My grandfather was sunk by a Uboat on the Murmansk run. Was able to track the descendants of the crew down. For the last 13 years minus Covid which we did on FaceTime to maintain the tradition, we’ve raised a toast to our grandfathers. They’ve invited me to Germany next year to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our becoming friends properly. They’re among my best friends as they welcomed me openly. For our 20th we hope to have pictures of us toasting on the conning tower of U-995 or U-505 whichever will have us

@@matthewcaughey8898 iirc the uboat bunker they're departing from in the movie is la Rochelle. They are still intact, as they had trouble demolishing it. It's a cozy, small coastal town. Maybe do a trip and enjoy some fresh seafood :) Hamburg has uboat bunkers too, but they're demolished from the ones I've seen. But it also has a pretty large conventional soviet uboat for tours. Also the Marineehrendenkmal (navy memorial for nations that lost soldiers during the war) in Kiel has a ww2 uboat sitting on the beach, which you can visit for free. Really impacted me when I saw it for the first time. You can walk through the sections and take a peek at sonar and radio room. That's it for my travel guide

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars You may well have a point, but interesting fact is that most Kriegsmarine sailors, including the U-Boat arm, were NOT Nazi Party members, and actually had little time or understanding of their ideology. All Officers were Nazi party members, but then it was a requirement, not a choice. Doenitz was Hitler's chosen successor after he committed suicide, the second Fuhrer of the collapsing 3rd Reich, because Hitler felt he was the one person left at the top that he could trust, but in reality Doenitz, although a high-ranking Nazi, actually had no interest in their doctrine or their political views. Read his memoirs, his diaries and his notes, all he was interested in was stopping Britain by cutting its supply lines - whether or not he wanted payback for being on the loosing side in WW1 has never been quite agreed upon to this day.

@@xj900uk First! Member of the NSDAP is no definition for Nazi. Instead of this a Nazi was a follower and supporter of the German Nazi government. Since 1936 at the latest the overwhelming majority of Germans were follower and supporters of the German Nazi government thus they were Nazis. The same applies to the German military, including the navy, because also even there the overwhelming majority were follower and supporters of the German Nazi government thus they were Nazis. Incidentally, the claim that German sailors had no time for Nazi ideology is absurd. One didn't have to study for years to know this ideology. It was enough to hear the speeches of the German government on the radio, read the newspaper or watch the newsreels in the cinema to know what the most important theses of ideology are. In addition, the vast majority of sailors, like the Germans as a whole, had a very good understanding of this ideology. Which is not to be expected otherwise from follower and supporters of the German Nazi government.

Disgusting! This propaganda movie has nothing to do with reality! The German submarine sailors and especially the captains were heroes to the German Nazi public. They were heroes of Nazi propaganda and they were very happy to be! In this German propaganda movie the opposite is shown and these Nazi soldiers are turned in this movie into heroes who were actually opponents of the German Nazi government. Really evil, mendacious propaganda! If one look closely. One can't see a swastika under the eagles on their caps. If one wonders why. A Swastika on the cap does not suit German heroes.

@@GreatPolishWingedHussars Obviously you havent seen the movie or you wouldnt be calling it propaganda, particularly concerning how it ends. Second, swastika ? of course they got swastikas , eagles and whatever to add to reality. From what I hear those who volunteered into submarine service back then were regularly the most zealous nazis the reich could dish out. Do watch that movie, at some point the captain says it right out "the crew isnt the same anymore, now come the fanatics, the crazed followers with only the fuhrer in mind"
