A video tour of some of the oddities of Home Plus, a Korean supermarket. If you're planning on living in Korea, this is what some supermarkets might look like

When you're sick and having a trip down youtube memory lane. This was the very first EYK video I ever watched way way way way WAY back in the day. Fun, cute, quirky, living in another country fun, exploring the culture. I would have never thought this channel would grow so huge. Way to go guys, thanks for helping me Build My Ladder and stay positive even when I feel like shit.

Had an enormous amount of down time at work tonight and ended up going back to the very beginning and watching all of the videos I had not yet watched... along with some old favorites that I have watched MANY times over. Hard to believe how far things have come, even in the last 6 years that I've been watching!

I love the way the format has changed over the years. I think most of us who have followed the channel for a while have kind of adapted with you guys as you have changed things. It's fun to look back at the different styles of videos you've done! :)

I have never commented before.. but I came across this video in 2008 when I was learning about countries in Asia that have online Tesco shopping at subway stations. Needless to say I was hooked ever since and have seen every single video.. 🤓 I know Martina's love for Japan began when she was a child .. Happy they are there now :) but It's fun to watch old ones still! It makes me wish I documented parts of my life to reflect on how much has grown!!! :)

This Homeplus is in Bucheon City near the Sopooong Mall/bus terminal. The entire alcohol section is big; all types of rum, vodka, soju, traditional korean drink, a wine section (plus wine fridge), and lots of beer. Off the top of my head, I can remember seeing: moosehead, asahi, sappora, a beer with a panda on it. I think it's a Chinese beer.

Some one gave you advice that was true (and still is true for small towns) five to seven years ago. Gotta luv the serbeuseu! [a Konglish use of service] Oh, how I love to shop and snack at Homeplus, Lottemart, or E-mart. They give you their sales-pitch (which I mostly don't understand) you get the sample; dumpling, fried pork, tofu with chopped onions and soy sauce. then just smile and say thanks. it's awesome.

I really do agree that they don't have numbers on pillar. that would be very good way to give directions to consumers, but for daily consumers.. they just know the exit, which is kinda near the entrance.

I am Malaysian but hover around Singapore/Malaysia a lot and tend to find supermarkets/department stores open during public holidays and til late at night. When I came to study in UK, I got such a culture shock because places close here around 5-6pm and NOTHING gets done during the weekends or public holidays. My expectations of service has been drastically lowered.

@JosKiddin japanese and korean are syllabaries. chinese is symbol oriented and is competely different than the japanee and korean writing system. for japanese except for 2 letters every letter is a syllabary with consonant+vowel, but korean has individual letter for all vowels and consonants

Homeplus keeps me sane, which is scary when I see the Special K with socks attached, or when I do a happy dance over finding something new... hmm I think maybe I do need to venture over to the new store, because I'm thinking my nearby location is looking pretty pathetic. And I'm mad that they gave up on Jif after a month and haven't had the wholewheat pasta lately.

Yep, just go to Seoul for your Western fix. Out in the country, it's basics like water, potatoes, rice, tissue, etc. Real coffee can be tricky outside major cities as I don't like the instant coffee. Gmarket was my favorite most useful shopping while in the countryside where you don't have modern facilities. That store is very large. The big city is where the action, eating, culture, arts, and shopping is to be had. I'd advise you to go teach in the city if single. My mistake to go rural.

Yea, Homeplus does carry much more selection than Emart at better prices and extra service; those little packs taped on. I was in Changwon my 1st year and found Homeplus to beat the pants off of Emart. The problem is during my 2nd assignment to Korea is none of this shopping is to be found in Gangwon-do like in all the other provinces. Where is this Homeplus? How the import beer selection in that Homeplus?
