't thinking about us. But I was 16. I had years with him, and I know how much he loved us. I saw him fight this battle for years(even if I didn't truly understand it at the time), and he did that for us. As I grew up, I started to understand his struggle better, and I forgave him. My baby sister was only 6 when he died. She's now 24, and to this day she still can't forgive him. She still thinks that it was an incredibly selfish thing to do and that it proves that he didn't really love us. It makes me sad that I can't get her to understand. I know how much my father loved us. I can remember so much more than she can. I know that if he didn't love us, he would have taken his life probably 10 years earlier and my 3 younger sisters never would have even been born. He tried so hard and so many times to defeat this demon, but in the end he lost. I know what depression and drug abuse does to your brain. He most likely was thinking of us in that moment; thinking that no matter what he does he'll never be good enough, he'll never overcome, he's only bringing us down, so this is the best thing he could do FOR us. It's messed up thinking, I know, but that is what happens. So for my sister to still say that he didn't actually love us, that hurts me. I understand her perspective, but I wish she could try to understand his and forgive him. He really was an amazing man. He just had a lot of problems. Ah dang, I'm sorry. I forgot why I got into all that now. I know it tied back to your story in some way, maybe something about judging based off of emotions without knowing or considering all the factors. I'm sorry I've lost my train of thought.

I'm gonna be liking and commenting on every vid of yours I see, because I really want to see you hit 1M subs.

Also completely on board with your comparison between Ren and Tolkien... different formats obviously but the attention to detail and world-building within their works is very similar. I wouldn't be surprised if Tolkien holds some inspiration for Ren too. He uses mordor and nazghul references in one of his songs but in addition Tolkein was massively enamoured with Wales which is evident in his work and if you weren't aware Ren himself is Welsh... just some more of my random musings lol

I love love love the way you come in and breakdown the lyrics and production of all these BRILLIANT songs Ren has done. Personally I think he's a complete and total musical genius, but he's SO subtle about it that it's often hard to catch! Quite the genius yourself sir!

I'm REALLY liking the discussions(?)/thought flow in this. The humanity and empathy is honestly what draws me here the most. You have really good, engaging react videos (from what I've thus far seen), and they are also educational in a way. Hits that sweet spot, I guess, if that makes sense. 😅

My bad.. I just realized I wasn't subscribed and fixed that oversight. I've been watching your reactions because you break down everything he's doing so well, but you're great at explaining in terms that are not over my head. I'm not very into rap with some exceptions because a lot of it is so fast, or so mumbly that I can't understand the lyrics. I appreciate Ren because his diction is so good. It makes his stuff more accessible for my middle aged ass. I appreciate the same thing in your music. Thank you for breaking things down for us. You deserve the shoutout and recognition, and I apologize for forgetting to hit that subscribe until today.

I love the discussion of the intricacies of creation, the philosophies, musical and literary discussion, the Easter eggs, the camaraderie between Knox and Ren. I love all of this! My best friend died 2 years ago and he and I devoured books, music, films and talked about it all. This reminds me of that important relationship that I miss but still lives in my memory. ❤❤
