I am a Trinidadian, the rice dish looks like what we call "pelau" as to your curiosity it is indeed made like a stew with soy sauce or browning (burnt sugar sauce) and the roti is made of dahl (split peas) grains it's called dahlpouri, the 2 fry bread dishes (doubles) are usually served with alot more sauce and is usually served with channa, sweet sauce, shadonbenny, cucumber, chutney and pepper. Alot of topping to choose from 😁

I live near a Trinidadian restaurant and their food is SO BOMB! Im obsessed with their doubles🤤 I agree with one of the comments saying that usually doubles are more filled and saucy. The sour thing you’re tasting is most likely tamarind sauce. I always ask for extra on the side. At my local spot they have this sauce called “peppa sauce” its so good. If ever you go back you should ask for some. Its super spicy tho😂 love from montreal

Guys! I am an Asian Trini! My paternal grandparents were Chinese & Korean. My maternal fore parents were every other ethnicity we have in Trinidad & Tobago. I love that you tried our food! The 'wrap' is the roti. And the different tasting curry, is a West Indian or Caribbean blend of curry. Trinidad & Tobago nationals developed the doubles (bara & channa or chickpeas, chutney) & the roti & curry from their Indian heritage. The sour taste in the doubles is most likely a chutney & they probably pickled the cucumbers. We have it with different fruit chutney. We don't normally curry the channa/chickpeas in the doubles, but I don't know how the place you bought it from prepared it. We usually eat doubles as a breakfast dish. And you can get different meats with the roti, beef, duck, goat, liver, or even vegetarian options. The rice and peas, is our version of rice & peas. The peas you got are called Pigeon or Gungo Peas. It is a thing to say that you are giving up everything to go and plant peas in Tobago, when you are fed up with life. This is a dish from what we call our Creole dishes, which comes from our African ancestors. And we do use soy sauce in our cooking, so it is quite possible that there was soy sauce in the oxtail. The oxtail you had could have been barbecued, I say so because you described the taste as smoky. We usually eat the rice and peas with other stewed (braised) or baked/barbecued meats like chicken, fish, beef or pork. You can also find dishes with Original People (Amerindian), European, Chinese & Middle Eastern origins in our cuisine because we are a whole melting pot of ethnicities. The Chubby is made by SM Jaleel, it is a drink developed for kids, it is small to fit in their lunch kits/bags for school, but everyone drinks it. There are many flavors like cream soda, kola champagne, orange, even birthday cake. Peardrax is another popular drink originally made by a UK company, it is now made & distributed by Pepsi-Co Trinidad. Historical fact: we were a British colony for many years. Try more of our cuisine & our snacks!

Trini food is amazing! They have a fantastic street food scene. I was there in 2017 and in 2018 hosted by Reshmi and her family from Taste of Trini channel. 😋👍 Shared.
