Pro tip for the diy filter: Don't spray the filter straight on, spray a bit in the air and then catch the particles with the filter. That way you get an even coat, I found 2-3 layers to be quite a bit too much for my liking (though it depends on how thick your coats are). It's worth doing a coat, testing on a digi camera and adding/starting over if needed. After doing this, make sure to screw the filter on, so you don't accidentally touch or smear it. This is my first time seeing this film, didn't even know it existed. You're like the only channel that I have notifications enabled, these videos are just way too fun to watch.

I really miss HIE, I wish someone else would come up with an infrared film with that level of sensitivity and no anti-galati on layer. But the cost of HIE back in the day was around £15 a roll, which means under today’s costs it would probably be around £60 a roll.

They’re so expensive because the sensitising dyes used to make them are synthesised in small quantities and very *very* expensive. Apparently to do a coating run would need kilos of the stuff and it just wouldn’t be economical to produce. Like technical pan, shoot it while you can still find it I guess.

For what little it's worth, I feel like your fogged filter / diy diffraction filter might be going for a more soft focus / chromatic aberration style effect, rather than simulation halation. Soft focus gives fuzzy edges across the field, and if my brain is working right, I think halation would give you fuzzy edges around the brighter parts of the image. Then again, I'm sure they're close enough in practice. So, whatever. heh Anyway, for halation simulation? My guess might be to do multiple exposures, one regular one, and then one with a fog filter atop at a much shorter shutter speed to get the fuzzy highlights. That, or something silly like putting a reflective surface behind your film. Then again maybe Orwo's UN54 would be easiest, it doesn't have an anti halation layer (but it only goes up to 650nm so, *shrug* on the HIE simulation) Total aside but I am a bit of a soft focus enjoyer. If you have money to burn, there are some modern lenses which have that fuzzy CA wide open, most recently, the voigtlander 50/1.5 heliar classic.

I bought a few books, that because they discuss Kodak and Konica B&W IR films are themselves obsolete. They tought me a lot and some good note taking and I was getting great results. I actually sold some poster prints of my backyard! Now days I try to recreate it with my IR converted D300S BUT... I would totally use this film again if Kodak re released it. It's along with Aerochrome IR that I wish we'd see again. Knowing Kodak they'd charge $40 a roll though.

I imagine the glow is going to be problematic. On HIE it is caused by a lack of anti-halation layer so the glow is cause by light piping through the film surface. The highlights glow while the shadows don't, the highlights bleed into them. A lens filter will make for a uniform blurriness rather than glow. Perhaps a proper Pro-mist filter would help; they tend to make highlights softer without effecting shadows too much.

I haven't done this but I've thought about it long enough that it might just work. The only thing is that it won't work for portraits, but I don't think you'll mind. Put a fog filter on the lens to make things glow. Add a green filter to make the foliage properly white. And on top of that put a polarizer to make sure that the skies turn black. That should give you the look you want.

The shot at 5:42 (without the hairspray filter) is sick. Some of the other ones on HIE and faux-HIE are also awesome. While you got closer than I would have guessed to emulating that awesome HIE look with diffusion/scuffed rear elements, etc., it seems like you're fundamentally just softening everything, which isn't quite the same as getting halation glow. Halation would leave shadows relatively sharp and make highlights more diffuse, right? Crazy idea, what if you unspooled some regular IR film like SFX, gave it a distilled water rinse in complete darkness, let it dry in complete darkness, and then respooled it into the cassette (or back on the spool with backing paper if you do it with 120 instead of 135). You'd rinse off all the anti-halation dyes. In theory you'd end up with an unexposed IR film that simply lacks the anti-halation layer. Almost exactly the same thing as HIE, just not quite as strongly infrared. Of course you may well screw up other things on the emulsion by wetting and drying it, but I'd guess probably not too severely. After all, the images on film still look great after being thoroughly wet and dried during a standard development process. I have a few rolls of SFX I bought last winter that have been sitting in the fridge waiting for summer. Once I get a good "standard" process dialed in for them I might sacrifice one in the name of science...

You doing a great job! I like very much the result of colour reproduction of your last try in this video. Also I'd like to point you on a small detail: some old lenses have a IR mark on the focusing ring, mean that you need shift focus for IR light. Not sure that all modern lens have good chromatic aberration correction. And at this point not only glow but some focus loss may take a place.

