I think that plays a huge role to why she is acting more docile than German women usually do in a more comfortable situation

@@loen2629 it's not really about her being shy. She is clearly using body language/tonality etc that German culture and speech does not utilise. I have seen many many Western girls that have come to Korea start adopting these mannerisms, and i am not criticising or trying to call her out AT ALL, because as i said she seems lovely. I'm simply pointing out that this is not representative of German "speaking culture". It's hard to explain, but i guess other Germans know what i mean. (And if you are German then i would love to hear where exactly you are from because I'm curious if this is a more regional thing.) Anyway i dont want this to become a comment spreading negativity, i just wanted to point it out 😶

@@13892 I actually am German too 🙈 I'm from southern Germany, Baden-Württemberg. I do get what you are saying, but to me it didn't seem like the way she speaks is something she adapted (it could be, but it didn't look like that to me). She simply looked like she isn't the most outgoing girl, and on top of that the cameras made her awkward and giggly. I don't really think it's a regional thing in Germany, it just depends on personality. I know quite a few girls who coul react in the same manner if they were in a situation like her 😅 you know, those girls who are usually quiet/introverted and very soft spoken and friendly. I mean, we may all be Germans but we also don't all have the same personality

No.. Lowkey I am from Germany (you probably are as well though._.) and everytime me or my friends meet new people we act the same. Speaking really quiet and soft, covering your mouth while laughing and just smiling the whole time so that everyone feels comfortable. I think it just depends where and how your grow up and not really from which country you are from.

nah. She´s just shy. I know a lot of german girls who are like this around strangers. Especially if there is a camera filming you and many people will watch you, you just act way more shy and awkward than you would usually in a normal setting

Well I can tell you that I 100% speak like that because where I am from we had a major issue with our elementary schools.. They kinda screw up with raising us how to speak properly and now 10 years later I still can't raise my voice or speak loud enough so people can hear me from 10 meters away.. Paris was the worst for me too. Terribly rude and tried to rip me off two different times because I didn’t speak French... It’s unfortunate because I’m sure there’s lovely people living in Paris, but the ones dealing with tourists are giving them a bad name.

@@peeandvinegar I don‘t think these people were an exception. I am german and did an exchange with a french girl (was there for a week). Everyone seemed uninterested and the only person who really talked to me was her mother. I cried several times. And the worst thing: French people DON‘T want to learn foreign languages. In France we spoke french the whole time and at my place as well, even though we both have been learning french and german for two years.

@@peeandvinegar I still had a great time in Paris. It was beautiful, and the food was good. They were just the least nice of all the places I went.

I think that the two did not know each other before, and she was just shy. Also, she was not speaking her native language. Even though she sounds pretty fluent she is probably still nervous about speaking Korean. When I was on an exchange in France, I spoke quietly too, as if I was mumbling. 😅 So yeah she probably talks so quietly and in a high-pitched voice because she is shy and nervous.

Ngl it took me a second and the subs to understand she was talking german.. before I had to replay it and actually trying to listen better

People in Germany tend to think racism is a thing of the past and they deny it’s a problem in today’s Germany as well because they themselves never really experience it. And you are 100% spot on with many people reducing you to your ethnicity no matter what you achieved. You could introduce a black person with a PhD who is a Uni prof to someone and still people will at least secretly if not openly feel superior. They’ll think stuff like ‘well who knows where this person got their title from and how the standards there are’. Or take my husband as an example. He’s Indian, earns more than I could ever hope to earn in my life, has two college degrees (one from India, one from UK) and in Germany you can just tell many people don’t really believe he’s that successful, it’s like “well how successful can some India possibly be?” And many actually crack jokes in front of me relating to Raj of Big Bang Theory or that Ranjeet character by Kaya Yanar (don’t know if you know him) and expect me to find it a fun comparison to my husband. They don’t even get how racist it is and it drives me so mad that with my husband being such an all over interesting person who has achieved so much, is invested in social causes and interested in so many things, that’s what they boil his identity down to... to my face! And they don’t even see the problem. If you tell them outright they’ll go “oh you know we don’t mean it like that! You know it’s all in good fun!” Well how would you like it if he cracked nazi jokes to your face all day? All in good fun right? All Indians are like your racist TV portrayals and all’s Germans are like Hollywood movie nazis right? So funny!!! Not! It’s a reason why we made the choice very early to never stay in Germany. Every country has racists, sure, but in countries with strong migration history like US or Uk at least there are more people who are used to people who look different than them and who will approach both him and me as human beings and not as whatever their idea of a stereotype is. As for Germany we’re not up for that everyday kind of frustrating alienation in our lives. The thing about never truly being considered native will be the same in Korea. Actually it’s the same anywhere where people are still used to being more or less homogenous and have a lesser percentage of non-natives in the country. You always remain ‘foreigner’ if you look different even if you were born and grew up there. Heard the same about Japan. Even I have to say in India it’s the same too. I’ve lived in India for the last 7 years, i speak our local language, still many people approach me like I’m a tourist fresh off the boat. That will never change. The only difference here is that I actually enjoy more white privilege here than I ever did in my life because there is still a lot of internalized colonialism going on here and people right away think I’m rich and treat me extra attentively. Many white people who visit India get the most disgusting ego boost through that fact. I find it uncomfortable cause I know why it’s happening. At least after getting to know me people treat me normally, and even otherwise why would I complain as compared to what my husband has to deal with in my home country? I have never been to Korea, so I wouldn’t really know, but the thing that makes the everyday racism which many Germans deny is even racism so annoying is that even if someone is trying to be nice you can still feel they don’t quite see a non-white person as a person first but rather as their ethnicity first. And there is always that slight or very open condescending attitude that swings along with it. People are shocked and baffled when we say ‚No, we could never imagine living in Germany.‘ they actually cannot believe it. How would you chose India over Germany? Well we get to be two people in India. In Germany we only get to be me and „her Raj from Big Bang theory“. We‘re just not up for that. And it doesn’t help there are many nice people of course too. For how comfortable you feel in a country it matters a lot how your day to day interactions with random people every day go down. And it just grinds you down if you feel regularly that people automatically perceive themselves superior to you.
