Hong Kong neon lights guide 👉 bit.ly/3XreCwS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During my time in Hong Kong, I couldn't miss the chance to see and photograph some of the city's iconic neon lights. Naturally, I wanted to shoot on film, and for me, there's no better choice than Kodak Vision 3 500t. So, I loaded up my Leica M6 and set out to capture the magic.
Of course, I also took some shots with the Leica Q3 since I had it with me.
See you soon in the next one!

I’ve been saying for a long time that Kodak 5219 (500t) is my favorite stock. I bulk load it and it’s cheaper than anything else you can buy. I absolutely love that film

Too bad about the weather. Some great images captured nonetheless. You may want to go and see the recently released Hong Kong movie “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”. It is set in 1980s Hong Kong and is about the Kowloon Walled City. Several awesome scenes of 1980s Hong Kong neon-filled streets included

@@therealsirrobin Recently tried 250D for portraits for the first time... awaiting results. Used plenty 250D for other stuff, but if it can get anywhere close to Portra for portraits I'll be a happy man

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM15qKR92pbbhKM.html A glimpse of the old HK neon light scene back in the day. When I first go to Chinatown in Bangkok, the neon light that kinda reminds me of the scene I witnessed myself when I was younger. (Not as good as the video above, more like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esqgeLyr28-coH0.html )

And by the way, those outdoor karaoke booths are kind of a weird combination of local heritage and an invasion of foreign culture. These kinds of booths, while rarely seen in other parts of HK in the past, have been part of the special scene of the Temple Street for a very long time. However many of these booths are now run by people coming from China. And many others like them brought these kinds of public karaoke to other parts of HK which became a very unwelcoming phenomenon to local people because of the noise and the very distinct musical taste that is far from what most HK people appreciate.

Just curious as to why the neon lights are being faded out. I have had neon lights made, they're not cheap but there are craftsman out there. Interested in why they are being eliminated.

It's mainly because of government policy. They view these large shop signs as potential public safety hazards during typhoons. Some shop signs are not well maintained, and some were even left unattended by the shop owners and property owners, as no one was willing to pay for the removal or maintenance after the shop went out of business. Instead of regulation that promotes better maintenance and ensures accountability regarding these integral parts of the cityscape and the city's visual identity, the bureaucratic government, which has no regard for the local culture and heritage, decided to impose strict laws that discourage owners from keeping their signage. They are required to get structural engineers to sign off on the safety of the signage and have these documents regularly updated. Costs for the business to keep maintaining these signs therefore become unjustifiably high. Shop owners therefore have to remove or replace the old signs with smaller ones to avoid such costs. In the eyes of government officials, instead of working out policies that can help preserve the cityscape, it's better to eliminate the source of this complexity altogether. So that they don't have to worry about the potential safety threat, and they don't have to do extra work to facilitate the regulation and maintenance. They even have a webpage dedicated to showing how successful are they in removing these shop signs ( www.bd.gov.hk/en/building-works/signboards/index_signboards_notice.html ). Yes, there's government that takes pride in demolishing their own culture. But what's funny is after they found out tourism in HK is in serious recession, they started to make fake neon light signs as tourist attractions. Most of the neon images look washed out and grainy. If it is Kodak's best film stock something went terribly wrong. The shot of the guy reading the paper, however, looks great.
