Salaam Development Center (SDC), an independent non-profit organization operating in Somalia, has successfully executed the transformative Kobciye project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Funded by the European Union through the World Food Programme, this three-phase initiative aimed at enhancing food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience in four agricultural villages-Laacdheere, Rabaable, Cuun, and Balley-located in the Garowe district of the Nugal region, Puntland State.
The project, benefiting 130 farms, was strategically designed under a Food Systems lens, focusing on bolstering the food security and nutrition of smallholder farmers. Kobciye prioritized the needs of internally displaced persons, women, and youth, with the overarching goal of fortifying resilience to shocks. Smallholder farmer producer groups (cooperatives) played a pivotal role, with a vision to develop them into self-governing, demand-driven community-based organizations.
To achieve these objectives, six comprehensive training sessions were conducted. The topics ranged from cooperatives and good governance to digital and financial literacy, market linkage, good agricultural practices, post-harvesting loss management, and the establishment of Village Saving Loan Associations (VSLA). These sessions empowered farmers with essential skills and knowledge, fostering improved agricultural practices.
Recognizing the importance of climate-friendly technology, the Kobciye project delivered a range of resources to farmers. This included 10 greenhouses, 43 drip irrigation systems, 28 solar panels, and 15 fencing systems across project sites. Furthermore, each location was equipped with farm tractors, enhancing productivity and efficiency. Additionally, the construction of four post-harvest storage rooms ensured that farmers could store their fresh produce adequately before transporting it to the market.
Continuous monitoring and follow-up were integral components of the project's implementation. This meticulous oversight yielded significant harvests of fresh produce, marking a substantial increase in agricultural production. The project's success aligns seamlessly with its target goal of fostering resilient communities and improving overall income security.
The Kobciye project, implemented by Salaam Development Center in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, stands as a beacon of impactful development. By addressing the unique challenges faced by smallholder farmers, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons, women, and youth, the project has not only enhanced food security and nutrition but has also empowered communities to become self-sufficient and resilient. Through strategic training sessions and the provision of essential climate-friendly technologies, Kobciye has laid the foundation for sustainable agricultural practices and improved livelihoods in the Garowe district of the Nugal region. The success of this initiative is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Salaam Development Center, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and the support of the European Union and the World Food Programme.
