Well, they say timing is everything...I got my generator up and running a week ago and had my first power outage last night...this thing works as advertised!
In the middle of the night we heard a crack of thunder that shook the house, and my internal organs, and then i saw my iphone screen come on and it wasn't charging...a few seconds later power indicator came right back on, AC kept running, house operated per usual. Woke up this morning with line power and the generator off. Pretty stoked on this setup!
The Kohler Power website is a little tough to navigate, so here is direct link to the residential section:
kohlerpower.com/en/residentia...
I went with the 20kW whole home gen with Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and OnCue monitoring.
The ATS is key because that is the 'automatic' part of this whole thing. Without, you are going out in the storm to go start your generator manually - no thank you.
The OnCue I didn't talk about in the video because the cable is on back order at the moment, but this allows me to connect the generator to the internet and monitor all sorts of usage stats from my phone. Once that is hooked up I'll do another video on that and my updated thoughts on this unit.
Here is another helpful link if you wanna get an idea of cost...the kohler generator sizer on their website asks you a bunch of questions and then based on your answers lets you know what size gen you need...

I just installed the Kohler 20KW RCA here on the ranch in Montana. I am learning the process that happens during startup between the Grid & my Grid tied Solar System. My heart stopped when my new 10,000 watt Solar System shut down. And failed to restart after the generator fired up. I found out the Microverters @ the panels shutdown to protect themselves. An hour later they resumed operation as usual. Smart technology is always nice to have.

Love your enthusiasm. I know the feeling lol. I have an old Onan 12.5 kw (from the 80's) Just bought the 200 amp Kohler auto transfer switch because my old Onan one went bad. I've been fighting with that old generator a yr now . I am purchasing the Kohler 20kw next week like you have. I can't wait ! I will have that same smile when mine is going again . Any guy who has been in these shoes knows that excitement lol glad I'm not only one. Good vid brother .

My stepfather has always had one or two portables as long as I can remember. We always had one camping, just in case. And completely handy when my parents returned home after the Paradise fires. Your is awesome. Power out, generator kicks in. So cool. Wait till you really need it!! Everything is coming together. Very happy for you, Jacey and Rossi!!

Back up gens are great. I had one in my last house, but now I can't get one for months for my new house. Apparently COVID has production all screwed up. I ordered it a couple weeks ago and it will be here in Dec. Just wondering how long it took you to get yours ordered and to arrive? Fortunately I don't lose power as often as you do, but when it does go out, it's nice to know it will be back on within 15 seconds. Just to have it in your vid, he probably should've mentioned it also does a self test once a week to make sure everything is in proper working order so you know it will work when you need it. Great vid Anthony. It's fun to see you get so excited about back up power.

I just got a Kohler standby Gen hooked up yesterday and so it was great to see a walk through like you guys did for us! Are you going to test it every year under load for an extended period? Thanks for the video!
@CarrinoAnthony
@CarrinoAnthony Жыл бұрын
Mother Nature gives this generator all the testing it needs; it kicks on at least once a month for a hours when the power goes out. That said, the generator has what is called an 'Exercise Cycle' - its a setting that you program for the generator to turn on automatically and run for a bit at a set interval to ensure all is working properly. I have mine set to exercise once a week for 20 minutes. Hope that helps!
@riversgunkingdom5360
@riversgunkingdom5360 Жыл бұрын
@@CarrinoAnthony That's true and now that I think about it I lose power to my house at least 6 times a year and at least once a year I lose power for 2-3 hours. Also mine is set to exercise for 20 mins once a week. Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks. I am learning from each video I watch. One concern is it appears the engine turns over a long period of time as compared to a zero turn mower before it starts
@menkengenerators
@menkengenerators 29 күн бұрын
On gasoline engines the fuel is already at the carburetor. Natural & LP gas takes a few extra seconds compared to gasoline, The suction from the engine opens the regulator, Then it travels through 18 inches of hose. This gives the engine oil about 2 to 3 seconds to circulate before engine steps up to full speed. This is better for the engine.

Dude is quite a character. That generator is wonderful peace of mind. Did you ever think of doing solar out there?
@CarrinoAnthony
@CarrinoAnthony 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Sandy was great 😂 I did have solar planned, but budget and timing didn’t allow for at the moment. I have a conduit run for it, and my plan is when I do a new roof (2-3yrs) I want to do a standing seam and will add solar at that time. 🤙🏼

@@CarrinoAnthony I have lived w solar for 32 years, it's the way, you'll see. but I might suggest doing or at least looking into a ground-mount rack system. much much simpler than on the roof, easier to clean, and you can set the angles much easier than changing your roof !

Use high zinc oil like Amsoil oil small engine oil do not use automobile oil people will say you can but Air cooled engines require alot more zinc and phosphorus than car oil especially LP and NG engines full synthetic

to Anthony : did you use large diameter wire when the the generator was installed ?

Looking to buy a generator now. Why Kohler and not Generac or Cummings? Just curious. Also is there a voltage loss with the generator so far from your home?
@CarrinoAnthony
@CarrinoAnthony Жыл бұрын
For my money, I like the reliability of Kohler. No experience with Cummings. Have heard some horror stories on Geneerac. No voltage loss. 20kW runs the whole home flawlessly.

How is the generator doing? Any issues? Do you still recommend Kohler?
@CarrinoAnthony
@CarrinoAnthony Жыл бұрын
Running like a champ. Definitely recommend. Only thing I’d do differently next time around would be to set the generator on 8” block and then paint it with that special paint (name is escaping me right now). Had a few nice get in there.

Question the installer said if you use it for 4 days then he has to come out why does he half to come out for. Thanks
@CarrinoAnthony
@CarrinoAnthony Жыл бұрын
He meant if it runs for 4 days straight, so that would be 96 operating hours. You typically want to service your generator every 100 operating hours or so. And for context, my generator usually kicks on for a few hours at a clip when we lose power, but we do have the occasional multi-day outage, so the reality has been, at least for me, its typically a once a year service, but in the event that the generator is working overtime for me then I call for an additional service. Hope that helps!
