Old Metallica nerd here 🤘just a couple of things to enhance your knowledge of this masterpiece The drumming section in the middle of the song represents morse code for “Kill Me” The patient One is so desperate to die, but with no means of communication left, he bangs his head in morse code to beg to be killed. Also Metallica bought the rights to this movie in order to be able to use it unrestricted in this video. This video is SO moving, in my opinion the greatest rock video ever made. The movie these clips are from is called "Johnny Got His Gun" which is an anti-war film based off of the novel of the same name written by Dalton Trumbo. The story follows the injured man Joe Bonham and his experience with being trapped inside his own head with no way of communicating with the outside world. The main moral conflict being whether to keep him alive, living in his own hell or to grant him the gift of death. He eventually communicates with the doctors using the Morse Code and asks for them to kill him, but they end up ignoring his requests and forced him to remain alive... It is truly some disturbing but very powerful stuff. Highly recommend both the film and the novel

Metallica is one of those bands where the older I get the more I appreciate. The instrumentality has this flow from melodic to heavy and back, sometimes in a jarring way, but never distracting from the song. The lyricism is poetic and straightforward at the same time, and the choice of delivery definitely gives the words weight in key points. And going back and watching their official music videos, there's symbolism for the message they want to get across but also leaving it open ended enough to let others take away more than what is shown. I've been a fan of theirs since I was a kid and I love their music more and more as the years pass.

Love the breakdown! This is one of my favorite songs, not just of Metallica's but in general. I especially love the riffs starting around 9:50 that sound like bursts of gunfire. I really love seeing anyone's first exposure to this song. Also, as I recall, the line at 12:51 is actually "Don't you have some message for him, padre?" and is coming from the commanding officer. So the line "He's the product of your profession. Not mine." is actually coming from a priest; basically saying "This is the war's/the military's doing, not God's."

That was the doctor saying that to a career military officer. You have to remember, this movie was based on a soldier returning from WWI, at that time just about every able bodied male was in the military, including doctors, so the line was taking a jab at the perils of war. I can see ones confusion though since the doctor is in a military uniform.

That’s my greatest fear. Being “alive” but trapped in my own body. That’s why I fully support assisted suicide. No one should be able to force another person to live. There was a story about an acid victim in the UK who’s jealous ex gf poured acid on him while he slept. They showed where he rung a neighbors doorbell for help and it melted the metal. He was in an induced coma for 9 months and even his father didn’t recognize him. He had tons of skin grafts and amputations and eventually was able to regain the ability to speak which kept him sort of sane. But then he developed an infection and required a tube to be inserted in his throat permanently, losing his tether to sanity and family. He was also moved to a nursing home that was I’ll equipped for the care he required and not to mention the unrelenting pain he faced everyday. That’s when his father hired a private ambulance and medical transfer company and he took him back to the Netherlands (their home country)so he could receive assisted suicide. They had to hide it because there were those opposed, but how can anyone force someone else to live (even though what he was doing was far from. “living”) a life of pain? Same with full lifesaving measures on a 91 year old in full organ failure after a fall. Just because you can “save” someone, doesn’t mean that you should . The guy was able to go out peacefully with his father by his side.

Yes! This song is phenomenal!! I no longer allow myself to listen to this in the car cuz I’ve almost run several stop signs and traffic lights from headbanging too hard 😅😅 The interspliced clips are from a movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It’s an anti war movie about a soldier who gets hit with a shell and loses all his limbs and basically all his senses and motor functions and essentially becomes trapped in his own body. Metallica actually bought the movie rights because it would be cheaper than paying the royalties in perpetuity 9:50 that machine gun riff isn’t just dope but it’s yet another great example of how Metallica uses their instruments to help tell a story “What’s he saying? Kill me. Over and over again, kill me” “He’s a product of your profession, not mine” Those are some chilling quotes man This is my favorite Metallica solo. The fingertapping at the start is so fucken smooth! 👌🏻🔥🔥 The title One comes from the first line in the chorus “Now the world is gone, I’m just one” it’s about the solitude he feels in his current state. This gets reinforced by the movie quote near the end “each man pays a debt by himself. Alone.”

