@Last chance Cowboy No military necessity? Koblenz was the biggest railroad hub in rhineland palatine and it was set at the crossing of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Who owns Koblenz owns the rhine river, even the romans knew that. Koblenz was crucial in logistical aspects and was thus the target of many many attacks.

@Last chance Cowboy "you believe the incineration of this beautiful old historic city was legitimate, because it was a rail junction? " Morally and historically, no. Militarily and strategically, yes. And at times of war, morals generally play only a minor role... "And this was the 20th century not medieval times" True, the early 20th century was a prime example of a world where technological advances outpaced the development of morals and ethics to handle that technology responsibly. "I don’t remember us sending battleships up the Rhine river ?" Funny thought but no. still it was a very important port strategically. From there, provisions could go to france, to bavaria, to northern germany,... you get the idea. "Don’t be absurd , there was little there other then civilians, and that was the actual target" there was a military fort (that was back then still used militarily), two barracks and as stated a lot of logistical infrastructure. I live in Koblenz. you don't know my city better than I do. Yes, revenge on the civilians was part of it, but it's not like that was the main motivation here.
@fizzarolli5416
@fizzarolli5416 2 жыл бұрын
@Last chance Cowboy Long comment. So long that I have to divide my reply into multiple parts. A lot of truth but also some questionable or even straightup bullshit claims here. So let's dissect this: 1/? "the RAF night bombing, in particular had NO military necessity. It was city bombing because that’s all they could hit with primitive aiming at night" Somewhat true. Yes, the night bombings were overkill and unnecessary. And revenge was a HUGE motivation for the RAF. However, a whole lot of Wehrmacht soldiers have been preparing city wars by barricading and building defense positions among the civilians. Take Stalingrad and now imagine small-scale stalingrads all over germany. not as well equipped, and on the brink of collapse due to lack of supplies, but still a horrible situation for everyone involved. I'm not saying that the bombs were good in any way. And I'm not defending the brits for it. Just stating that in a war with someone who almost annexed your country just like half of europe, you want to end things quickly without considering how the enemy feels like, so they didn't want to wait months until the people, including the soldiers, were starving to the point of giving up. "And The British planned this pre war" citation needed. "Late war Germany used V weapons, but it was retaliatory." True. when germany lost its grip on most of europe and the americans joined, germany built the V-weapons to turn the war in their favour again and to take revenge for the losses. But in late ww2, all sides took many hits and the main motivation to keep going was retaliation for the retaliation for the retaliation for the.... "And the destruction of your beautiful city was that necessary? It indeed was the civilians. Not the inconsequential barracks and logistics bridges rail yards" Sure, it was overkill. no doubt about it. Yet, with a propaganda machine like ww2 germany's, big parts of the SS were ready to fight to the last man, to reclaim the fatherland. Even after Hitler's death. An example of this was the seige of castle itter, where the Wehrmacht actually joined the US forces to fight the SS that has barricaded themselves in the castle to prepare a retaliation attack. Demoralizing the general population was an effective - yet extremely cruel - way to break the motivation of these soldiers. Another way would have been to starve them out of the city in a month long siege that would cost a lot more money because it had to happen all over germany. I wonder which would have been worse, morally. "You live in a country were one can be incarcerated for voicing opinions that contradict the government narrative on your past. [...] The complete opposite in today’s Russia, were you can be incarcerated for talking about red army , soviet era crimes !" Bullshit. There are two things that are illegal in germany: propagating that the holocaust never happened, and propagating that the holocaust was justified. And even these are only punished when they happen on huge scale, like giving speaches about it to thousands of people. And EVEN THEN you're not incarcerated but you'll just get a fine of a few hundred bucks and can go on your merry way. All other events or discussions though? no consequences. Just a quick question in between: Why do you so often make a space between the last word in a sentence and the dot? I notice that a lot with older people, but I never really understood why that is. "But I bet you know all about the Holocaust?" The basic things but not too in-depth. "I work with Germans that travel to North America, mostly young , there spoon fed Holocaust stories from birth , every day over and over , until there sick of it . Of course the obligatory Wehrmacht crimes fill in the space in between." I mean, WW1 and 2 were the most significant things that happened to germany in the early 20th century and they laid the foundations of what happened during the cold war, the divide of germany and the reunification. It's basically like you probably were spoonfed a lot about the american civil war as a kid.Just that it's not an internal affair but an external war. Usually countries' education systems will try to give a positive spin on the history of their country. But in the case of ww2, that objectively is not possible. So we're mostly taught about the rise of the regime, the historical causes that lead to it, the dangers of hateful propaganda, the enabling act, the great depression, the weimar republic etc. It's less about the historic battles during the war itself.

