Taemin has said often that michael jackson is one of his biggest influences in his dancing, and the media has sometimes called him the michael jackson of korea. He definitely gets inspiration from him while still keeping his own personal style at the forefront of his performances.

I wish I could find the video clip of our baby cheese (Taemin) in the army (currently serving). He and the army band were performing "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson and our baby boy was having the hardest time not dancing. At one point it looked like he was about to break for it, but pulled himself back in. He can't help but dance it's in his blood and in his heart and soul.

"Criminal" is part of Taemin's 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle. As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.” And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is the victim who is being held captive by the criminal who is the lover that he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by a lover to the point where he is suffering from stockholm syndrome and he has now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though he is being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) he can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt him, etc. As part of the story, he has been held captive for so long that he is now suffering from stockholm syndrome, so he is no longer fighting the abuse and that is why you see him throw his bindings away. The criminal (which is a metaphor for the pressure he has felt in his career) no longer has to tie him up to keep him there. (Because he has fallen in love with the pain and suffering he inflicts on himself as a artist, etc.) The backup dancers represent the forces he is struggling against as he fights with his mind over whether to stay or go, etc. Fun fact: It was Taemin's idea to include the police blotter/news clips in that part of the song. If you notice, the sound bites are from all over the world and they are speaking multiple languages. This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does. All of Taemin's dances tell a story. As he has said, he specifically designs his choreography to be a part of the story within the song and MV. So, "Criminal" is supposed to be slightly creepy, as well as sexy. He is literally being abused and asking you to please "destroy me more." As a member of SHINee, Taemin has trained his entire career to be able to pull off this type of intense and intricate dancing while singing live and always sounding flawless the whole time. That is what SHINee are known for. So not only is Taemin an amazing dancer, but he is also one of the best singers in the industry, and his group SHINee make up one of the top groups, that everyone looks up to and dreams of even coming close to being as good as. What you just witnessed was art in its purest form. If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, not only should you see his live performance, but just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away. The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite. That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular. When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he becomes the most powerful and magnificent performer that commands the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance. When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL. Because Taemin is a member of SHINee, none of his songs are ever like anything you have every heard or seen before from him. It will always have a new beat, style and sound. As SM's experimental boy group, SHINee is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend, and that includes the members' solo work. With every new song Taemin produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from him in any of his songs. So, "Criminal" won't be like "Advice" or anything else he has ever done.

I was wondering if you could point to the interview/video in which Taemin's saying that Criminal is about toxic relationship with a lover? In all the sources I have seen, he said that it is about two sides of himself and his internal struggle, never about another person being a criminal. I would be very curious to see what he said exactly, thanks!
@milindawilson9175
@milindawilson9175 2 жыл бұрын
@@shadow_sigyn It wasn't necessarily part of any specific interview. It's just one interpretation that a lot of people have had, plus it's my personal interpretation -- not a literally relationship with a lover, but his relationship with fame, which is like a toxic relationship with a lover. Just because Taemin never specifically pointed it out, doesn't mean I or anyone else is wrong. But for the sheer fact that the song talks about stockholm syndrome means it references a toxic relationship. That is what someone who is being brainwashed and dealing with stockholm syndrome is part of, a toxic relationship -- whether it's an internal one or an physical one. There are multiple layers to the story. Although you are right, Taemin has focused on the two sides of a person as how he wants to tell the story, this doesn't mean that it's the only interpretation or message being told. ;) Plus, if you are battling with the two sides of yourself, you can view that like battling with a lover when you are stuck in a toxic relationship. You know they are bad for you, but you can't help still loving them. The toxic part is that you continue to struggle to find harmony between the two sides, etc.

I would suggest going in chronological order from now on. It'll really show you his journey as an artist as he gets to have more and more input into his music. At least, I'd watch "Danger" before "Move". For many of us who grew up with SHINee, Taemin's growth makes us all act like proud moms. We saw him go from a baby in a bowl cut who left all the speaking to his members to an insane artist that will say whatever he wants when he gets a mike. You already heard some of Jonghyun and Onew's amazing vocals in Replay. They took Taemin under their wing to teach him to sing. He would practice his singing instead of sleeping way too often, but it paid off. He went from having no lines to main vocal in a couple of years. You can see some of Jonghyun's personal colour in the way that Taemin sings. He now covers a lot of Jjong's parts in SHINee songs since he can hit very high notes before flipping into falsetto.

YESSSSSS!!! I’m so glad you made time to go ahead and jump into “Criminal”!!! It’s such a beautiful showcase for his style, vocals, and dance. When you get a chance to dig deeper, I think you’ll really enjoy the lyrics. It explores the lure of things (people) we know are bad for us, and the links between pleasure and destruction. I really hope you’ll catch “Move” next! I suspect you’ll absolutely love the visuals, and especially the dance and the styling. Taemin is the definition of alluring in it, and the song has a sultry quality that makes you want to listen in the dark. 😊 BTW, I think I know what you mean when you “compare” him to Michael Jackson. There’s a certain air of fearlessness, superhuman talent, unique artistry, and almost seeming possessed by the music that both Taemin and MJ embody. It’s that feeling you get when you see something you know that no one else would/could do even half as well. Pure magic!

