I spent a month and a half in Konya in June/July 2014. Wonderful city. However, with historical sites there aren't as many, just the area around the Bazaar, Mevlana tomb, and Alaeddin. Not a bad thing, because in other ways its like a "normal" city - shops, malls, restaurants, etc.. But with eklekmek! It is also an excellent location for day-trips, such as Kappadokya, Beysehir, and Catalhoyuk. Its very modern, but also a reminder that there was an Anatolia that predated the Ottomans, with a rich ancient and medieval history on full display in Konya and the surrounding area.

I'm an American but spent a semester studying at Konya :) Its definitely different and doesn't compare to Istanbul. It does have a slower pace, and more conservative (but there are some areas of the city that aren't). Outside the Mevlana Turbe, the Bazaar and some other sites downtown, there isn't much in the way of history to see. But take side-trips to Catalhoyuk, Beysehir, and Cappadocia, and you will get that. I liked the eklekmek, too

I know that Mevlana was born in the city of balkh in the present day Afghanistan. His ethnicity is Persisn and his books are mostly in Persian but after Mongols invaded Persia he migrated to the other side of the empire which is the present day Turkey. Mevlana is really respected in Iran and his name and poems are even taught in Persian schools.

@Antromoji Most Afghans claim Rumi to be from Afghanistan due to what you just said now. At one point most of these empires crossed one another. Afghan ethnicity are Pashtoons, Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbecks. So you have a point. As for Persians, I am always confused with the idea of being a Persian. Awhile back, an Afghan said to an Iranian that he's Persian, the Iranian said "No you are not", you are Afghan. So the Afghan person was shocked. However, when there are legends like Rumi or any intellectual, the Persians claim them to be theirs even if they're Afghan or of Turk.

Rumi and his philosophy influenced my life and changed me to a better version of myself. I am a Persian, and if someone asks me about my pride, I refer them to my Grand Master Molana Jalal Al-Din Mohammad Balkhi. I am thankful to Turkiye for keeping the grave of our pride nice, clean, and amazing. ❤

Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times, Ours is the portal of hope, come as you are." Ok ok this does not belong to rumi Come Come Whatever You Are Come Again, a poem commonly attributed to Rumi but alleged to belong to Abu Said-i Ebu'l-Hayr. It is thought that it coincides with the philosophy of Celaleddin Rumi and is attributed to him because he was the most important poet of his period.

To all people saying Rumi was Persian, I do not think he really cared about ethnicity he is a man we could call a “world citizen” today. On the other hand, he lived and died in Konya. Rumi is a richness Turkey developed and protected till today. He bloomed in Turkey. It is nonsense to try to make people convince he is Persian just because he had Persian roots. Create your own richness. We protected his legacy for 8 hundred years and we will for another 8 hundred years while you add some funny youtube comments and destroying everything that gives flowers in your own country.

+bradwatson7324 I never had any trouble as an American in Turkey, and I spent a lot of time there (accumulative five months across three summers) throughout the country. It is much safer than even where I live or much of our own country. And I even went there immediately after the coup (which was blamed on the U.S.), yet people I met and talked with never treated me differently for being American. Most people know the difference between the people of a country compared to the policies of a government.
