Bosses are often the final test of skill at the end of a level, but I think Koloktos from Skyward Sword serves as something different. Instead of a hearty challenge, he gives the player a change to unwind from the critical thinking needed to complete the Ancient Cistern. What do you think?

Welcome to Daryl Talks Games
Hi! I’m Daryl, and on this channel I explore the intersection between video games, psychology, and real life.
I’ve talked about how Pokemon and the Generation Effect can make you a better student. I’ve made a video on why game developers really should understand functional fixedness. And I’ve interviewed some of the best speedrunners on Earth to find out how exactly they make setting world records look so easy.
Primacy and Recency, subconscious associations, classical conditioning, divergent thinking, amnesia (the disorder not the game), if its psychological concept that relates to games, I’ve probably talked about it before or will in the future. But to be clear, psychology isn’t all I talk about. Every now and then I’ll dabble in a little bit of game design and sometimes I’ll just talk about life and how games really can make it better... and for some people are the best way to relate to the world around us.
So if all that sounds like a good time to you, subscribe to my channel, watch my videos, and if you feel so inclined, show a friend! If you take a look at my videos, I truly hope that you learn something or are entertained and that your day is better after watching!

Zelda games are renowned for having utterly creative character designs, and Koloktos is a prime example. The way he animates between poses that resemble those of multi-armed Eastern gods is so wild and threatening, especially when he brandishes his big honkin' swords. I will praise this series' artistic sensibilities until my dying breath, it never, ever fails to inspire me. Excellent video, you broke the boss fight down very well!

Not quite. One of the challenges whit zelda games is that you can clear them whitouth dying if you prepare enough and pay attention to your enemies weakness. Yes they are easy but the over the top dozens of death that other games incur makes them troublesome. You would ask yourself if the hero deserves the happy ending when it's basically an inmortal. And boy there's satisfaction in clearing a zelda game whitouth dying on the first try.

The big difference between Koloktos and Armogohma is design. Something that this video doesn't bring up is the impact a cool design can have on a player's enjoyment. Did I get frustrated when I had to wait for the weak spot to expose itself when fighting Koloktos? No. I'm actually very used to approaching Zelda bosses slow and methodically, due to the mindset of "just rushing in will get you torn apart in most cases." But did I enjoy tearing Koloktos apart, arm by arm, then breaking through to its weak spot and smashing it? Ohhhhh yes, I most certainly did.

Well said, can't agree more. I picked up one of the art books recently, and I noticed something. Not only does the franchise have a completely unique design for a skeleton (stalfos), an extremely common and often boring game enemy, but the skeleton design are unique _between games in its own series._ The imagination on display never fails to impress me.

This actually gives me an idea for a video game. The whole game is a boss fight, you start at a distance from it, and it’s constantly sending minions and long-range attacks. You have to constantly be on-guard and constantly facing difficulties. The boss is defended by a multitude of defenses spread across a map, and the more of those defenses you destroy, the more capable and powerful you become, and the easier those previous challenges are. You slowly start working your way towards the boss, and in the end you finally get to annihilate your opponent. There’s no grand final encounter, you’ve already overcome the challenge, you’ve already overcome the boss themself, and as such finish them off with almost no effort. Great, now time to learn how to code lol

I remember playing a flash game like this on Kongregate. You are a military commander who increases in rank, and can rescue different types troops in distress on the battlefield who join your squad. You are meant to fail time and time over as you collect more upgrades, allowing you to march. (And make the first part of the journey in a really fast jeep with a certain powerup.) Until you reach the final military base you are meant to destroy.

Surprised this video made no mention of the very distinct audio cue used right before Koloktos strikes in any capacity. It's deliberately eerie, and sets up the tension perfectly for either an evade or a counterattack with the whip. One of my favorite parts of its design.

Great vid (ik I'm late xd) and I have had this feeling happen to me in twilight princess to! You find a mini boss or much more impactful boss and their size and how monstrous they look. Also most every boss has the same 1 2 3 kill like many other Zelda bosses and you have to do little puzzle or task to open up their weak spot and once you do so the game transitions into a high pitched (weak point theme? idk how to call it) beat and as you you slash at the bosses weak point a visual flash comes out overtime you hit it. This may just be me but the epic tone and size that some of the bosses present make these bosses similar to what was described in this video I feel. (idk I just rambled so enjoy it if anyone read through any of it (: )

BotW2 Koloktos Battle: -In the first phase, you're dodging thrown blades, as well as fist smashes. The trick is to use Magnesis to tear off Koloktos' arms one by one, and once down to two, will stop using 2 arms to guard, allowing you to attack. However, once you're able to deal damage, Koloktos will recall its arms, and if you don't get out of the way in time, Koloktos will slam its arms all at once into the ground, creating a devastating shockwave that forces you back. -In the second phase, Koloktos' core is now protected by a cage. The trick is to wait until it throws a sword, then either use Magnesis to drop it on Koloktos, or Stasis to hold the sword in place as you build up force to send it flying into its legs to briefly immobilize it, its arms to disarm it, or its cage to deal damage and allow you to attack it, at least until it recovers. The cage acts as an additional step to being able to damage Koloktos, and unlike the first phase, it has legs to walk around.