Okay, so a) you want halation (or something like it), and b) you want at least 750 nm or so IR sensitivity (800+ would be better). Microfilm. Most microfilm stocks (like Copex Rapid or Imagelink FS) are coated on a clear base with no antihalation in any form, and many have "extended red sensitivity" -- both a higher sensitivity in the red part of the spectrum than common Type B panchromatic films (more like Tech Pan, another lost marvel that was itself based on a document film) and some sensitivity into near IR. Worst case, you can use a deep red instead of R72 for your IR effect shots; most foliage will still show the "glow" with this filter. For that matter, Tech Pan itself might work for this (though I don't think it's any cheaper than HIE, as it's been out of production longer and is likely to have collected less fog due to its low speed). You won't get that big, in-your-face grain your HIE samples gave (in fact, you'll have trouble finding grain to focus on if you make darkroom prints), but you might be able to recreate the rest of the HIE look, albeit with MUCH longer exposures (most of these films, in their optimized developers, are only ISO 12 to 50 for pictorial contrast -- Copex Rapid is one of the faster ones, at 25 to 50 depending on development -- and they'll be multiple stops slower with deep red or IR filtration). Copex Rapid, at least, is available in 35 mm (both perfed and unperfed, so watch what you're buying). I've seen Imagelink in unperfed 16 mm (which works fine in Minolta 16 format cameras and some 110 cameras if you can manage to reload a cartridge), but I don't recall seeing it on eBay in 35 mm (but I don't look every day, hundreds of rolls could have slipped by when i wasn't looking over the past twenty years). I've processed Copex Rapid in the same developers that work well for ADOX CMS 20 -- my preference was for a low contrast version of Caffenol (instant coffee, vitamin C powder, and laundry soda) but it works well in H&W Control or Rodinal 1:100 also (test for speed).

I actually have a roll of the 16mm Copex Rapid. I bought an old Soviet 16mm "spy camera" so I could shoot it. Even spent some absurd amount of money on a steel spool that would fit in my Nikor development tank if I recall correctly. Shot and souped a couple of rolls in very dilute XTOL but ultimately couldn't tame the contrast and wasn't impressed enough with the images to keep bothering with it. Maybe one of these days I'll design and 3D print an adapter that lets me use it in my 35mm SLRs and try running it through an IR filter haha.

@@andrewbroekhuijsen6770 I've had best results with a low contrast version of Caffenol. A little coffee crystals, a little vitamin C, a little laundry soda. H&W Control developer works well, too. I've got one of those steel reels, and I could never get 16 mm film into the thing. I made a tank out of ABS drain pipe, with a sealed core that lets me use only 2 ounces of developer.

Rather than the hairspray/vaseline on the filter trick, you could go with another old school move and use pantyhose which will definitely give you a more consistent result across the frame. Just getting/using a stronger diffusion or soft focus filter made for the job might be your best choice though. Hasselblad had a set of 3 “Softar” filters and that is THE look of all of the cheesy 80’s glamour portraits you’ve ever seen. I would love to find a way to get them out of those bayonet mounts and into typical threaded filter mounts I could use with pretty much any other lens because they are perfect for that look IMO. Ultimately if you just want the look of a film with no antihalation layer, I would just try to find another b&w film that doesn’t have one? There has to be more, I’m sure of it. Like, X-ray films (washi F) would definitely have this look in spades. Or just try to pull process another film, as even film with an AH layer will still bloom when overexposed. Maybe TMAX 3200 shot @ 400 or faster might do the trick, it definitely has the grain!
@atticdarkroom
@atticdarkroom 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was meaning to try pantyhose but ran out of time. Another film someone recommended was Agfa Copex Rapid. No anti halation layer and has some marginal sensitivity into the near IR. That sounds promising.

@@atticdarkroom I’ve never tried copex rapid, been meaning to but it seems like it’s always out of stock anytime I’ve considered adding it to my cart. looks like B&H actually has some now though so maybe this is the right time to make it happen! (While I have you here, I’ll just throw out another wacky idea for an unrelated experiment… FPP has a unique 0.8 ISO film that somehow produces positives in standard B&W chems. Will you get negatives if you process it as reversal? Can the positives be trichromed IRL??)

You noted that HIE's lack of a remjet layer is what causes its highlight bloom. Since other black and white films don't have a remjet layer to remove, could you achieve the same effect by using a white pressure plate? If white diffuses the light to much, perhaps a glossy black pressure plate? BTW I love the experimental nature of this channel.

You can remove the anti-halation layer on any film by soaking and drying it in the dark before shooting, to get the same blooming effect on the highlights. This is easiest on sheet film but possible with 135 and 120 film too. You just need a large and light tight drying space.