People now call it as "T Pop" which means "Taemin Pop" 😁... we humbly suggest if you could do 2 video per reaction (1 MV and 1 practice video) because his "dance practice video's" are so amazing,it shows more of his intricate moves especially his song "Famous" dance practice video. Another fanfact is that SHINee is the FIRST to introduce "Practice Videos" that many kpop idols do now and many fans enjoy watching. Told you they are trend setter 😁. Yay more Taemin! I liked your comments on Taemin keeping his own identity. It really resonated. I guess I'll comment a little bit more on the video if you're interested. Criminal has been said to be about themes like stockholm syndrome and being in difficult relationships. Taemin had a big hand in making this music video. He personally chose the director (Jo Beomjin, who he worked with on a couple other videos like Press Your Number and Drip Drop), and helped shape a lot of the video's direction. There's also a lot of religious imagery in the video, which is interesting. About the video, Taemin has said (trans): "You can see that it builds up to a very dramatic ending. I'm tied up, then I'm free and I dance around, but not in a joyful manner. It's very emotional, and I added an element of catharsis at the end."

you make a great point about the michael jackson influence being clear, but taemin still having his own style. sometimes people try to stick too close to their influences, and end up just coming across as a kind of cover artist instead of being their own separate thing. especially with someone like mj, whose style was so unique and immediately identifiable. mj was one of the reasons taemin decided he wanted to be a performer when he was a kid, so i think it's great to see him take that inspiration and turn it into something new. also your expression when he hits those moves is cracking me up lol. every time i see your face twist up i'm like yeah, he gets it😂

Taemin sets the dance standard for male idols. Move is must-see. There are 3 MVs for Move with different dance formats - group, duo and solo - and a dance practice vid. There's no doubt he's a special talent who is supremely gifted but there's also no doubt that Michael Jackson was an influence on his style. Kpop is heavily influenced by African American artists and I don't think it's disrespectful of an idol's artistry or uniqueness to point out those influences when you see or hear them. One of the things I love about kpop artists is that they use elements of music and dance styles from all eras and all over the world as a springboard for their own creativity and, as we see in Criminal, what they come up with can be surprising, brilliant and original, even for jaded old farts like me who think most pop music is boring and derivative. Taemin is such an iconic dance legend that you'd think he'd win every dance award he was nominated for but at the 2020 MAMA awards Hwasa's Maria was selected over Criminal for the year's best solo dance performance. Nobody, including Hwasa, would claim she's a better dancer than Taemin but given how great a dancer he is it just goes to show that the level of talent in S Korea is shockingly high for a relatively small country.

@@infinitelocke Every artist studies those who came before them and absorbs what turns them on. Kpop is fearless about treating everything from the past as leggo blocks that can be disassembled and fitted together however they want or juxtaposed side by side and I think that's a big part of what makes it unique. It's like a science experiment in recombinant DNA or grafting completely different plants to create a new species. You can often pick out pieces of the source material, like an MJ dance move or a Nile Rodgers guitar lick, but rather than being a mere imitation or a watered down version of the original, it's been transformed and re-envisioned in the context of their own unique culture, style and personal creativity, bringing new life to old ideas.

Exactly! Agree with your comments on MJ's influence while keeping his own identity. Taemin is one of my fav solo artist and is well respected in the industry. You should check his dance practice and also "Move". And after "Move" please check other idols covering it, especially Dreamcatcher SuA (who's coming for you) and Dami! Thanks!

Taemin the ace, the king of kpop, the idols idol and best dancer in kpop. Already a legend in the industry and he hasn't even reached 30 yet 👏 He is the most unique artist you will find in kpop. He is the role model of so many idols despite still being so young! I don't think you will ever be disappointed with a Taemin track! I hope your time allows you to also react to his live performances at some point because that guy is the most insane performer! Also if you are interested in his dancing I can only recommend to also react to his dance practices. They are amazing. He has one for all of his title tracks except Advice. Here I can recommend the Studio Choom performance. Like I said before Taemin is a self taught dancer (with MJ as his idol) and actually started with popping and locking. So I loved how you pointed the insane but also subtle popping out in your reaction 👏 Taemin was already such a talent at age 11 to 14 and just insane when he debuted at 14 with Shinee. He only got better and better till he debuted solo at 21 and ever since tried and mastered so many different dance styles like that man was just born to dance. I also loved how you pointed out his vocals. I love his voice and he worked so hard to be where he is now. He has become one of the best vocalists in the industry and he has one of the most versatile voices too. You can already tell from Advice and Criminal and how different he sounds. Can't wait to watch more of your Taemin and also Shinee journey ♥️ Thank you so much for your reactions!

