Thank you for actually asking people for permission. A lot of street photographer feels very predatory, I’ve had multiple cases of people jumping directly into my path, snapping a photo and then running off. I can understand wanting to capture a candid moment, but I also feel like the fact that you took a moment to develop a little bit of a rapport with people led to better photos. Great video as always

I agree, I have always found people who take photos without consent creepy, I find photographers who ask before taking pictures of other people to be a more respectful.
@willstith1
@willstith1 2 жыл бұрын
@@TinLeadHammer There's absolutely no need for consent. If you're on the street you have no expectation of privacy. Asking for permission is cool if you want to make a posed portrait but it's absolutely not necessary or creepy to shoot candid photography. It's absolutely vital actually.

But street photography for me is catching those fleeting moments of everyday life and asking for permission makes it posed. This is street portrait photography and my style is being candid and the people just make up part of the story of street, so often the surrounding outscales the people. I think that tales the real story of the street.

Been waffling back and forth on this. A lot of people say "Why not just get an Olympus Pen", and that's true, but hunting for a quality example will either cost you money or time, and while that's a worthwhile hunt there's something refreshing about the availability and simplicity of this. Don't have to worry about a failing mirror or aged shutter speeds, and if you do break or lose this camera you're not starting the "hunt" all over. The plastic lens can leave a bit to be desired but I've also seen some amazing shots for what it is which speaks to how film choice and lighting is critically important here. Thanks for helping drag the needle back to wanting one

Go for it! I got mine yesterday and I am still working my way through my test roll. I have an Olympus Pen, but the shutter speeds are iffy at best, so half the roll never comes out right. the simplicity of a true point and shoot is very attractive, as is the price.
@WittyDroog
@WittyDroog 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgecaldwell704 Yeah I ended up pulling the trigger. Its a good backup for when I don't want to worry about damaging or losing the camera, for messing with expired rolls, and I have an upcoming party that I'm going to load up and have as a party "Take Pictures with Me" affair where image quality is not the priority. Sometimes cheap fun IS good enough

Don’t forget that the Kodak has flash. With no need to worry about too-slow shutter speeds, and no need to worry about missed focus or too-shallow depth of field, the Kodak probably takes better indoor/night pics (despite the lower quality lens).
@jeffreycrawley1216
@jeffreycrawley1216 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily true. I saw an immaculate Pen EE in a local thrift store recently for just $18, it even had the original soft pouch. The trouble with half frame was that after the initial boom in the early 1960s they didn't catch on with the masses - why fiddle about with a 135 cassette when you could slap a cartridge into an Instamatic? So you find a lot of pristine Olympuses, Minoltas, Yashicas and Konicas that have been gathering dust since the late 60s emerging now that Grandpa has died and the grand-kids are having a clear out. I still have mine in the back of a cupboard and used to shoot Kodachrome with it. Trouble was that, in the UK, you'd have to send it off to Kodak and they'd sting you for additional cost - double the photos, double the holders.
@WittyDroog

So nice to see half-frame making an approachable comeback! A month ago or so i was about to buy an Olympus Pen, but ended up picking a Fujica Half instead. Im so happy with half frame! I've been taking pictures nonstop everytime i go out, and still have half the film to go~ It's truly the best option for cheaper film experiences~

I've also been on the hunt for a half frame camera. Though I'm not too into rangefinders, the minolta repo s would be my dream camera for this. But I'll have to settle on the H35 for now.

Came in thinking "what can you talk about a half-frame toy camera". Turns out I really enjoyed seeing the people you shot. So much personality and stereotypically New York. Makes me want to go out to talk to people or hang out in a park.