I just got a roll of HIE in a lot I bought. I got an 87B filter to shoot infrared. In the datasheet they say HIE with 87B filter should be shot at 200 ISO. Considering the film is expired (by my guess maybe 15-30 years), should I shoot it at 400 or even 800? What would be your educated guess there?
@atticdarkroom
@atticdarkroom Жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. Rating expired film depends on how the film was stored over the years, without knowing how it was kept it'll be a crapshoot. If you have multiple rolls I'd suggest shooting a test roll and figuring out the exposure that way. But it might sound like you only have one roll, in which case I'd suggest starting at 200 or 400 (then take into account the filter factor of the 87b filter), shoot and bracket a few frames, and then develop the strip. Figure out which exposure was good and then shoot the rest of the roll. It's more involved but it would give you the best chance of getting usable images. Or you can just wing it.

My best results were on a sunny day shot at 400. On a very bright day, shooting foliage in direct sunlight at 400 caused everything to be overexposed. So in certain overly bright situations I should've underexposed by a stop or so. But with that said your film might be different depending on age and how it was kept over the years. The rolls I managed to get was from a photographer who stored all their film in a fridge, so my results may be different from yours. I'm not sure if you have multiple rolls from the same batch and are willing to shoot a test roll, if not I'd suggest maybe shooting a few test frames before committing to shooting the whole roll. If that's not possible, then I'd bracket your shots.

@@atticdarkroom Sadly I just have the one roll and I'm not sure about cutting and testing (don't have the facilities for that) so looks like bracketing will be the best bet. It expired in 96, I got it from a friend who probably didn't know what he had and it wouldn't have been stored correctly by him and I have no clue about where it came from. I think I will follow your approach of 400 and bracket and hope for the best. You said you used an R72 filter didn't you? Thanks for the advice!

I have a question about developing HIE in a tank. Can you develop it in a daylight tank in the light or do you have o pour the chemicals in in complete darkness? Also when's the expired Kodak D-76 and fixer video coming out?
@atticdarkroom
@atticdarkroom 2 жыл бұрын
I developed it in a Paterson tank and it came out ok. Although it was in a dimly lit room. Although I wonder would happen if you develop under an IR heat lamp. And I'll eventually get around to the expired D-76 sometime. I just have to mix up a batch. I just hate mixing up powered chemistry.

Try using nylons (pantyhose) in black and/or white. It makes a great soft focus filter, and the softness will vary with the aperture adjustments. The black and white colors will pass al colors (for the most part) equally

I feel like you might benefit from a half frame camera when doing these kinds of experiments. The grain is larger comparatively, but you get twice the number of exposures. More chances to mess around

I do have a half frame camera somewhere. It would've made a ton of sense shooting the exposure tests on half frame and then shooting everything else on regular 35mm. I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time I do something like this. Thanks!

@@atticdarkroom Does anyone make a half frame with fully manual controls? I had an Olympus PEN of some sort a while back that I inherited from my in-laws. Shot a couple of rolls through it, but it was auto exposure with no overrides, and I didn't love half frame enough to keep it when it was worth as much as like 10 rolls of film ;)

Could you recreate the look by removing the remjet layer on Rollei Super Pan or Ilford SFX like when you develop motion picture film in c41?

In theory removing the anti halation layer should cause the highlights to bloom. I just need to experiment with antihalation removal techniques.

Isn't the anti halation between the emulsion an the base on photography film, though? Remjet on a cine film is on the back, so you can just wash it off

Any thoughts on Santa color 100? Have you backed the campaign? Or in Kodak Aerocolors infrared capabilities? If you haven't heard about Santa color 100 then this comment is late because the indiegogo campaign only has 8 or 7 hours left.

I'm pretty sure it's the same film as Silberra Color 100, they seem to have the same characteristics and look about the same. If they are both indeed Aerocolor I wouldn't think it has any IR capabilities, but maybe worth trying. With that said I did back the project. I'll have to see if they are indeed the same film.

Shot Rollei and Adox IR films this summer and what I found out with 720nm filters: if sunny, overexpose 2-3 stops from regular metered light, if overcast/shadows - 3-4 stops. Gives nicely exposed results every single time :) This approach could serve you getting something out of your HIE too.

I have a dumb idea that i think you're going to like. What will happen if you bulk load two layers of film together in a cartridge and shoot it, try all the combination like color film layer and bw film layer in one roll or redscale color film layer and bw film layer in a roll or two layer of color film both normal and redscale too.
