Koko and Goliath baby monkey update

Mark takes us around Koko and Goliath, updating us on the progress of the baby monkey introductions. Coco monkey needs eyes checked due to possible snake venom
The Vervet Forest is a wildlife documentary focused on the lives of the monkeys at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa . We join the orphaned and injured vervet monkeys in their adventure and struggles as they battle their way through the foster monkey mom program to become part of a monkey troop again. This channel is for those monkey lovers who enjoy monkeys living their lives as monkeys should.

What a treat! An extra YT video on a Sunday. Thank you 👍. Mark, what skill you have getting Koko out of the cage for his eye flush without getting bitten! Nice to see how immediate the relief was for him. The troop's reaction shows just how thorough and effective the gradual intro technique is for the future well being of the babies and the troop cohesiveness. Great video as always. PS it looks very hot and humid on this day there! 😢 Even more respect for you all working so hard in those exhausting conditions!

Thanks Julie, we don't mess around with eye injuries as it can potentially have long term consequences if not treated quickly. He definitely wasn't happy about the whole ordeal, but it is great to see the protection and support he has from the whole troop. And yes, very toasty in the summer here, regularly 35-40°C!! 🥵

When Koko was released back to the troop and he ran into the woods with his family, a few adults remained behind at the fence to fuss at the humans that dared interfere with Koko. I just love how cohesive the troop is. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

Thanks for the progress report; it’s always nice to catch up with the older ones, and to see a bit of what’s involved with monitoring the monkeys’ wellbeing. Today I learned about spitting cobras and toxic beetles! 💕🐒💕

Thanks for helping koko. Returned to troop, troop upset... said what they do to you koko, you ok? Koko bouncing around says, they're cool, really nice, they helped me, don't worry, it was kinda interesting, i can see again..😅

Great Sunday morning treat! I have a question, which is kind of ridiculous after watching for so many years. Just to get it straight though, is it correct to say that males don't 'belong' to any particular family group, but are instead general protectors of the entire troop they live in? I also have to say how blown away I am when I think about Dave, Josie, Mark, and maybe others, who know the names of 600 or more (!!!!) monkeys!! I mean, Mark was just rattling off each name without any hesitation. I know they each have many things that distinguish them from other monkeys, but it's still incredible!! Glad to see they're all doing well! Many thanks for the video!!

Thank you! Her mother is Maggie Mae, an orphan from around 2015, so she's now about 8-9 years old. We have no idea how it happened, but every now and then nature seems to find a way!

Question: I thought I saw long ago that you didn’t put babies in if the troop had babies. Was this comment just about Camelot (I think the other troop was called) or did I recall incorrectly? Thank you for the video and answering questions. Blessings to you and yours! 😊

Yes but as this was a bit of one-off for Goliath and no one else seemed to be pregnant, we decided to go ahead. Unfortunately it was one of the potential foster-mums, Maggie Mae, who had the baby but thankfully another new foster-mum stepped in. It's also such a large enclosure (0.6 ha) that we can't really afford to not use it every year. You are correct, Camelot have their own babies (a problem we're currently addressing!) so can't be used for foster-mums, but the enclosure is actually so enormous (2.2 ha) that it would be too difficult to monitor the babies anyway so it's probably not an option either way.

We don't know exactly but most likely she either mated through the fence with a wild male, or else a wild male jumped in, had some fun, then got chased out again by the troop males. We try to trap and vasectomise all the wild males that turn up to avoid this happening, but sometimes they're a bit too sneaky!

It seems to me that you are experts, but I cannot imagine how to recognize and distinguish monkeys. They look exactly the same to me; although I looked carefully.

New people here definitely struggle for a while until their brain adapts to the different features of monkeys. Belief it or not, they actually have a high level of variation between individuals - coat colour, length, condition, body shape, height, lots of different facial features, ear shape, just to name some.

Thanks for giving us some background stories to some of the names given to the monkeys. I often wish that you would share with us whenever a name that has a background story came up. It just makes the whole vervet monkey story go a little deeper. 🤍🕊️🤍
