Hi Kody. I just subscribed and am going to watch all of your other video's. I live in England, near London I make builtin furniture for people. I used to cut panels the same way you do with the straight edge clamped but then i bought the Makita track saw. It changed my life. No more measuring for the base plate each time. Just stick the guide down straight on the cut line and bam. You don't even need to clamp it. Best tool I ever bought after my multi-tool.

I would love to see a video showing how to do the installation of the included Ikea toe kicks with the plastic legs. This is how I plan to do it in my house. I love the custom bases that you do, but I am replacing cabinets because of a leaky back door that rotted out the bases of my old cabinets. Since that happened I am paranoid about water and like the fact that the Ikea stock solution completely isolates the floor from the cabinet with plastic that can't be damaged by water. Thanks for the series. It will be invaluable when I begin the installation.

Any idea on how to protect the bottom of the side panel to prevent it to get wet in case of spilled water?
@uptokode2 жыл бұрын
1. Try to keep a factory edge to the floor. Silicone that for extra protection. If the factory edge is not possible then I would seal the cut with primer and even a coat of paint after that. Then install the panel. Then silicone the perimeter.

Plumb and level then scribe back and bottom, cut from bottom and plane then use a sealer to seal bottom. Lol, you predicted you were gonna mess it up?? Next time let TIM do it!! 😜 And use a saw sled to cut length so you ride the bigger piece of wood. Planer works good too! Lol

I’m installing the fridge panel soon and thinking about matching the bottom of the panel with the bottom of the base cabinet instead of running it to the floor. I’ll fasten to the base cabinet with maybe 6 screws from inside the base cabinet and maybe even pl premium the panel to the base cabinet. Do you think the plastic legs on the base cabinet will support the weight? It will also be screwed to the upper cabinet over the fridge in addition to the cabinet on the other side of fridge panel. BTW, I’m using the rail system. Thanks.

So is anything holding the left panel in place at the bottom? Presumably the panel will get caulked at the wall, maybe the floor as well? Is that all that's holding it straight in place at the bottom?

I tried to buy an IKEA base cabinet, but I did not follow their store process so left empty handed. I am not sure what the process is, but it is definitely not just go in and buy the cabinet you picked on the website. As I wondered through the picking area, I realized that these are really expensive cabinets considering that they are made of nothing but particle board. In fact, I think everything in the entire store is made of particle board and nothing but particle board.
@Katred12u3 жыл бұрын
The more expensive cabinets have quite a bit of particle board too, and not near as many features. We have a mix of Ikea and kraftmaid in our kitchen. It appears the only way to get all wood cabinets is to build then yourself or have them built.
@robochibi3 жыл бұрын
The Ikea cabinets come with plinths and legs. Why do we need to create custom wooden base for the cabinets?
@uptokode3 жыл бұрын
Far far easier to get all cabinets level. Far more stable and secure. But of course it doesn’t have to be done my way either. Do what you think is best.

What is the purpose of the 20" filler panels on either side of the overhead cabinet, between the cabinet and the gable panel? Is it because the gable panels are not 3/4"? Seems like the gable panel could mount directly to the cabinet? Also, was the lower cabinet out farther than the upper cabinets, due to it being pulled out of the out of square corner? If so how did you accommodate the difference?
@CanadianHardwoodPro5 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering the same thing. Why did he double the panels on the sides? Perhaps the fridge was too wide for that cabinet?
@imacfunk5 жыл бұрын
At about the 20 minute mark he explains that he wants a slight gap on either side of the fridge which is about 36 inches, the same width as the cabinet. So by adding the side panels he creates the small space on either side of the fridge.
@loki1120004 жыл бұрын

Hi Kody, any suggestion for high ceili ng? Do i butt to gables together? On Cabinet at the top? Imea plan seems to suggest a 26 x 36 panel at the bottom? One side is exposed like in your video would i join with flat brackets?
@uptokode Жыл бұрын
I would butt panels together. I would suggest putting the seam down low OR up high (whatever you think is least noticeable). You could consider the 36x96 panel with a 26x36. It all depends how many tall ones you need and which panel configuration makes for the least waste while maintaining factory edges that are visible.