I was one of the rare children who didn't enjoy making a mess. Back in preschool, I had trouble sharing blocks with other kids because they couldn't understand how to arrange them in a structurally sound way (a brick pattern), making it impossible for me to make towers that were anywhere near as tall as I could make them be on my own. I did not personally enjoy the Koloktos fight. Perhaps that's related... There was no catharsis. There was just waiting, which always feels like padding to me in a video game, and then there was finishing, followed by "I hope the next dungeon offers something more than this one did". Skyward Sword was the next Zelda game I played after Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess is a wonderful game, but it has a very slow start. Honestly, if it hadn't had the word "Zelda" in the title, I'd've returned Twilight Princess before reaching the first dungeon, but because of how great the rest of the series had been, I stuck with the game for much longer. The turning point for me, where it flipped in my head from "this really isn't very good" to "this is a good game" was the introduction of using the iron boots to walk on magnetic walls at the start of dungeon two. As I played, each new game mechanic felt better than the last, and I was loving it. As a result of this experience, I gave Skyward Sword much longer to show me something good than I really should've. The first good game mechanic to me? The timeshift stones. The second good game mechanic to me? Rearranging the rooms in a dungeon like a sliding block puzzle. Those two things were the only redeeming qualities of the game for me, and they were both barely used. There was no overworld, so there was no feeling of exploration and no secret-finding, which are usually the main draws for me of a Zelda title. Saying that it's a bad Zelda game can still mean it's quite a good game, as the comparison threshold is so much higher, as the series has such wonderful games. I would say that about Phantom Hourglass (which I have two very large gripes with, but really like the clever ways items have multiple uses). Skyward Sword though... I don't just feel like it's a bad Zelda game... I feel like it's just a bad game. Some people seem to enjoy it, so good for them. I'm glad somebody does, because enjoying things is way better than not... But it's not for me, and that includes Koloktos.

Skyward Sword always felt very rushed to me, almost like they just released the beta for the holiday rush of games. It had a lot of good ideas that just needed more simmering. It's also upsetting when an item has one use for one dungeon and you never see it ever again. I still enjoyed it enough to beat it with weeks of it coming out, but I doubt I will ever re-visit it when you have stuff like Majora's Mask with one of the densest overworlds ever or the very methodical and everything has a purpose design sense of most 2D Zeldas.

The fastest way to beat Koloktos is to use bombs in the first phase and Skyward Strikes in the second phase.

The best boss fight in Skyward Sword, easily. Yes, Demise is exciting for those reaching him for the first time, but if you can beat him 5 times in less than 10 minutes on Hero mode like I did, then what kind of final boss is he? That was done in Lanayru's Lightning Round.

The point of this being fun like child's playing is also accompanied by Koloktos laughing like a child when it dies. This video put more faith into a little theory that Koloktos has the soul of a child who was killed before the chunk of land that would be Skyloft was lifted into the sky. All of the humans down there were massacred, so it's not impossible a child died, inhabitated the body of this six armed, metal titan, and protected the cistern from the evil down below it. That's also why it may be one of the only temples that hasn't fallen into ruin or is overrun with monsters, except for a few. And the place below the cistern may just be the source of the malice, where demise was born. Seeing how there are corpses of bokoblin

reanimated by malice, and also evil crystals, there's no real explanation to this place, so I like this theory that Koloktos, the sould of a child with the huge metal warrior, protects this place from the source of evil below, until it's overwhelmed by Ghirahim, and forced to fight Link. Then it laughs like the kid it really is when you kill it, and free it. It's been suppressed the whole fight and can only laugh when you reveal what it really is

All three ghirahim are good, moldarach is fun and keeps you on your toes albeit easy. Demise is fantastic. Levias is a cool. Scaldera is unique. The imprisoned the third time is fun and blood pumping. And ofc koloktos is the best boss in the series. The the only one that is kinda bad is tentalus. I like the boss theme tho
