Kolb Firefly - Crosswind Takeoff and Landing

11 жыл бұрынThis is the second flight in my Experimental Kolb Firefly. Winds were variable at 7 knots (mostly 45 to 60 degrees cross). I almost didn't fly, but decided to go for it. The plane was a bit of a handful in the wind, at least for a second flight in a new airplane. It gave me a workout, but the flight was ultimately a good experience.

Good looking 'Fly. You might think about tying your brake cables up in such a way to ensure that they do not get snagged and pulled by an errant branch or grass clump; having one of the brakes suddenly applied when you least expect it can really mess up your day.

Looks like loads of fun. How many hours did you fly her this Summer? Any other squawks besides the airspeed indicator?

My Kolb does better when the mains touch down first. I try and fly it out more just off the deck, and wait for it. Makes a softer touch down on my Kolb. But each plane is different for sure. Just a thought , Fun & safe Fly'n Bob Ps where do you fly?

That landing was WAY slower than your first one...your first one looked like you were landing downwind...this one you just lofted it down gently. What was your airspeed after flare?

Ranjeet Singhal I didn’t have a working airspeed indicator on the maiden flight, so I don’t know the exact speed. I’m sure it was fast, as I didn’t want to be on the slow side for the first landing. Currently, I fly final approach at about 55 mph. Touchdown speed is in the low 40’s. This plane has some extra goodies that increase the weight and stall speed. I can’t get as slow as the low 30’s that some lighter examples may achieve. 55 may sound fast, but it is a high drag plane and it quits flying rather quickly after the flare.

I find if I come in a little faster and fly right down to the deck, say 12 to 6 inches then, if the wind lets go,( if not I go around again ) And then roll off the throttle to settle it down. Maybe try on the mains at touch down, then as it settles bring the stick back.
