Hello,
In this episode, I will show how setup the governor linkages and electric system on Kohler twin cylinder engine. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me and I will be happy to answer your questions.

Very good overview, thank you. The kohler manual has so many variations and don't show the linkages in detail - and yours matched mine.

I've adjusted my governor exactly like you explained but my engine still runs wide open. I have to shut it off or it will blow up! Governor gear maybe? And thank you for these videos. I've been searching for 2 years for a video on a horizontal Kohler twin.

Have you checked to see if the problem is with the carburetor or the linkages between the governor and the carburetor? You can disconnect the linkage to the carburetor and start your engine and see if you can idle/accelerate the engine this way. If everything is okay, then apply pressure on the governor rod and see if the pressure changes as you accelerate the engine. If it doesn't, then you may have a problem with the governor inside the engine. Please be safe while you are working with any type of engine. If you have any more questions please let me know.

To turn on/off the full. The solenoid must be energized to allow the engine to run.

I have kohler command pro 22 horse on a old Snapper that’s been driving me crazy I can’t get the engine properly tuned and get it to rev up and down like she’s supposed to. We replaced the governor gear inside, thinking that was the problem but she still runs with a mind of her own running with Rpm’s all over the place going up and down. The other day she rvd up to 4200 rpm’s and we don’t know why. Keep thinking it has something to with the carb or the linkages for throttle. Just can’t be the actual governor gear because it did it with the old one and it’s still doing with the new one and it’s been very stressing hope you can help me out on this,because we even took throttle spring off just to get the carburetor to close all the way it’s been a big mess 🤦🏻‍♂️

If you are 100% sure the governor and lineages are good, then it is most likely the carburetor. Is your engine setup similar to the one I showed in the video?

Yess it is,set up is the same to what you have shown in the video. Yeah she’s got a new governor and oil pump on there new lifters two. We adjusted the governor three times trying to figure out what’s up. At first the throttle flap in the carb wasn’t closing all the way when we would throttle the engine down. Causing her to go from idle to 4200 RPMs,we disconnected the throttle spring that the throttle linkage runs through off of the governor lever to remove tension soo the carburetor will close all the way when throttle lever is lowered all the way down just to get the engine to go back into idle. Even still she doesn’t have a steady idle she’s starts at 12 to 1500 hundred rpm’s witch isn’t bad but then goes up to 2200 hundred rpm’s at idle after running it,witch is kinda high for idle but eventually she slowly slows back down to around 1800 to 15 rpm’s. Also there’s No steady mid engine speed either,she’s super sensitive if you try to run her at mid engine speed. Trying to go up to 36 or 3700 hundred rpm’s or more witch is almost full throttle mowing engine speeds.When I got the blades going I’m trying to run her at good 35 to 36 hundred rpm’s but she still does little more then that I want her to do,she’ll doo 37 to 39 hundred rpm’s with blades going but No more then that because of the load of the blades and everything turning thank God 🤦🏻‍♂️. It’s been a very stressful journey we changed a lot on the throttle plate nut bolt and washers just to make sure everything is working for the mechanical governor. Took that throttle spring off just to get her go back into idle what a nightmare.Idk it has us beat,do you really think that the carb would have the engine run at such odd speeds?? Let me know what you think my next step should be thanks 🙏.

Adjusting the governor and carburetor on this engine should be easy and no more than 15 minutes job. I actually made this video because I helped a few guys in the past setting up the governor/carburetor after they changed the carburetor or other parts and they usually get confused and giving up. So I made this video to help. Please remember, the governor's job is to maintain a set RPM. The linkages and springs must be set correctly for the governor to work. First make sure the carburetor/engine is working correctly. You can disconnect the governor linkages, fix the choke to the open position, hold the throttle in the close position and start the engine (make sure you and if someone is helping are safe. Working close to this engine may result in injury 🤕) the engine should start at idle and should maintain idle. Next: increase the threshold by little and hold, the RPM should get higher and stabilize as long as you can hold the throttle in the same position. If this is the case, then your engine is assembled correctly and your carburetor is working correctly. If not, let me know what the problem is. I have another video showing how I rebuilt this engine, please watch it and make sure you set the timing correctly and whatever else you changed. What you described could be: 1- The engine is not assembled correctly. 2- bad carburetor. Or the carburetor needs to be cleaned and adjusted. 3- wrong governor linkages/spring adjustment.

Can the governor be eliminated for tractor pulling? Yes I’m aware it might over rev. But I’m asking if it can be simply deleted?

Yes you can, actually a lot of people do that when they use this type of engine for small race cars. You just need to make sure to spring load the carburetor to hold on low RPM and you accelerate when you press the accelerator. However for tractor use, I highly recommend to keep the governor.

If you want to eliminate the governor, you have to re configure the throttle lineages to make them like any car carburetor lineages. You must have a spring to force the carburetor to the idle position and the linkages will accelerate the carburetor position. Once again: if this is for a tractor, generator, water pump, pressure washer and other systems that require a study RPM for torque changes then leave the governor functional. Disabling the governor is easy, just disconnect the linkages between the governor and carburetor. May I ask why you want to disable the governor?
