I remember asking my Japanese friend who was doing Japanese Literature at the time about a Japanese classics recommendation, and she insisted that I read one author (Natsume Soseki). But I forgot to keep a note of the name and over time I have forgotten what the name was. I could not go back to the conversation because it was deleted and felt ashamed to ask my friend again because I thought it would've seemed as if I was neglectful (I was only being overdramatic though, she would not mind). I only remember fragments of the name. Now I remember. Finally!! Because of your video. It was Natsume Soseki. Thank you for uploading!! I love Japanese classics.

I have lived my entire life in Japan, but I was never into reading before until I started reading books in English. When I read Kokoro, (I tried reading it in Japanese but the old writing style was a little too difficult for me as a teenager) I was so intrigued because I had never read a book that was more Japanese than this. It captured the environment of my life here so it was emotionally gripping for me. I had a hard time reading the last ten pages since I felt something that I cannot describe.

I loved this entire video. The history lesson and the excerpt from one of Soseki’s lectures brought a great layer to the video. I read the novel for a class with Japanese students while I was in Japan. As a 21st Century westerner, it was really difficult to get past the way women are viewed in the novel. However, I loved how full of life the narrator is. One of the ladies in my class who studied Japanese Classics made a theory that Sensei’s wife was actually manipulating the plot! I wish I still had her paper because it blew my mind!

I didn't know that it was popular (and the best selling novel in Japan) since I just came across it at the back of my university library. You're insights are really great and informative as well (the economic background especially). I agree with how "romantic" the relationship seemed at first with sensei and the narrator lol I almost thought it was BL.

I think the loneliness that sensei describes becomes clear in the second part. There's this issue between family piety and individualism where even his familial duties conflict with his families desire for him to be successful which also conflicts with his desire to simply figure things out for himself. This conflict confines the narrator when he's with his parents which makes him miss sensei. He has no one to be honest with.

I loved Kokoro so much --it also really piqued my interest in this time period of Japanese history. I've been enjoying your Japanese literature content so much, your thoughtful details about the surrounding history and culture are great to listen to. Maybe I can recommend Fumiko Enchi and Yūko Tsushima as two great women Japanese writers if you haven't read them and they seem interesting to you. hey :) first of all, I totally like your outfit /style! it's so cute! + I love flamingos, they are my favorite animals, so that is also a plus :D I am really interested in Japanese and Asian literature in general. I also studied Korean studies at university, so there are often crossovers to Japan naturally 😊 Thank you for recommending the book and providing so much information surrounding it! I agree that context is so important, when it comes to fully enjoying a classic like that. I have never read anything from Natsume Soseki before, but now I really want to check him out! The 'I am a cat' novel also sounds really interesting! Also thank you for linking the Soseki project, I will go and check it out now! 😌

thank you for your review! i've been meaning to reading Kokoro for ages and i hope to get to it soon. I love that you provided the author's biography and broader historical context of that time. Love your review (and your outfit, it's very cute!)

Love japanese authors, but usually I read the modern ones like Murakami, Hiromi Kawakami, Banana Yoshimoto and Sayaka Murata. Oh and I also read lots of mangas. Everytime I think about reading some jp classics they seem to be about older man lusting after young girls or married people having affairs, so I never get to them. But I hope to try I am a cat soon. Great video (and lovely outfit)

Oh I didn't know that! I have read three modern classics so far and all were not about that haha 😂 Also I love Sayaka Murata's work! Her upcoming novel Earthlings is really good (but also really strange and at times uncomfortable lol)

@@TheArtisanGeek guess it's just an impression then. here in brazil I always look at Yasunari Kawabata's books and they seem all about love affairs... also Junichiro Tanizaki. But I'll look harder and stop judging lol

Thank you for such an enjoyable video! Kokoro is one of my favourite Japanese classics and I was intrigued to hear you recite portions of the translated text as I read it in Japanese and always wondered how it reads in English. I think this book really expresses the Japanese psyche well, which of course still exists as the undercurrent to modern-day Japanese society. I always recommend this book to anyone who asks about Japanese literature or culture 😊