@Last chance Cowboy 2/2 I would recommend the video "Do Germans learn about the Nazis?" by the youtuber "Rewboss". He's a british guy living in germany and he explains it really well in just 5 minutes. "The complete opposite in today’s Russia, were you can be incarcerated for talking about red army , soviet era crimes !" Exactly. The complete opposite. Because you don't suddenly get disappeared in germany for saying anything against the current, past or future politics. I digress, but really, what am I supposed to answer to such bullshit? "But I bet you know all about the Holocaust?" Again, we're mostly taught about the rise of the regime, the historical causes that lead to it, the dangers of hateful propaganda, the enabling act, the great depression, the weimar republic etc. It's less about the historic battles during the war itself and more about making sure history doesn't repeat itself. "I work with Germans that travel to North America, mostly young , there spoon fed Holocaust stories from birth , every day over and over , until there sick of it ." Well, We’re not the US, we’re not Japan, so yes we learn about the shit our country did. "But you my friend are much worse , as you have been brainwashed into believing any of this criminal firebombing of your cities was necessary ." Not really, no. As I said, it was overkill. I just don't cry over about the destruction of the city 80 years ago so I don't get all emotional about it, like you obviously do. And I can see how it could be strategically justified. Necessary? No. Morally right? not at all, but what is morally right at a war? "Your forefathers were in a life and death struggle with the red hordes and diverted scarce resources to protect there women and children in targeted cities . That could have been used to hold back the raping hordes , but I’m betting you don’t know much about that either ?" You seem confused where Koblenz is located. The raping and randomly murdering hordes were the russian troops. The british, french and american troops were - relatively - civilized in dealing with the civilian population. It was the russians who fell in like barbarians, killed, raped and plundered. Not so fun fact: My grand grandfather was forced to join the army, as he was a radio mechanic and was proficient in handling transistors and vacuum tubes. His batallion was sent to defend the eastern front. During their retreat, they had left all equipment behind and were running for their lifes. They had to swim through a river because the bridge was destroyed. The soviets had a nice target practice that day. A few days later he was fished out of the Oder river. "I am out of arguments so I spew some insults at you." Yeah yeah, Up yours. "Be proud of were you come from as there’s much to be proud of . And question your historical past , as much is questionable ." Well, "pride" in the achievements of people who have nothing in common with you other than the birth place is a bit weird but yes, germany has a long an interesting history. The lutheranian reformation, the the unification of germany by Otto von Bismarck, the League of the Rhine,... It's just not all rosy though, as is no country's past. "I voted today as our election is this week ." Ah, you're russian huh? Your weird demeanor starts to make a bit more sense now. I thought you were american before and was quite confused about some of your stances on history. "Your government controls everything in Germany, and you can lose your job, or worse if you stray from the government propaganda narrative . " Bullshit. Just pure and absolute bullshit. Name me one case where this happened. You won't because it didn't. Germany isn't russia. "But they haven’t yet made whom you vote for public knowledge, it’s the one place in Germany you can still feel free ." Unlike russia, germany is a democracy. We vote on the upcoming sunday, and the voting results are published after the vote because they aren't predetermined. ;) "No body is looking over your shoulder , use that opportunity to vote for a leader that won’t grovel to your neighbors for the past or , keep apologizing to Israel , and for fuks sake stop letting them extort money every year." I've already made up my mind about who I'll give my two votes for this week. And It's not gonna be the rightwingers. "Many see we’re your country is going , with the mass immigration of Africans , Syrians etc… how’s that working out for you ? Had enough yet ?" Woah, where's that coming from now? We were talking about history, remember? But if you absolutely want to know: as long as they are willing to work, to integrate/assimilate and as long as they don't break the law in any meaningful way, I don't have a problem with refugees. There are many refugees from germany's past all over the world as well so it would be a bit hypocritical to judge them for fleeing when their own world is burning. However, when they show that they don't want to abide the rules in germany, they can go back to there they came from IMO. "More and more are voting for change , and it shocks your government , there scared about what people think . And they cannot control this ." I'm one of them. I am going to vote for the green party. In the past, I was a supporter of the social democrat party, but they alongside the more right leaning christian party have been in a lot of shady stuff and their corruption is blatantly obvious. "Voting AFD or even the NPD will at least give you a voice , they will never take power , but with a few in your parliament, at least it will stop , or slow Merkels destruction of Germany. Wake the fuk up . " This shows that you either have no clue about german politics or you're a right wing ideologue. Voting NPD (literally, nationalistic party of germany) or AFD (which is a splinter party of the NPD) is like voting for the german nazi party all over again. The AFD is popular because the previous moderate rightwing party (CDU) has jumped more to the left under chancellor Merkel. However, in the last few years after the last election, the AFD showed their ugly face by openly and in unison denying the existence of global warming, being first for, then against, then for and now against vaccines and covid restrictions (showing they don't care what it is, as long as they are against the governing parties' stances), the almost abolition of wellfare for the poor as well as massive tax reductions for the rich and lowering the standards set in the german labour laws. That is the reason why they've lost a whole lot of popularity - according to private as well as government funded surveys
