6 cylinder BMW's are always the real BMW..the e36 platform was a huge step from the e30 and the 46 was an evolution of the same platform. The 5 series until the e60 was a stretch version of the 3 series platform.

At this age, it's all down to the wear and tear. Check the engine for oil consumption, cooling issues, and the suspension. Also, try to find out if the car is running on its original engine or converted from something else. Now, it's okay if it is a 320i M50 convert to a 325i M50, because those are plug and play conversions. But if it was a 318i 4-cylinder convert to 325i or 328i 6-cylinder; or auto converted to manual, gotta check more thoroughly if the conversion was meticulously done.

Ahh! Brings back memories of my Boston green e36 318is. Thought those seats look familiar, I did the same mod. I concur with thana’s comments, the 4cyl engine does make the car bit more “chuckable” so to speak. This is coming from a e87 120i vs 130i both manual. However the driving pleasure of the n52 inline 6 combined with the aural delight fulfils my definition of driving perfection. Would’ve kept my e36 and did a 6cyl conversion for if the plastics held up better. Thanks for the lovely review.

bmw e36 value is already 30k and above for the 325, 328 , and good unit can fetch 40k and above.

Buy fast before they go even higher. Longer run, the E36 may have better appreciation potential than the E30 because they don't rust as much.

having driven the waja a lot and owning an E36, the moment you turn into a corner and hit full gas on the E36 is the moment you realise it has 100% nothing in common with the waja.

shouldnt be compared. they are not the same and also targeting different types of people. besides that, the E39 is a whole generation ahead of the E36. The E46 is the 3 series in the same generation as the 5 series E39. whereas the E34 5 series is the same generation as the E36. the main advantage over the 5series, is that the 3 is more nimble and lighter. its more a "drivers car".
