North Korea uses McCune-Reischauer romanization while South Korea uses Revised Romanization. South Korea once used McCune-Reischauer until 2002. The advantages of McCune-Reischauer is the pronounciation and the disavantages of it is the same one Roman letter of two characters. Example ㅂ and ㅍ shares the same romanization of P and then ㅓ and ㅗ shares the romanization of O. So, the NK romanization might be confusing especially without breves and apostrophes such as P' and ŏŭ. Revised Romanization on the other hand, gives an advantage based on the characters such as ㅂ written as B while ㅍ written as P which in MC uses both letters P as well as ㅗ written as O while ㅓ written as EO which in MC uses the same letter except the second one is ŏ. However, the disadvantages is the pronounciation because the B pronounced as P in the beggining as well as D pronounced as T. So, it depends on you if which of those two romanization systems are you comfortable with.

Northern Korean: 지 sounds more like jji or zzi 소 sounds more like ssuh or sso Compared to South Korean: 지 sounds more like ji 소 sounds more like so North Koreans accent has “stronger” emphasis or tone to some words. When you compare word by word it is very similar but when the whole sentence is spoken there is a difference in length of words spoken and flow overall.

The verbal intonation and pronounciation in SK been quickly flattend and casualized especially in 1990s while those in NK getting even stronger based on communist language guidelines. If you can get an access to oldie broadcast archives of both Koreans(there are plenty of SK archives uploaded by SK government), you can tell only very little difference between south and north because commie Korean broadcast was made in mid-20 century's Seoul formal accent for years, until they develop so called 'Communist language life'.

If you watch interviews with North Korean defectors (a good one by Asian Boss), they all say they have trouble understanding the South Korean dialect due to the isolation. Very common for them to go to school and have no clue what the loan word means. This is a very well known case with many North Korean Defectors.

I know nothing about asian languages, but I hear that north korean dialect is more tonal, with long and short vowels and other such things, while south korean sounds somehow simplified. I think they should understand each other except some new words based on today popcultre and technology which they don't have on north. Difference sounds like difference between my language (Czech) and some eastern dialects from near polish border, we can understand it, but sometimes you don't get some word and they don't use long vowels or they use them totaly wrong. 😀

@@kwa4209 Thank you so much for the explanation! I had the crazy idea it meant "bread" because there is a similar Russian word "pirog" which normally means "a cake" which is related to "bread". So I thought that North Korean might have experienced Russian influence (as is mentioned in some comments here) and used certain words from other languages, especially since Lord's Prayer, and Christianity in general, is an imported thing in Korea. But I was wrong apparently since this is a basic word with the meaning "be needed".

the pronunciation differences in the words themselves are not difficult for South Koreans to pronounce cuz its just a purer version of south korean Korean, if anything, its only the tone that needs to be adjusted, because North Koreans are obviously more accustomed to speaking in harsher, stricter, firmer, no-nonsense tones than South Koreans are, thus maybe the North Korean was simply spoken by a South Korean but in a deeper voice. also, its not impossible she somehow found an audio recording from North Korea. there are videos out there about north korean churches, and yes, religion is allowed in north korea, but its just extremely regulated by the government.
