Yes, indeed, the Koreans see things the bemused and condescending Israeli reporters don't. That is the genius of the Far East- to discern a precious commodity and minutely analyze it in an attempt to replicate it.

1:46 - 1:50 pretty much sums up everything I want to say about this 3 minute KZfaq video. And its the answer which has me upset, not the question.

@harrietcow (a) Another important point is that the Noble prices, Music, Chess e.t.c. all belong to the external layer, something that can be understood, appreciated and respected by the external viewer. The most valuable parts are hidden from the outsider by languages, traditions, way of life. The real wisdom is inside. It can not be seen or appreciated by others. (b) The Korean guy wants to find the root, which is the mount Sinai and Torah. Are they ready convert? :)

I am a jew who was raised secular, and became religious after college. I went to public schools, and went to college for four years. At this point in my life I have learned a lot of Talmud, and I will agree that Talmud and torah study sharpens the intellect like no other study. It is really a gift for a jewish person to have the treasure of torah. This is the real jewish, not the Zionist liberal jews.

No it isn't the talmud, but it shows glimpse of values and education Jews bestow on their kids. South Korea is one of the greatest example of modern miracle going from poverty stricken country in 1960's with one of the lowest GDP to world's 10th economic and 7th military power with hightech engine. It's because Confucian value and regards for high learning is ingrained in them. Koreans see a success of a country, culture and people linked to culture of how youth is raised. It's not breeding

guy says to rabbi, teach me the secret of talmud. rabbi says, 2 guys climb down a chimney into a house. #1 gets his face completely dirty; #2's face clean. who cleans his face? guy says #1 (dirty face). rabbi, "no, the 1 with the dirty face sees #2's clean face and assumes his face is clean; #2 sees #1's dirty face and assumes his face is dirty, so #2 washes his face. guy says he gets it. rabbi says no. a talmud scholar should ask how do 2 guys climb down a chimney and only 1 gets his face dirty

@jtt8355 because the first guy cleaned off the chimney before the second guy went down. the real question is hoe did 2 guys fit down the chimney...

Some of the comments here show that Ben Gurion's hatred of the Torah is alive and festering. Too bad they don't teach Bialik in Israeli schools anymore. Anyone that read Hamatmid would have at least a little respect for that which kept our people alive and intellectually vigorous for two thousand years and counting. There is a god besides Bill Gates, and Madonna is not His mother.

They probably asked a Jewish friend where to go, and the guy thought "hmmm, I don't think we want them to become as smart as we are, so let's send them to a Haredi yeshive, that can't do any harm..."

It does spell danger but study Korean history. Koreans have faced near extinction through wars and economic collapse many times. Knocked down and only to rise again. Core strength of Korean people and culture comes from a long history of overcoming hardships and impossible odds. The suicide rate and low birthrate is a common problem faced by all developed countries due to rising cost and competition. Korea is not unique in this.

This is stupid of Korean broadcast. They are looking at the wrong place. The Genius of Jews isn't in strict Yeshiva tradition which is a lot like Confucian tradition of putting priority on education and focused on their endeavors. But it also teaches them to be closed minded as you're not allowed to question outside the box. All the jewish nobel geniuses were not from Israel and they were secular Jews who were able to think out of box.

What a sweeping generalization and assumptions that Korean producer is making. It's like licking the surface of water melon and assume to know its taste. What a laugh.

+Hiram Buffenhopfer do enlighten. Yeshiva is a place of religious study for Orthodox Jews. How many Nobel winners, scientists and award winning novelist come out of Orthodox Jews? Almost all of them were Ashkenazi's and liberal ones.

+Hiram Buffenhopfer Koreans read Talmud more than Jews today. And the whole Jewish value on education is nothing new also. Many other religion and cultures has that in common like Confucian culture. What made Jews so distinguished in 21st centuries is due to their values plus unique historical and cultural background as a diaspora and taking on multitude of cultural backgrounds - Namely Ashkenazi's. Arabs, once upon a time 900-1100 when Arab world was more open and accepting was the centre of knowledge. Had they continued, they'd won most of Nobel prizes out there. Anyway back to point, they are looking at wrong place for the secret of Jews success.

***** Give me a list or proof of Orthodoxed jews from Yeshiva who became Nobel Laureate. Fields Award Winners. Great artist or musicians. Especially compared to non orthodox jews or non-practicing one at that. It's a scientific data comparison isn't it? Let's say you're right. Jewish upbringing has a special something that makes you excel whether you are orthodox or not. If that's the case, Orthodox jews, Mizrahi jews, Sephardic jews etc... should be equally distinguished as Ashkenazis. Stats show otherwise. And same phenomenon exist in other cultures too. Yes I agree with you, Jewish teachings and its emphasis in studying and better man of oneself is amongst the strongest of other cultures. It's an important ingredient but you need more than that is my point.

Joe Boo Talmud today is read and studied more by Koreans than jews according to stats. Confucian philosophy deeply embedded in many Asian culture's psych are just as passionate on education and learning as that of jews if not more. And let's not forget where the centre of knowledge was during 900~1200AD. It was Bagdad. Muslim world was the most prolific in pursuit of knowledge than anyone else during that time. Had they not become so religiously repressed, majority of Nobel prizes would've been won by muslims than Christians and Jews and Athiest combined.