My mum was a nurse in Vietnam during the war & dealt with a lot of horrific stuff, she rarely talks about it & I wasn't allowed to play this when she was home. She told me that it was pretty common for the nurses to just "trip over" someone's life support tubes or "mess up" the morphine & od them & they were called angels for that. It would be horrendous to have to even think about doing that. But we help out our pets when they become old & sick or injured & there's nothing left for them so we give them a peaceful send off so I personally don't see it as a bad thing to go all Jack Kevorkian & where I live now we do have some dignity in death legislation in place, which is pretty revolutionary. Whew that's a lot. And congrats on getting signed!

Their best video imo. 🔥... It's from a movie from the 1971 called Johnny Got Is Gun. It's named "One" for the fact this soldier lost everything, arms, legs, most of his face, ears, voice. What are the chances of anyone surviving those injuries,ONE in a million.

@@Lurch685 Like I said you can hate all you want……. Lars may not be as technical as drummers like Todd Sucherman for instance. And he may not play a million beats per minute like some people think he should lol. But one thing about Lars that nobody can take away is…..without Lars Metallica wouldn’t exist. He is one of if not the main reason Metallica are so successful today. Now I understand you’re just hating on Lars cause you think it’s the cool thing to do. And that’s fine you have that right to do so. But at least be honest with your hate. Lars is and has been one of the most influential and successful drummers on the planet for many years.

2 year sub here, always love your Hip-Hop/Rap reactions, but this is one of my favorite reactions you've ever done. You should definitely do more classic Rock reactions, a lot of it has some really deep meanings. You should check out The Trees by Rush. Entire song is a metaphor and a message. An important one at that. Even if you don't react on video, listen for yourself. It's great. Keep it up bro! Much love.

This is one of the few songs that literally forces a hard cry. The movie Johny got his gun is probably one of the saddest and most heartbreaking stories (Which all true minus the land mine being a Mortar shell) To know your alone and left with unknowing anything but the events of your life playing on repeat while also having delusions of being yourself as a child and talking to your memory of your long passed father who basically told you you’re life is worth less than the principality of your country just hits hard. The line where Johny thanks the nurse for basically allowing him to die then having the doctor rip her away and him slipping back INTO life shattered my soul. You should definitely watch the movie

It and the clips in the Metallica video give me chills every time!

Knox you are one of the best reactors and one of a few that could do this song/video any type of justice. My take on the title "one" is the chances of all of that happening to one person and still remaining alive is one in a million. He is that one.

At the end there, he was left to spend the rest of life to live like that. They didn't do him any mercy at the end despite of his plea... They kept him alive to live trapped in his own mind for ever and ever... he can't tell what time it is, where he is, when he is. He can't interact or stimulate with anything. He is left with his own thoughts. He is in a prison of himself left for the military to experiment on him....terrifying. Literal hell on earth.

one of my favorite Metallica songs was the first song Metallica ever did a music video for the footage switches between footage from the 1971 movie johnny got his gun and Metallica playing and seeing them playing the song. its based off a person from war that was injuried during the war by a landmine that has left him basically everything escept his torso and him being kept alive on life support and the fact that cause of this he has no voice or way to communicate that they should just kill him and that internal struggle to try to end his suffering

That "organized chaos" you hear is actually the band playing "kill me" in morse code from what I understand. As for why the title is one, refer to the lyric, "Now the world is gone, I'm just one."

From the perspective of 'Johnny', as the line in the song says "Now the world is gone, I'm just One," After the explosion he is left with face and all limbs destroyed, and the only thing he can move is his head, hence the Morse code. The doctors believe he is basically braindead, incapable of conscious thought, but throughout the story they realise he is communicating. The 'He's a product of your profession, not mine' is spoken by a priest to an officer, if that helps. I first discovered this in 1989 when it was released and I was 9 years old, It has been my favourite Metallica song ever since. Thanks for the reaction Knox!
