Nitrate in Koi ponds is often overlooked but it can be just as damaging as Ammonia and Nitrite if left unchecked and allowed to build up to high enough levels. In this video I cover what Nitrate actual is, where it comes from and how it comes to be in our ponds, the ideal levels to aim for and the levels at which it becomes dangerous, the symptoms to look for that indicate a problem with high Nitrate, and advice and tips on how to lower it and keep it low.

Continuous replacement is good on reducing labor but it wastes ALOT more water. Because your changing it from batch kinetics to CMFR kinetics. The effluent concentration of nitrate is that of the target concentration in the pond rather than the maximum allowable concentration. Also question, by what mechanism is saturated O2 conc supposed to reduce the amount of nitrate present? NO3 is the fully oxidized form...

Hello again, i always have some levels of nitrate no matter how much i clean. The only time i remember having 0 is when i first started up my pond.1000 gal. I have a canister filter rated for 9000L a DIY shower filter with bakki media and because my wife liked how it looks a filter urn good for 500gal. Which i added extra biohome media to.

Hi mate, I think zero is very difficult to achieve as its constantly being produced but if you can run around 40 or 50ppm that's a good start.

"I would do it more if I could" -- yessir, this is the main benefit of the easypod automatic. I achieve roughly the same thing as your trickle in/out system using a 2x/day automatic easypod cleaning and a float valve with a 2 gallons per hour irrigation drip emitter (also on a 1,000 gallon system with 9 young koi). So I'm not continuous overflow... rather I flush the filter and then take several hours to replace the lost volume. The only reason I don't refill faster is to avoid a problem in the event of the float valve failing (float valve + drip emitter is a redundant safeguard to prevent too much city water from being added to my pond at once).

Sounds like a great setup mate. I love the idea of cleaning the Pod out twice a day too, I would do that if I had the time. Maybe I need an automatic Pod 😁👍

I have built an Anoxic bed into my system, and my Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrites are down to virtually zero and it has only been running for 2 months. All I have is a Bakki type shower, and the Anoxic bed fed via a sieve. My fish have never looked so well and are more active than they were. My pond is quite heavily stocked for its size, but the fish are blooming at the moment.

Hi Mick. That sounds like a great system. I always associated the koi's appetite and activity boost from a bakki shower to the effect the shower has on the water but the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to think that the secret to the appetite in particular is getting the nitrate level down (which the shower does) and as such you can get the same effect by other means such as yours. Interesting stuff 👍

@@DazzleKoi I’ve never let my nitrate go above 10 because above 10 it could be 10-20 as the colour chart looks the same for 10 and 20. My koi have never lost any appetite. They are always hungry; wish I can feed them more. Never had to treat for parasites. I feed relatively very little, never clean my bio, and do trickle ins of 30-40% per week. My pond is only 1500 US gallons with 5 large original koi I’ve grown here. I’m going to look at anoxic filters or showers in the future. Cheers.

Another good informative vid mate... My Nitrate has always been in the 60-80 range since my filter matured a couple of months ago and as yourself no plants in the pond. So what are your thoughts on placing a couple of plants (potted) in my Filter system to soak some Nitrate up? If you've seen my filter system on my videos, I was thinking about on the sponge section? Was going to trial video it if its got some legs? Cheers, ANDY...

Hi Andy, I think thats definitely a good idea. Its basically as Mick below has built, an anoxic bed. If you type 'anoxic bed filter' in to google and then go google images, the first picture is the kind of thing you are looking at if your system allows. If not you might have to work out another way of doing it but the principle is the same. I'll have a look at your system now 👍

Oioi dazla. I put the nt labs kh up in 2 dose of 500g over the weekend and its pushed the pond up from zero to 3 dkh.. I took your advice and and halved the amount recommended in one hit. I'm guessing now another 500 grams tomorow then after that its little and often to keep it stable. Also got my pond covers made so I'm made up . 😁👍

@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Franco, no using a cover wont increase ammonia or nitrite. It is all dependent on how much food you give your koi. If you fit a cover make sure there is a gap somewhere for gases to escape 👍