I have done this by adding the desired thickness of framing in behind the cabinets and then mount the cabinet to this framing. Is that enough info?
@mauricepascoe88435 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of framing a “box” but not sure if I should use 2x4’s or 2x3’s and making 2 - top and bottom and relying on the 3x8 cover panels to take some of the “weight” Thanx a bunch for your videos Kody

My side panels are bowing out in the middle. Any ideas on how to fix this? One panel has full 24 inch depth base and an upper cabinet next to it. The other side only has a shallow depth base and an upper next to it. The outward bow in the center of panel is worse on the one panel with the shallow base next to it. Its worse towards the front edge since there is nothing to screw it to except at the top where the fridge cabinet is and the L bracket on floor on one side. But both panels bow outward in their center. Any ideas on how to fix or minimize?

Hi Kody. Thanks very informative. How do you finish off the top of the fridge cabinet? Do you just leave it as is?
@SR988894 жыл бұрын
Kody, would you install a floating floor underneath the fridge panels, or around the panels but still under the fridge itself? We don't want to install the floating floors under the cabinets due to expanding/contracting.
@kylemartos19374 жыл бұрын
Use cabinet shoe moulding (scribe moulding if not available) around the base of your panels and toekicks. You can also use Quarter round the floor manufacturer has, but often it won't look as clean. This can help secure the base of your fridge panel/gable to level as well. If you want to keep your warranty, install it in and around it. It doesn't truly matter for these panels because of the lack of weight. It takes a lot to make a decent floating floor buckle. If you have laminate I wouldn't even think about putting it underneath cabinets. (Tip: Water-Resistant doesn't mean Water-Proof, resistant doesn't matter once water gets under/around it.) If you have a mid-high quality Luxury Vinyl, then it becomes grey. Almost no floating floor will have a warranty if floor is installed under it too, but most of the time won't buckle if you let it settle ideally 3 days after and then install your WALL MOUNTED cabinets. (Some cabinets have the toe base separate from the rest of the cabinet. If it's separate, floating floor should not be installed underneath no matter what.) Islands/peninsulas would have to be glued down and minimally screwed if at all. Even if you use stone countertops 99% of the time your floating floor wont buckle if done with the right precautions, but it's easier to just void warranties and just say no than hope everyone can be that patient. Make of it what you will. I personally prefer installing it under whenever possible for a much more sleek look that'll also help protect subfloors from water damage. The real factor is what the warranty actually covers for 20 years haha.

I literally can't find any bridging cabinets that are anywhere near as deep as yours is.. the deepest I can find is around 380mm which won't come anywhere near the front of my end panels and won't look flush with the doors when finished, Any ideas?

Hi again Kody! Well my IKEA kitchen is almost done, my fridge cabinet looks great (thanks for your suggestion). Now I’ve selected IKEA’s Kysekil wall panels as a backsplash and I have to select an adhesive. Lysekil panels are as you may know are melamine so I think I will give one side a light sanding to improve adhesion but what glue do you suggest? They’re going right on newly primed drywall. Thanks again in advance!
@uptokode5 жыл бұрын
A light sand is never a bad idea. As for adhesive...check with a flooring company. They have the good stuff. Or use something similar to adhesive for a shower surround. I’m not an expert on adhesives so please double check.

Kody, I have a 103 inch high kitchen and put double cabinets to reach to the top. The IKEA side panels don't reach that high so I am looking for suggestions. I am calculating to cut the panels to the top height of the bottom cabinet, so the seams blend in together as best as possible. Somebody at IKEA suggested that seems should go low so they are not as noticeable, which I cannot disagree. However, I think that there would be a loss of strength without a full panel from the floor to the first cabinet above the refrigerator. Like your video, my refrigerator is at the end of the cabinets, so that end panel is the real challenge. I was thinking of using biscuit joints to meld the two 96 inch panels together at the cut, or joint the factory finishes and have the cuts at the top and bottom. Ideas? Thank you.
