In the 1970s and 80's, a fusion in jazz music occurred giving birth to a new, more electrified and diverse genre called jazz-funk. Some notable pioneers in this genre were: The Crusaders, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Alphonse Mouzon, Chick Corea, Lee Ritenour, Azymuth, Eumir Deodato, Jeff Lorber, Seawind, and Koinonia.
Though less known in the United States, Koinonia established themselves as a huge sensation in Scandinavia and Western Europe, performing to sell-out crowds from 1982 to 1991 in Norway, Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Their Latin-infused rhythms and upbeat melodies gave them a distinct and cultured sound. Taken from a Greek word used in the Bible to mean "intimate fellowship" Koinonia was notably one of the first Christian, though primarily instrumental, jazz bands. The original members of the band, which formed in 1980, were: (leader) classically trained guitarist, Abraham Laboriel on electric bass guitar, child-prodigy drummer Bill Maxwell, Dean Parks on guitar, Alex Acuña on percussion and drums, Hadley Hockensmith on guitar, Harlan Rogers on keyboards and saxophone/clarinet & flute virtuoso Justo Almario

I cannot believe this band never got enough attention in the U.S., especially in the Christian radio stations during the 80s. Glad I got to discover Koinonia today.

Sadly they were just TOO GOOD. And well, as was said on 'American Bandstand' , "It had a good beat, butt I COULDN'T dance to it". They were so far above the masses comprehension, peoole just didn't want to go to the trouble of comprehending what was HAPPENING when these musicians were playing. The highest compliment I ever recieved, was from Steve Langdon, a monster drummer in my humble opinion, and he said I played like Bill Maxwell. I was stunned!!!! You had to know Steve, be just DIDN'T blow smoke. I didnt share his assessment, but I enjoyed him saying that. 2:21

Even your testimony, as we were watching (my brother is a drummer he comment that you guys are the absolute BEST and even greater than your skill is your anointing or the anointing of God upon your all). My brother said that it is so powerful that during this session he is sure that you were driving out demons that may have had people bind and for that we are grateful

Hadley was a dear friend in the 70-80's OKC, OK. I used to stay on his and Deb's sofa after they moved from OKC to Orange County. Hadley was a fan of Steve Lukather and never admitted how good his own guitar playing was. The most humble person I've ever known. His wife Debbie is a treasure and no one could appreciate their quality and hospitality who has not experienced it. The example of Christ's love for humanity.

Amen , I've been trying to figure out how and where did he come up with strumming the bass like that, and just realized same. it must be his upbringing style like Flamenco Guitarist! Never saw a bass player do this , and none since . Abe is in a class by himself. So Awesome, and him Dancing the dance of joy like David in the Psalms. too awesome. :)

Well well we'll, I look at the date of the recording. Wow we was listening to these giants circa 86/87. And although I never got to see them at all. But we were in awe of the musicianship on this group. But Abraham LABORIEL..... FIRE CAKES 💥💯🥊

Que bendición escucharlos y saber que son hijos de un Rey, quien les dio ese don precioso. Muchas bendiciones.

my friend and I saw you folks play early or mid 80s, i think it was some kind of mall. I stood behind Bill Maxwell, and I remember this song. Everyone in the band seemed to light up a little bit when you played it. Such a well written song, great title. Abraham was always my favorite, watching him do that little strut while he played. Thx for sharing this! I could not play jazz (I tried, but it wasn't as deep as folk and rock in my heart). I'm so glad you shared this!