Hello, could drum filter reduce nitrate level in-directly? Also, have you ever used any other ceramic-based media like Marine pure before to reduce Nitrate? Thank you
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, a drum filter wont reduce nitrate, no. You need very specific conditions for anaerobic bacteria to live and breed and those conditions are not present in a drum filter. They wont grow in plastic media either, you basically need a habitat void of oxygen. I have a lot of detail on it in the shower videos on my channel. Have a watch of this one if you get chance and then there are several others on building your own shower and one specifically on media where I review many different shower medias 👍👍 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jc9lZbRyyrK8gGw.html

Yes mate, nitrate causes algae growth but it does also suppress appetite if it gets to high so its a good idea to keep it as low as possible.

Does a trickle shower help reduce nitrates?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, have a look at my videos on showers, this is the first one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jc9lZbRyyrK8gGw.html The sort answer is that a trickle tower wont touch nitrate, but a properly functioning bakki shower will remove nitrate. Not all showers are created equal though so if its nitrate removal you specifically want you need to get the right shower. A lot of the filters sold as showers are not actually showers at all

Just got on to your channel daz and it's already helped me alot as I'm new to the hobby. What's your thoughts on clay ?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, great name 😁 I'll be honest I haven't used clay in all my time keeping koi. I'm happy that there are enough minerals in my tap water and I don't show my fish so I'm not concerned with optimising colour etc. I know they can help with fines in your water but I'd rather address the issue with my filter if I have fines, it feels a bit like masking the problem if you use clay for that reason. I know they are very popular so I am going to research and do a video comparing a few different brands but it will likely be in the New Year before I get round to that one 🍻

Haha yeah there is a few more of us mate. Thanks for the reply and look forward for the vid. Last weekend I done a kh test on my pond for the first time . , all my parameters have always been bang on or near anyway. Tested for kh and the water never went blue but straight to yellow , tested the tap water and the same result . Got another test kit and the same again. I have now ordered some kh up . I'm just wandering how much to ad at a time ? My pond is 10k ltr or just a bit more.pond is running off a pump fed nexus 220. Cheers bud 👍
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren. It depends which product you have , I tried to search KH but I found a few different ones. Is it the ntlabs one in a white bag? They should come with instructions but its worth getting a double check. If your tap water is so low you will probably need to get in to a routine of adding a small amount each week and the specific pond products will get a bit expensive then. If thats the case you will want to look in to a source of sodium bicarbonate as its a LOT cheaper and essentially the same stuff. Let me know which one you have 👍

@@DazzleKoi hi bud. Yeah the nt labs one. I find it a bit odd how the kh is so low but the ph is ok. Well come the weekend I'm going to give it go. Get a pond they said it will be fun they said lol 😁😁 . Cheers for the help and keep the vids coming. 👍

@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah that old chestnut. Unfortunately its never plain sailing, you are better off just visiting someone elses pond when you want to see some koi. You probably know this already but there is an online calculator tool for the product that tells you how much to add dependent on your pond volume. If you haven't seen it link is at the bottom of this message. One thing I would say though is that will tell you the dose to bring the KH up by 3 or 4 Degrees and thats quite a big jump. Id use half dose the first time and recheck the following day. Then you know how it reacts in your system and can go from there. www.ntlabs.co.uk/browse-products/outdoor/koi-care/kh-buffer-up/

Hi Daz, does high nitrate cause fish to flash?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, no, high nitrate isn't an irritant or anything like that so it wont cause them to flash. In very extreme high levels it could cause an issue but its unrealistic that you could get the levels high enough unless you had a pollutant getting in there some how.

Can you recommend a good kio fish food?
@DazzleKoi
@DazzleKoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I always recommend Saki Hikari foods if your budget stretches to their prices. They are made with top quality ingredients and have everything your koi will ever need. They are not filled with high levels of protein from the wrong sources so you don't get that brown tint to your water that you get with other foods. I feed hikari wheatgerm all year round and add a bit of multi season in the summer.