Gotta say the bucket hat is winning. Proper headgear for on street photography is often overlooked and disregarded when in the field. Kudos for rocking the bucket. But, I digress. This is a really great camera and what a great price. Still makes more expensive film stretch a bit longer and it's re-loadable. The question is did it have a parallax frame in the view finder? I have 35 cameras but my Half-Frames just rule when for trips and street photography. Check out sometime a very bizarre half frame from the 1940s called a Universal Mercury II. Magnesium and aluminum body with a rotary shutter like a movie camera. Half frame with a 1000 speed shutter for 1947 and made in New York. Got more graphs on the thing than a NASA engineers room. Cheers!
@ericsachs2157
@ericsachs2157 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the bucket hat is good for the “making friends” with strangers approach to street photographer. Most of the street photographers I see in NYC end up taking kinda the opposite approach, and they end up looking they are auditioning for a “burglar in an alarm system commercial” acting gig.

Not to mention, celebrating the great diversity we have here in NYC. I'll be picking up this camera because of your video. Cheers, Charles

not gonna lie the fisheye shots were dope. If they made it standard with the kit, or like a deluxe add-on that'd be so sick. 72 shots does feel like a slogfest but having "color portraits" seemed like a cool way to get through the frames!

I have a skateboard and vinyl store but I sell film and these plastic cameras. The thing is that kids, mostly 20 year olds are getting started on film and they want something practical , so they buy a lot of those plasticky cameras to have fun, they are not picky with that. So this is a good option since film is so expensive right now. I have a half frame a canon tele 6 and i got it on ebay and it was sooo hard to get, and I was so nervous that it didnt work.

Looking forward to mine showing up eventually. I have Reto’s UWS, and love it. So tiny and light, and really wide. Don’t get me wrong, I like vintage cameras, but a vintage gear wider than 28mm gets really expensive, so the UWS is a great alternative. This H35 seems like it has essentially the same lens, and the center cut of it should be decently sharp, for a cheap plastic lens camera. I think this will be a lot of fun.

I was gifted an Olympus Pen (EE3) a few years back, and what a fun economical little camera it is! Can confirm it feels like it takes ages to finish a roll when shooting half frame. Only shot with it once to test it and confirm the new seals I put in were working, but now I'm eager to get some more film for it.

I really liked this video but honestly I wonder how it would have looked in color. So many of the people that you were photographing had some vivid outfits, and honestly maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to try this concept again with kodak ultramax or color plus? Possibly even Ektar, after all it's vivid and shares a name with the camera. Portra would also work since it's a portrait film but its colors aren't as saturated as other kodak products.

I like landscape orientation. For landscape you have to hold the camera vertically. In the past the Yashika Samurai had a vertical transported film like in movie cameras. The standard orientation of the frames are landscape. All in all half frame cameras save film. Not a bad in times of film price inflation.

most of the test shots were vertical. Do you have to take verticals to take advantage of the half-frame? or does the camera autorotate it 90° to fit a horizontal shot? OR OR, is rotating the physical camera vertical taking a landscape photo? guess im curious how it works inside the camera with the film still moving left to right (i assume).
@Forever_Muffin
@Forever_Muffin 2 жыл бұрын
if you look up how half-frame cameras work, they "cut" the full frame right in the middle. So instead of having one horizontal frame, you have two vertical ones. Therefore, when you take a picture holding the camera just like you normally would, the photo is vertical, and you have to rotate it 90º to get a landscape picture
@WittyDroog
@WittyDroog 2 жыл бұрын
The strip of film is horizontal like normal, but to fit two half frames they are in portrait orientation (versus like a Yashica Samurai that loads the film vertically so the frames are in landscape orientation) The viewfinder is in portrait too to help you, and you can always rotate the camera to take landscape photos. Since two frames fit on a single 35mm frame it caters well to the pairing of two photos. Personally I think taking diptych paired photos is the main purpose of this camera. Half frames are, after all, half the resolution so taking single shots might not be the best use case for this, and when you take pairs the sting of its cheap lens (compared to higher end half frame cameras like an Olympus Pen) is greatly reduced thanks to the visual storytelling and visual interest you create in that gap.