Kang daniel is a great artist he is in a group but i do recommend you to look at him first. Daniel also has his own label. The songs i recommend Are: - Paranoia - waves ft simon dominic, jamie There are a lot of songs but i think you will like these.

The fact that Taemin was inspired by the work of MJ is not surprising. It's great when you watch Taemin dance he is compared to a legend. And how Taemin's body embodies the elements of MJ recognizable to the whole world. I scrolled into the commenta, but as far as I can see there is no mention of his older songs or his japanese tracks, which have a unique vibe... There are wonderful songs that showcase his vocals as Love, Rise, Soldier, Sexuality, Hypnosis, Heaven, Thirsty (even better live) and japanese tracks as Door, Flame of Love, Sayonara Hitori, I'm Crying, Exclusive. FoL and SH also have mesmerising MV. These are only a few, he has a huge solo production! But all of his songs are absolutely beautiful. One last thing: please react to "Just Me and You" if you want to have a full audiovisual experience of Taemin dancer and singer. His present for Shawols when he enlisted...

I just found you and I love your reactions to kpop music. I have something that will really destroy your soul. Ok so theres a group called SuperM, and basically it consists of the members you love Baekhyun being your bias from Exo and Also Kai being your demon in Exo, Lucas being your demon, Taemin, Mark and Taeyong. Baekhyun it the leader of SuperM. It’s a super group SM Took the best visuals, Rappers, Dancers, and Vocalist and put them in one group and the are called the Avengers of Kpop the music and the beat gives off Marvel movies and things of that sort. It was actually Marvels idea to put a super kpop group together and SM put them together. A song I would recommend you start your reaction off with is their debut Song Jopping, and One( Monster+Infinity) those two are one of my favorite and I really think you will love it. Fair Warning they will wreak you every which Way just so you know. I would love to see your reaction to the group since they are the ones you love. Keep up the good work love your videos.

I’m super happy with another Taemin reaction and frankly I think it’s even better you didn’t do a marathon! Taemin’s songs are so unique (and so many) they should be digested and analyzed one at a time. I expected you to like Criminal - this song (like Taemin himself) has no weaknesses. As many people told you the song that followed Criminal and so to say completed this story and concept of Never Gonna Dance Again albums was IDEA, so it would probably be good to react to IDEA next. But even if you decide to do Move or Want it doesn’t really matter that much, cause all his songs stand on their own and are a complete story on their own. As for Taemin I don’t mind the MJ reference when it’s done the way you talked about it. MJ surely was his inspiration but he never tried copying him. Rather than that Taemin took the inspiration to create his own unique style and he fully succeeded. I absolutely love his vocal tone - he has my favorite vocal tone among other artists I know and that is why he’s my favorite male artist.

Thank you so much for fitting more Taemin into your schedule. As you can see by now, he's special. I won't go into the meaning of the song since Milinda (who is great by the way) has already done so. However I do suggest you watch this live version to see just how much more impressive he is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7aRoqug27e1lI0.html This one's freaky. I had to actually watch it several times to make sure I was really seeing how he moved correctly. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7aRoqug27e1lI0.html (watch this on your own because it will get blocked otherwise.) I will give you a couple other suggestions that display Taemin's phenomenal mastery of popping, locking, and isolations: "Famous" MV (2019-Japanese): Although this is a Japanese track, MANY have reacted to it without problems. It combines all of the above with Taemin's signature fluidity. The live performance at his 2019 T1001101 concert fantastic and has been safe so far: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7Jnhstlt6unZZ8.html It is always an adventure to watch Taemin live. He usually embellishes his performances with additional details in his choreo. I don't think he necessarily plans it that way because he has said in interviews that his choreos are always changing because he dances according to how he feels at that moment. He also said he loses himself in the character he is playing on stage. For two other older videos which are heavily MJ inspired, try the performance MVs for 2016's "Press Your Number": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5-Kh66e39abdas.html and "Drip Drop": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/heBjoNBk2bavlps.html and here's a live performance of "Drip Drop" that he did as a collab with another SM artist, Seulgi: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdBzY6tpnKmRXYU.html Lastly, we have his solo debut song, "Danger". This was the transformation of cute, little fluffy maknae Taemin into the dangerous MAN Taemin...lol. When interviewed about going solo, Taemin, in his then typical shy way, said he was afraid "Danger" would break our image of him and he worried about it, but still REALLY wanted to do it. He was tired of being the cute little boy and wanted to be taken seriously: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6xooJV7rqrOe4k.html This was his live performance at one of SHINee's concerts. We all just about died with this one. Taemin most definitely obliterated any remnants of being a shy kid after this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l7R-gJeXzZ3Jm3U.html
